The Revived Tolkien Trivia

Relax, Grim. Ontario and Maryland are in the same time zone (EDT, right now). I guess that means we have the same Lane as well.

Hmmm. A question. "What is in my pock --" no, that's been done.

Restricting to the big three (Silmarillion, Hobbit, and LoTR) where are the willows found. All references are necessary.

I know, it's probably way to easy, but I am pressed for time. Can't do very much Chronning today!

Lord of the Rings:
'Can't go another step without rest. Must have nap. It's cool under the willows. Less flies!'
The Old Forest

The Silmarillion:
And the River Narog rose in the falls of Ivrin in the southern face of Dor-lómin, and flowed some eighty leagues ere he joined Sirion in Nan-tathren, the Land of Willows.
Of Beleriand and its Realms

The Hobbit:
Wind got up, and willows along its banks bent and sighed.
Roast Mutton

See, I knew it was too easy. I have always wanted to go to Nan-tathren.

The bell is a-ringin', Marky.

Do you have any new questions yet?

I understand The Book of Lost Tales I is now in, but what about Unfinished Tales? There are some real gems in there.

Will go along with what others want, but personally think maybe we should cover some of Lost Tales and some more of Children of Hurin before making more additions...?

Speaking of which, if we're doing Lost Tales, would guess we need to impose on Cul or JD to edit the first post again....

We leave Lost Tales out just know, methinks. We have quite a bit to cover in Children of Húrin I'd say.

Anyway, your question wasn't too easy, I guess. I was lucky to just have read The Hobbit passage, Land of Willows is basic knowledge in my head, and LOTR reference is easy searchable with the index...

Here's my question:

Who "runs hazard" at other people's cost?

Was pretty sure of that w/o this additional hint, but the hint iced it for me.....

The answer is Forweg, leader of the outlaws Túrin joins when fleeing what he supposes is Thingol's wrath for Saeros' death.

When Túrin came back to the camp of the outlaws he found them restless and ill at ease; for they had stayed too long already in one place, near to homesteads well-guarded, and they murmured against Forweg. 'He runs hazards to our cost', they said; 'and others may have to pay for his pleasures.'

Ah, the ringing of the bells....

*An anthem from AC/DC weirdly comes to mind*

No, no, none of that. The Now Playing thread is elsewhere.

Frodo received gifts from 3 queens. Name them and provide the quotes.

'And you Ring-bearer,' she said, turning to Frodo. 'I come to you last who are not last in my thoughts. For you have I prepared this.' She held up a small crystal phial : it glittered as she moved it, and rays of while light sprang from her hand.

...and so certain 'mortals', who have played some great part in Elvish affairs, may pass with the Elves to Elvenhome. Thus Frodo (by the express gift of Arwen)...
Life in the Undying Lands from Queen Arwen - Letter 154: To Naomi Mitchinson.

I'm a bit uncertain about the third one... so I guess there must be something going on, and I'm going to be creative...

'I am wound with knife, sting and tooth, and a long burden.' (Frodo tells Gandalf).
LOTR - Homeward Bound.

He's been up the Stairs once or twice since then, but we've left him alone: seems to have some understanding with her Ladyship. (said Shagrat refering to Shelob.
LOTR - The Choices of Master Samwise.

So, the third gift is a sting by the Ladyship Shelob.

It's the best I can do! I know the last one is weak, but I can't see a third queen Frodo met...

You've got 2 of the 3, Marky, although for Arwen I confess I was thinking of The Return of the King, Book 6, Chapter 6 Many Partings:

But the Queen Arwen said: 'A gift I will give you. For I am the daughter of Elrond. I shall not go with him now when he departs to the Havens; for mine is the choice of Luthién, and as she so I have chosen, both the sweet and the bitter. But in my stead you shall go, Ring-bearer, when the time comes, and if you then desire it.

Regarding the 3rd queen.....sometimes you have to just take things at face value.....;)

Is the third one Varda, Grim - from whom comes the starlight caught in the Phial of Galadriel?

Hmmm, I admit I hadn't thought of the indirect aspect of a gift, Py....

If I may, you're reaching too high, as it were....

Hmm...for Arwen, I was thinking of her gift of the jewel on the chain..

And she took a white gem like a star that lay upon her breast hanging on a silver chain, and she set the chain about Frodo's neck.

RotK - Book VI - Chapter 6 - Many Partings

But it's definitely three queens...?

I at first thought to number the gifts, too, but then you get into some tenous territory of what constitutes a "gift". I will accept either the gem or the passage to the West from Arwen.

And yes, there is definitely one more queen, though perhaps with different peerage.....

I can't even think of more women Frodo met...

Some Hobbits, but they don't have queens...
Goldberry, she's not a queen (and anyway, I can't think of a gift she gave)...
Eowyn in Gondor, but she's not a queen either (and only gift she gave was to Merry, surely)...
I can't think of more females (considering Shelob has been named by me, and Varda (or Elbereth) named by Pyan)!

Take it literally right off the page, Marky sir, and you can't go wrong....as another hint, this final queen's gift didn't last long....

I have been thinking about this since yesterday, and for the life of me I cannot think of another peerage, or another kind of queen.

The gift must have been food, as he is a Hobbit, if it isn't lasting long. Lembas? But then I am back to Galadriel.

I'm stumped as to the third queen.

Gottit!!

Mushrooms!

'They're mine!' said Frodo. 'Given to me by Mrs. Maggot, a queen among farmer's wives'
