The Revived Tolkien Trivia

Marky, Marky....

Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die,
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.

Bah! I thought to make a real easy one so people would search harder because it's too obvious...

Well, ting-a-ting. Bah!

Heh...double-bluff fails again....:D

Okay, then...

How many of the Ringwraiths were originally "great lords of (the) Númenórean race"?

Yet Sauron was ever guileful, and it is said that among those whom he ensnared with the Nine Rings three were great lords of Númenórean race.
The Silmarillion, Akallabeth.

Yet another hollow device made of metal that makes a ringing sound when struck, Marky...:D

Well, assuming you really mean Ladros...

...and the country of Ladros was given to Boromir, son of Boron, who was the grandson of Béor the Old.

Silmarillion - Qenta Silmarillion - 17: Of the Coming of Men into the West.

It's been almost a week, so does anybody mind if I jump in?

Who was to consider well, but not too long?

You're right, oh Green One. Sorry for the delay, I've been in Cambridge for a week...

No problem, Marky.

The answer to Clansman is Dáin II Ironfoot.

A messenger from Mordor has come to the Iron Hills offering friendship and asking for information about hobbits.
Dáin is, rightly, suspicious...
'...but Dáin said: 'I say neither yea nor nay. I must consider this message and what it means under its fair cloak.'

'Consider well, but not too long,' said he.

'The time of my thought is my own to spend,' answered Dáin.

'For the present,' said he, and rode into the darkness.'

So....
Who owned a black horn, and a red shield?

His shield was red. As he came to the valley's brink, he set to his lips a great black horn and blew a ringing blast.

'Erkenbrand!' the Riders shouted. 'Erkenbrand!'
The Two Towers - Helm's Deep.

Bilbo.

Rory Brandybuck, to his daughter-in-law Esmeralda, at the Long-Expected Party, just after Bilbo has disappeared:
‘There’s something fishy in this, my dear! I believe that mad Baggins is off again. Silly old fool. But why worry? He hasn’t taken the vittles with him.’ He called loudly to Frodo to send the wine round again.

When you consider how many questions have been posed in these threads, I'm amazed we've not run out....

Try this...
Where would you find Numinor?

(Not considered a serious answer, especially since it's in a book from the wrong Inkling, much less not on the authorized book list, but included for fun anyway)

In That Hideous Strength, the Chapter Entitled "They've Pulled Deep Heaven Down on Their Heads", p. 272 (MacMillan paperback, twenty-first printing, 1978, also known as "My Copy"!)

"Tell me, slave, what is Numinor?"
"The True West", said Ransom.

Suggested as one of Tolkien's letters, but my book is on loan at the moment...

We can find it in one of Tolkien's footnotes in Letter Number 131 To Milton Waldman:

The Men of the Three Houses were rewarded for their valour and faithful alliance, by being allowed to dwell 'western-most of all mortals', in the great 'Atlantis' isle of Númenóre.*

* A name that Lewis derives from me and cannot be restrained from using, and mis-spelling as Numinor.
Though I'm perfectly fine with the Grim person having a go in order to do something about the grimness :D

Yes, I agree, Marky...his idea about the Letters was correct.

It's also in the main body of Letter 169, to Hugh Brogan:

Your discovery of "Numinor" in C.S.L.'s That Hideous Strength is discovery of a plagiarism: well, not that, since he used the word, taken from my tales of the First and Second Ages, in the belief that they would soon appear.....The spelling Numinor is due to his hearing it and not seeing it.
Go for it, O Grim One....:D

Thank you, gentlemen. The Brogan letter was the one I had in mind, but lack of the book is the harbinger of taunting from Py and Marky in this game! (Good find on the Waldman letter, Marky...forgot all about that one.)

Right then. I'm thinking one more word might be necessary, but here goes nothing....

Into what did pride fail to timely fall?
