New GRRM Update on ADWD

A thought (spoilers):

Could Quentyn be Dany's third betrayal, the one for love. The way I am hearing that he swoons over her as the most beautiful woman in the world before he even meets her is not a good sign. If she rejects him and his advances of undying love for someone else like Loras or Victarion or Tyrion or Young Griff or Jorah, he may betray her instead of admitting failure.

The latest from GRRM, with some good indication of progress being made:

Snowing like hell in Santa Fe today. I feel like Jon Snow on the Wall. White everywhere I look, and still coming down.

Of course, I'm writing about Meereen, where the weather is hot and muggy, oppressive. If the snow keeps falling, I better take it as an omen, switch to a Jon chapter tomorrow.

The good news: finished a chapter today.

The bad news: it's one I've finished at least four times before.

This time, though, I think I finally got it right. We'll see. Still whacking at the Meereenese knot.

I took an especially vigorous hack two days ago, by switching to a new POV. It seems to have helped. Helps to have a pair of eyes on the inside rather than the outside here. And back story works better in recollections than in dialogue.

Let's hope that when next week comes, I still like what I did this week.

Writing, writing...

That was so...somewhat and sort of encouraging. Especially the part about hoping that he still likes it next week.

I think I'm going to go buy the rest of the Malazan series...in the hope that even though I can't understand it, at least I can read it!;)

GRRM will either solve the Meerenese knot or he won't. In the meantime, we should be glad that he's still trying new approaches rather than giving up on it.

Personally - perhaps I'm an optimist after all - I think he will get something with which he and we will be happy.

I agree, Ursa, but, he could throw us a little bone with his updates, instead of filling us with a quasi-mishmash-hope-despair thing. "hope I still like it next week"? C'mon!

If he said nothing, some would complain. Give the guy some credit for honesty.

(As someone who has been ecstatically happy with some of my writing only to discover, very soon after, that it truly stinks, I can - at a much lower level of "achievement", mind you - recognise what he's dealing with.)

GRRM is underselling his progress at the moment because of the amount of crap he got for giving hoped-for completion dates and then missing them.

This news is reasonably encouraging, indicating the second (of four) Meereenese Knot chapters is down and out of the way. How much work lies beyond those four Knot chapters is unclear, but not too much more, since he had 1100 (out of a planned 1300, although they could have changed now) MS pages locked and edited in October.

GRRM posted that he finished a Jon Snow chapter today. Text of the entry was simply 'nuff said. mood- accomplished.

He had said that he would move to the North if it kept snowing in SF, as it would be an omen,

The dance moves on a bt, nice progress over the past couple of days.

At this point I'm just assuming ADwD will come out sometime around the release of the HBO series and not sweating it too much. The cross promotional opportunities of syncing the releases just makes too much sense.

Clansman- how far are you into Mazalan? I'm working my way through at the moment (just started Bone Hunters), and while it took me a while to warm up, I'm really digging it. The whole was so baffling to begin with I've found the slowly doled revelations really satisfying.

Ok, so Mr. Martin makes a "Not a Blog" post containing:

1. A picture of ADWD
2. The words "'nuff said" next to it
3. Mood: Accomplished

and then gets upset when people ask him if this means he is done. I'll admit that when I saw this, I (for a few seconds) actually thought this may have meant he was finished. And if I thought it, you know people are going to ask him.

It almost seems as though he likes this type of controversy/bickering/dissention/etc. If he didn't want comments/questions about whether or not he was finished, why would he have posted a picture of ADWD, the words "'nuff said," "mood: accomplished," then proceed to allow comments? He knew this would happen.

He just needs to stop "not blogging."

It looked to me like a pun**, i.e. he used the image to point out that the Snow with which he'd had a good day was Jon Snow, not the white stuff that falls from the sky and may accumulate on the ground.

And who wouldn't want to poke a bit of fun at those who desperately hang on (and dissect) every word one utters. (Just be glad I'm not a writer of best sellers. ;))

And if I were being truly cynical, I'd be tempted to interpret the graphic and the "Aggrevated" of his next post as a metaphorical red rag to a (load of) bull. (He plays with our emotions in the books, so why not on his blog?)

** - On the other hand, I'm always seeing puns where none were intended.

Ursa, you and I are on the same wavelength on this one.

I think it's pretty clear the message we will all get from GRRM when he's actually finished and it's not the first time he has said this.

I also agree with Wert that he is underselling it.

I am in the midst of Memories of Ice (the third time I have tried reading this book). I am finally starting to figure this series out a little. I found it very frustrating, but the disparate pieces are finally coming together enough that I am getting an outline of the Malazan universe. One day, I will re-read, and I am sure it will make much more sense.

Martin and Wurts are waaaaay easier to comprehend, and for that reason, I like them better, but Erikson is really starting to get interesting.

Now back to our regular programming...

Okay, I appreciate that GRRM is underselling. From my personal perspective, and notwithstanding the howling of the impatient masses, I'd rather not hear anything from him until he says "Manuscript submitted to publisher". Just my own preference. I can ignore the lack of ADWD until then.

Then don't read his blog...? Trust me, you'll hear it here when he's finished.

And I'm guessing that there will be a thread here on the Chrons, with a title something like: "GRRM Finishes ADWD!!!!!!!"

(Sorry, but I am, for the moment, unable to predict the number of exclamation marks in that title.)
