The chronicles word counter!

Ha! :D I just hate writing them so much! My eyeballs are melting at my own smut.

Sex scenes are easy when you realize that the sex is less important than the scene. That usually takes the smut out of it.

I'm joking, really. I definitely don't do smut! I don't even write very explicit scenes.

It can't be if you are writing YA ... although some of the most explicit scenes I've read have been written by YAs.

Oh no, it's not for the YA one. (That has only one sex scene and it's a 'fade to black' one ;)) this is for a romance I'm trying (and failing!) to write.

Ah, well ... Romance ... I've found the only way I can write romance is to not treat it as a romance. Write it as a story with a romance (and sex scenes) in it. If you think about it, most great SFF novels have a romance, or in the case of some, just a relationship that might involve casual sex. I once began a SF novel in which clone races evolved through their sexual practices. I spent so much time describing the races, that I forgot what the story was supposed to be, although one of them does appear in the second novel (complete, but awful) of an incomplete trilogy.

Must get back to my new fantasy novel, which is now up to 7000 words.

Anne fades to black.

I'm working on some stories. It happens when summer rolls around.

Daughter of Death 36350

The Emerald of Glinda's Eye or The Emerald of Broadway I've yet to decide on the title, or even what this story really is. 3700 words.

SpellCaster 5000

My head is running out of ideas and my stories running out of stream, except The Emerald of Glinda's Eye it's getting somewhere, sort of at crawling speed. Daughter of Death is going somewhere, some how.

I've written a 500 word sex scene. (Is that too long?)

Romance is now 9,548 words.

Pretty much what I do!

Now you make me feel like a perv.

If you spend more than a couple hundred words on the sex, it is probably too much. Setting it up + the sex, I just measured one of mine at 440 words. The whole scene was 758 words - that is everything leading up to (relating to) the sex. If you are writing more than that, IMHO, the sex is more important than the scene ... you risk becoming gratuitous. If you are uncomfortable about the detail, that might be an indication that there is too much. Somewhere, I posted a diatribe about writing sex scenes. If I can find it, I'll re-post somewhere appropriate for you.

Anyway, the new angel story is up to 7591.

I've been working on my anthology of short stories, so I've been sharing time. Also, I have a sinusitis at the moment, and my sinuses hurt so much that I can't wear my glasses for more than very short periods at a time. Ugh.

The whole scene, including the set up is just over 1k. The actual sex is 445 words. (So yay! Only 5 more words than yours! I feel better now).

Cheers.

Yep, mine was including foreplay. (Actual sex sex is only 28 words!) And ta, I'll have a look now.

Here is my diatribe.

BTW, the 440 words, is right where the foreplay began - the sex was only half that.

Useful stuff, Anne (the diatribe, that is). I'm now dabbling in this and finding some things a little difficult, but the principles you described also apply to kissing, I discovered! It's all in the set-up rather than the execution.

Of course! Kissing is a form of sex.

"The Many" - still at 16k as I digest comments and work on my names. My little hive buddies seem to have hit a chord which is nice.

Not named yet - A short about robots and an idea from a 75 worder. 4k In and shaping up well, but the lack of a title or even an idea of one is odd for me.

Yep, good link, Anne. Mine's most definitely not gratuitous, so I'll start worrying less about it and just get on with it.

*Mouse looks forward to seeing alc's romance novel* :D

Done a smidgen of writing today. The romance is now 10,884 (though 85 of those words are notes).

The weekly check in: Galaxy, unchanged.
Waters and Wild: up to 31514 and nearing the first draft of the end scene. (Although, I'm a-wondering, it might be a mini climax instead, this one just wants to run and run...)
And now it's on hold while I try to YA Inish. Urgh.

Still working on Inish. I'm on page 180 of 260 of YA-ing it. It's going okay. It's still going to have an adult pov, which it's much reduced and all adult pov scenes are about the YA story. It now has a YA romance. Gosh. Anyway, I'm hoping to get this finished and a read through for continuity by next Friday and then away. Eeep.

Ha! Some day, some day... (the rate has slowed; it could be a long way away...)

Oh, great. We're all at it. Must be the summer.
