The Revived Tolkien Trivia

Very good, Marky. I think Arien will forgive you for calling her "the Eärendel" in the first quote!:D

*A bell with a winged dragon etching on one side tumbles into Marky's hand. Flipping it over, he sees the inscription "Your turn!"*

It appears I forgot "sun" in that quote! Do I get a bonus bell for The Green Dragon, by the way?

And I'm pretty sure you guys, say "no," but can we include History already? We shouldn't pull them in too late, because then everyone knows it's from history, yeah? Personally, I'm struggling a bit with the questions. Making them up AND answering some as well, because people really start digging deep and deeper to get a good question. That on its self is part of the game and its fun, I know, but... well... what do you people think?

For the question:

Frodo was given 'grace' a few times. Show me one of those instances.

Have to admit that I enjoyed the inclusion of the Green Dragon, Marky.

Accordingly:

*The etched dragon on the side of the first bell comes to life. Making a strafing run over Marky's head, it banks abrubtly upwards, stops, spits a fireball into Marky's palm that resolves into a dragon egg, then returns to the bell and resumes its position. The egg cools in Marky's palm as a, well, egg!*

Guess we'll have to see whether the egg becomes a bell, or you now have to participate in the Tri-Wizard tournament!:D

I've posted a poll in a new thread...:p

Okay, Pyan. So not to stall and to make things clearer, I repeat the question:

Frodo was given 'grace' a few times. Show me one of those instances.

Is this one? Arwen allows him to go to Valinor in her place:

But in my stead you shall go, Ring-bearer, when the time comes, and if you then desire it. If your hurts grieve you still and the memory of your burden is heavy, then you may pass into the West ...

LotR, Book 6, ch6: "Many Partings"

I'm not sure if this is what you're after, Marky. but:

† No account is here taken of "grace" or the enhancement of our powers as instruments of Providence. Frodo was given "grace": first to answer the call (at the end of the Council) after long resisting a complete surrender; and later in his resistance to the temptation of the Ring (at times when to claim and so reveal it would have been fatal), and in his endurance of fear and suffering.

Letters - Footnote to Letter 245: to Rhona Beare.

Stimmt! Klopt! I don't know any other Germanic langauge that conveys a similar thought... Your go nonetheless!

Thank you, Marky!

Right: with what does JRRT think that people may associate his creation of Shelob, though he himself is dismissive of the idea?

Okay I'm pretty sure you're referring to him being bitten by a spider in his childhood in Letter 163, yes?

And if that has anything to do with my being stung by a tarantula when a small child, people are welcome to the notion (supposing the improbable, that any one is interested). I can only say that I remember nothing about it, should not know it if I had not been told; and I do not dislike spiders particularly, and have no urge to kill them.
Letter 163 To W.H. Auden.

Well, here's my guess:

At last they stood upon the summit, and looked down into a dark pit: the great cleft at the end of the mountains: Nan Curunir, the Valley of Saruman.

LotR Book 3, Ch4: "Treebeard"

But since it doesn't say "vale" as in your clue, I suspect I'm wrong.
