The Revived Tolkien Trivia

*Pulls up a seat next to The Judge, making sure not to get cinders on the impeccable legal robes or light the powdered wig on fire, and waits patiently for the rest to vote*

Well, that includes me...

 Son of Oswin, father of Audoin - travelled through time to see the Drowning of Númenor...The Lost Road and Other Writings

Hokay, this is how it stands, AFAIK:

For: Marky, The Judge, Grimward, HareBrain, Clansman.

Against: none, as yet.

Abstaining: pyan.

Poll closes 12th September, 2009

And in the meantime, the question was invalid: however, the correct answer was given, and it's not up to the answerer to query the validity of the question - therefore, it's HareBrain to pose the next one, using the presently agreed books...:p

*Thinks that HB wasn't alone in questioning the validity of the question*

But, since the show must go on, I agree; let's have one from the finished tales....;)

I'm afraid I wasn't paying attention, Grim - my apologies. Quandoque bonus dormitat Homerus...

3. Re Unfinished Tales, I still think we have chapters of stuff that hasn't been touched in the books that are currently allowed.

Oh yes - I bet I could still find one in the Hobbit that would need some working out.

How about a rule that you must choose a different book to the one from which you've just answered the last question?

Nooo. I've only two books to choose from anyway! Unless you are counting the three parts of TLotR as three separate books? (And don't anyone suggest I go out and buy the others. I had the Silmarillion for years and just couldn't get to grips with it.)

J

I don't have all the books present either... LOTR, Letters, Silmarillion and first five HoME.

Not to worry, your Honor; it's my impression that the trilogy has always been treated within this thread as just that; 3 separate books. If I infer correctly, you really should give Children of Hurin another stab, though; CT outdid himself in the re-telling of the tale (or perhaps, more selective knitting of his father's notes?). The characters come alive and take on personas (personae?) in a way that is absent (in my opinion) in The Silmarillion.

Accordingly, you have 4 books....

No Unfinished Tales, Marky? And what about you, Goldhawk?

Here's my question, then:

What creature results when Air meets Earth in thought?

(Probably need three quotes for this, but all close to each other.)

Any chance of a clue, HareBrain?

I see closing day for the poll was yesterday, but as the Chrons site was down much of the time, is the poll continuing a while longer?

J

OK, here's a clue. I might have phrased the question thus:

What creature results when King meets Queen in song?

Extended until 21.00 BST, 15/09/09, because of the kerfuffle...:p

The mournful sound of the wind blows across a desolate jumble of run-down buildings...a few tumbleweeds roll across the streets of the deserted town. Above, a faded sign reads "The Tolkien Quoting Trivia"...

Well, as no-one else has put a case against, and the majority of respondents have expressed a desire for it, Unfinished Tales joins the Officially Allowed Book List....

Aaargh! Stop getting my hopes up by adding non-answer posts to this thread!

And if you need more clues, just put my two questions together. I mean, air = King, earth = Queen, thought = Song - can't be many places you'd need to go looking, surely? It's not as cryptic as it might look.

Sorry to tickle the thread when this is not an answer, HB, but too bad.

Okay, it has been 18 days since HB asked his question. Hints, and no answers. In fact, very few postings throughout the Chrons in general. Is everyone at GoodReads now?

The faded "The Tolkien Quoting Trivia" sign is now hanging from one chain, the other having broken due to the dry rot in the wood to which it was attached. Soon, it will be in the dust...

And the tumbling tumbleweed keeps rolling by...
