New GRRM Update on ADWD

I don't read his blog because I know it would just annoy me. I'm pretty happy just getting my information from this forum. I like this happy, little place. For the most part, we just discuss the series and that's about it. I'm glad that there's very little "FINISH IT, GEORGE" drama here. That's why I keep coming back to this forum. It's bad out there on other forums and in the blogosphere.

Right now, there's a huge blowup going on that started when someone posted an excerpt of the new Dunk and Egg novella on their blog. Emotions boiled over quickly (no one seemed to care that they were getting a preview of the new story) and now all the usual defenders are launching their own salvos of retaliation on their blogs. It's ugly and stupid and it doesn't take me long to stop reading all that junk and come back here to read more of whatever we're discussing at the time.

I think George sometimes forgets how much the ASoIaF fanbase has exploded since AFFC came out (which sometimes doesn't actually seem that long ago, until I look at the five-year gap in the dates) and that a lot of people now commenting on his blog and so forth weren't around when he finished AFFC.

When AFFC was finished, he posted a massive picture of the book cover with "IT'S DONE!!!!!!!!!" in huge letters underneath. I assume something similarly unambiguous will happen with ADWD. However, all the 'ASoIaF-volume-completion-announcement-virgins' have no clue at all over this and thus interpret anything that could be the completion announcement to be the announcement.

And no, the book and the HBO series have no bearing on one another. Although given GRRM's current speed, I wouldn't rule out him announcing completion in March (around the time HBO is supposed to make its decision on the series), which may make it appear that way. I'm actually starting to suspect the completion announcement will be in May, on the unscientific but statistically interesting grounds that's when he finished ACoK, ASoS and AFFC in their respective years.

That suspicion needs a headline, Werthead. How about (choosing words almost at random):
GRRM May Finish ADWD!

;):eek::)

AND It Doesn't Suck!!!

Very encouraging news! :)
This is going to be a good year, good juju.

Setting: All your chips in one basket, you're forced to answer. If you don't get it right, you die.

Question: Will GRRM announce ADWD is finished in 2010?

All signs point to yes!

I would bet on it. And carry a glock.

Okay, I will risk my virtual life and bet on the first half of 2010. I'm not even a born optimist. This is doubling down because if I win, I also get the book to read!

I'm a mad woman on the stock market, too!

Eulalia, I'm with you on this one. First half of 2010 it will be.

I agree it doesn't take a "glass is full" kind of person to make that bet (and my glass is always full of a nice Arbour Red). All signs point there.

Wert-

I understand that the new book and the HBO series aren't really connected, but my thinking goes something like this:

If Martin finishes the book in, say, May and HBO slates the series to start in January 2011. It'll take at least three months to do the final copy editing and get the printing done so the earliest we'd ever see the book would be August (or more likely,September). At that point, if you hold off for another six months you can piggy back on all the press the HBO series will get. And the HBO series will get an extra bump with a NY Times bestselling book out there. Waiting will be good for everybody's bottom line.

For folks who've already waited five years what's another three or four months?

Oh oh. Illifer has a persuasive argument. I may need a lawyer--where is Bayou Boy? It depends on the definition of the word "finish".

I reserve the right to select a champion for a trial by combat.

You called, Eulalia, for a lawyer? What kind do you need? A solicitor or a barrister? I am on very good terms with a lawyer who is both...

Illifer is persuasive. However, pre-production of a book usually takes 9 months. In GRRM's case, he'd go to the head of the line, so they might squeak it out in 6, but 3 months is right out of the question. 6 months still puts it into November in time for a Christmas release, and two months in advance of a 2011 screening of A Game of Thrones on HBO. It is perfect timing for the book release to ramp up the hype for the HBO series.

I'll join in on the first half of 2010 to be finished the manuscript, and by Christmas 2010 for the actual book in my hands.

Any takers? There might be some good action on this!

All this prediciton talk has inspired me to start a new thread.

Right out of the question despite it happening to A Feast for Crows (well, that was about four and a half, but still)? And also four of the last five Wheel of Time books? ;)

That said, if holding it back does put it into the August-September bracked, holding back for October/November might make sense, as that's when most books in the year are sold. You don't release new books in December as they get lost in the carnage of the Christmas sales, but releasing the book in October-November will see a definite boost in sales, certainly far higher than holding it back to it to tie in with the TV series.

And then you get a second boost when the HBO's series is on the TV.

Instead I'm floating off the Isle of Cedars, or racing across the sands of Dorne. Warm places, both of them, with nary a flake to be seen. But I'd better not change horses. If I keep on keeping on, I should finish one of those chapters this week. Maybe both.

Were we expecting to see Dorne in ADwD? Is this a clue as to who the new PoV will be?
