The Revived Tolkien Trivia

To the ancient one goes the 3rd queen. That is indeed the quote I had in mind, Py, although Clanny certainly deserves an assist, getting 75% of the way there with the food comment.

Now, the answer was a true community effort this time, which I think is great, but which poses a dilemma of sorts; how to distribute portions of the bell (and the next challenge)! :p

*Grim procures laser and begins sectioning a mushroom-shaped bell*

Suggestions? :D

Well, count me out...if you give Clansman 75% of 33%, and Marky gets 66% for the original answer, that makes my total contribution about 8.25% of the answer...:D

Ah, but you haven't correctly weighted the portions. Your quote was easily the hardest of the 3 to remember/uncover as it had the least significance to any of the plots/sub-plots in the story.

Here is my thinking, submitted to the founders for their ruling:
  • As my buddy Clansman didn't have the quote or the queen (but had the path to both), by the rules of the game, I cannot give it to him.
  • Marky submitted 2 of the 3 queens, with acceptable quotes. Pyan submitted 2 of the 3 queens, but one of them (Arwen) after Marky, again with acceptable quotes.
  • Pyan had arguably the hardest quote to find, but had help.
If Marky has a question, humbly submit that the bell goes to him, having covered the majority of the challenge soonest. Otherwise, Py, the mushroom-shaped bell is yours....

(technically, no one person as yet has submitted all 3 queens with acceptable quotes, but I've a feeling I'd be strung up, tarred and feathered if I objected on these grounds!!!)

Just because I'm around, I'll pose a question... Give me all the locations Gandalf was taken to by the Eagles.

The mushroom-shaped bell (with a few incisions:D) is yours, then.

1. The Eyrie/Great Shelf

There he found all the others sitting with their backs to the mountain wall. The Lord of the Eagles also was there and was speaking to Gandalf.

The Hobbit, Chapter 6, Out of the Frying Pan, Into the Fire

2. The Carrock

Quickly now to the top of this rock the eagles swooped one by one and set down their passengers.

The Hobbit, Chapter 7, Queer Lodgings

3. Edoras

'"Then I will bear you to Edoras, where the Lord of Rohan sits in his halls,' he (Gwaihir the Windlord) said; 'for that is not very far off."

The Fellowship of the Ring, Book 2, Chapter 2, The Council of Elrond

4. Lothlórien

'"Do not let me fall!" I gasped, for I felt life in me again. "Bear me to Lothlórien

The Two Towers, Book 3 Chapter 5, The White Rider

5. Mount Doom

And they passed over Udûn and Gorgoroth and saw all the land in ruin and tumult beneath them, and before them Mount Doom blazing, pouring out its fire.

The Return of the King, Book 6, Chapter 4, The Field of Cormallen

6. Ithilien (presumed)

Side by side they lay; and down swept Gwaihir, and down came Landroval and Meneldor the Swift; and in a dream, not knowing what fate had befallen them, the wanderers were lifted up and borne far away out of the darkness and the fire.

The Return of the King, Book 6, Chapter 4, The Field of Cormallen

Hopefully, I've not forgotten some obscure reference in Letters

All right, then, a single quote challenge, if you will.

Where does a Plough swing?

Please do, Cece, and happy to have you. (Good evening, by the way!)

By the rules (see first page of the thread), however, I'm obliged to have a quote, with book and chapter cited. (I sound like one of my old business law professors!)

I hoped you'd forget about The Hobbit... Go, go, go again.

No chance for that for either Grimey or myself. Remember, we're reading it to our kids right now.

It is more fun than I ever imagined, especially for my 7-year old.

The thing is, I played this online Tolkien quiz with this kind of question, and it didn't say anything about the Eagles in The Hobbit, so I just tried it...

Silmarillion, Quenta Silmarillion, Chapter 3, Of the Coming of the Elves....

"And high in the north as a challenge to Melkor she (Varda) set the crown of seven mighty stars to swing, Valacirca, the Sickle of the Valar and sign of doom"

oh and guys I can't code. no fancy italics or bold, colored print...sorry.

When you say you can't code, Cel - don't you get the options above the reply box when you click Post Reply?
Just right click and highlight the text you want to emphasis, and choose an option...

Well, if you're gonna choose that quote, I'm afraid you'll have to provide one more quote (or at least a certain reference :D), to back it up, Cece. It was a slightly larger farming implement I'm asking about, after all. You're on the right track, though....

the browser i'm using won't let that work. tried it on this and other forums. it's a drawback to not getting a real computer I must say but what i've got is better than nothing.

ps. the only thing that works is the button for quoting other posts.

ok gimme a bit...if I can't get it the next 30 minutes i'll say pass and try for the next question

I think you're safe there, unless Py decides to be a spoiler (he is up rather late :D). Clanny and Marky are typically creatures of the daytime (which it's decidedly not for either of them right now, although Clanny's in our time zone).....I might also note that the Valar, clever as they were, might not be the most likely choice to use a Plough....

P.S. What are you using for these posts?

pyan sent it to me ten seconds after i found it

chapter ten in the fellowship of the ring on the very last page of the chapter there is a footnote that says:

" *The Hobbit's name for the Plough or the Great Bear"

it relates to this sentence:

"The Sickle was swinging bright above the shoulders of Bree-hill."

couple that with my other quote and I think that does it.
