New GRRM Update on ADWD

Where's my trebuchet?

Professional football in the US actually starts this year on Thursday, Sep. 9. Every week features a Monday night game, except the last week, Week 17. Almost all games are played on Sundays. Weeks 11-16 will feature a Thursday game as well, with Week 12 (Thanksgiving) having three games. Oh, and they throw in a Christmas Day game as well... on Saturday this year. The playoffs should commence on January 9, 2011 and culminate with the Super Bowl on Feb 6. That's exactly five months.

But if you include the month of pre-season games, and the three week wait after the Super Bowl to finish up the Pro Bowl (football's All Star Game), then the season takes seven months.

But the week after the Pro Bowl features the Combines (the combined work outs by college players under the watchful eyes of every NFL coach and executive). The week after that (around the second week of March) the NFL opens up trading season and free agent signing season. Then in late March or early April, the owners will have their yearly meetings. In the first week of April, all teams will open up for voluntary workouts and OTA's (optional team activities)... which all players are expected to attend. The NFL will hold its annual drafting of collegiate players at the end of April. The mandato... err, I mean voluntary workouts and practices will continue up through the end of June. In the second week of July, all teams will begin official training and last for one month. In the middle of this, the NFL will have it's Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Training camp officially ends with the first pre-season game in early August.

It neeeveeeer stops...

Sooooo... professional football actually is a year around activity in America. Since the full schedule keeps me from getting work done, I'd never expect the same from George.

And I understand that in the US there is a channel that shows NFL and NFL-related programming 24/7. Sounds like nirvana to me. And wholly distracting.

Having said that, I'm happy for George to veg out and watch whatever the hell he wants, whenever the hell he wants. Just as I'd suspect he'd be happy for me to do the same.

NFL Network has NFL 24/7. ESPN and ESPN 2 report on it every single day of the year. ESPN Classic shows old games. CBS, Fox, NBC, and ESPN all currently have contracts to show regular season games... plus the NFL Network.

Did you guys ever watch Idiocracy? In that movie, Americans favorite TV shows are OW! My Balls! and the m*********** Network.... 'Batin' is like, well you know what tha's like, but OW! My Balls! is a combination of America's Funniest Home Videos and the NFL.

It's amazing that Americans get any work done.

Heard in every house this fall...

Brees goes deep to Colston... Touchdown, Saints! <Click> Dear, I just want to catch the news... The Gulf Oil Spill continues into it's eighth month today... Dammit, Virginia! Put the f*&#! game back on!!! <Click> Sorry, dear... Hartley makes the kick and New Orleans goes up 28-0...

I no longer waste much time on football. I'm only in three fantasy leagues this year.

Why have you never dropped by the NFL thread? I keep telling you, it's not such a scary world out there. We keep the more deranged members on chains.

Well, most of them.

And some of the more eccentric posters there also post here.

Or so I've been told.

(I'm not sure who they are, mind.)

Okay, for most NORMAL football watchers, where the game is not an obsession, it is a five month endeavour, and you watch from September to early February (maybe August for the pre-season, but not necessarily).

GRRM, though, appears to love football as much as Boaz, so...

Let the man watch! If it helps his mind relax into writing the book, so be it.

I did forget about the Pro Bowl schedule change... That's it! I quit football forever!

* Passes on any attempt to help Boaz kick the habit. (Lost cause.) But won't block anyone wanting to let this thread run and run. *

Well, at least it's taken the vinegar out the thread.

My cable provider gives me the chance to sign up for 30 plus channels that show all NFL games so if you have 30 TV's you can watch them all I suppose.

They do the same for MLB (although they block the Jays games because those are shown on the Rogers Sportsnet Channel - with higher advertising revenue and part of a different cable package) and NHL of course. I did sign up to the NHL one last year but there was only so many games I could actually physically watch and won't do it again and just rely on the games shown on the main networks and Hockey Night in Canada.

Bob Cole is just the best play-by-play man in any sport. Period.

Getting back on topic:

In San Diego last night, GRRM told fans that he has 'about' 1,400 finished manuscript pages, plus the prologue, which he read. Assuming he hasn't changed it for the worse since last year, ADWD's prologue is probably the best or joint-best out of all of them (it's hard to beat AGoT's, but it's right up there with it), so cool.

As for how close he is, he was apparently irritated that he hadn't been able to finish ADWD before going to Clarion. That seems to fit in with other indications that completion is close (let's not say 'imminent' and get people too excited).

I'm a NY Knicks fan sitting here waiting for the Lebron James 3 ring circus to be over. No I won't watch the show. When I saw the huge red letters I thought ADWD was complete, if only for second.

I should have slept all day :(

post editted to eliminate a snarky remark that I would have felt I should have apologized for if it remained. Just feeling out of sorts right now. Pay no attention to that dwarf behind the curtain.

Well imminence is a lot better than nothing, so it doesn't add to my misery; rather the opposite, in fact.

I'm new to the books (just finished them about a month back), and Amazon UK has the release date listed for ADWD as 30th September. I pre-ordered it at the same time I ordered AFfC. Once I'd finished the books, I hit the internet forums - only to discover the HUGE controversy over the release date! (I was extremely tempted to dip into the forums before I finished, but I knew I'd ruin it for myself. I could not wait to finish to see what everyone else was taking about!)

I know that even if I have to wait till next Spring or Summer, it's no-where near as long as most of you have been waiting, but I was hugely disappointed that I (probably) won't be getting the book at the end of September :(

Welcome, Mesanna

Some of us are now cautiously optimistic that ADWD will be done in July. Recent chapter movement (GRRM migrated a couple of chapters out of ADWD) coupled with 1400 completed manuscript pages makes the more optimistic of us hopeful. If he's done by, say, July 31, the book will hit sores in time for Christmas. which is just a night in the cooler compared to the eternity some here have spent waiting, and waiting, and waiting............... :)

Looking forward to seeing what you have to say in future posts.
