New GRRM Update on ADWD

Excellent news.

(As long as he doesn't change his mind again, as even he suggests he may.)

The Dornish will come to believe that Nymeria the direwolf is the reincarnation of Nymeria the Queen and the snakes will march (or slither) out to join the wolves.

I make the odds on that about infinity-to-1, but you never know...:)

Interestingly, Martin has taken it as a good omen that his calendar picture for July is big gorilla, suggesting he thinks it is at least theoretically possible to finish the book in July, even given that he loses a week whilst at Clarion (which turns out to still be this week, despite reports that it had been pushed back a few weeks, explaining more why GRRM won't be going SDCC).

Whilst to be taken with a grain of salt the size of Nebraska, this would be a critical development for getting the book out in 2010. Finish in July and the book can get out in October/November. Any later and we fall back, yet again, to early 2011. Which would not only be more frustrating, it also sticks ADWD in the middle of an absolute raft of other big releases (although they can also tie in ADWD with the HBO series in that instance, as many people think they are planning anyway).

However, GRRM did tell a fan at a con a couple of months back that he was inclined to think a Spring 2011 release was more likely. If that's the case, it might come down to a question of if Team Voyager can get the book out in the autumn in the UK. A 2010 UK release 3-4 months ahead of the USA would be a huge boost to Voyager's sales (with the likely thousands of American ASoIaF fans completely unwilling to wait even longer for the damn thing ordering it off the Book Depository and Amazon).

The most compelling reason for me to not wait three to four months after the UK release would be that I'd have to avoid the Chronicles Network. Lent is only forty days, but I'd be forced off this site for 90-120 days! I cannot do it. I'll just thank the global economy and get my ADWD from the UK asap.

You could have your own thread, Boaz, where you'd make your suggestions and we'd say: "Could be."

I wouldn't wait an extra week. #-4 months would be totally unacceptable, and actually impossible, given my lifelong need for instant gratification in certain areas, books being one of them ;D

Not at all.

The Thread would be an affirmation of our desire to let you be an acknowledged member of the community through this difficult tome ... er ...time, whilst avoiding the slightest hint of a spoiler.

It's what friends are for.

(I think I got away with it.)

Good news maybe for the UK, except someone will probably see it as an opportunity to charge us twice the usual price (plus split the book again into two halves, a la ASOS).

Of course, I'd still pay it...but I shouldn't say that out loud.

I don't know what frightens me more, the fact that you folks want to torture me or that ADWD would be doubled in price or that ADWD could be divided in two. ADWD was already cut in half... to divide it again would make me cry... it's torture!

But given the huge gaps between the appearance of succesive books, the cost per year is actually quite low. :)

Well, the news about the moved chapters and the calendar are good. I'm an optimist, so I will say he is on the verge.

I would be interested to know what the other POV was he refered to when he moved those ones out of ADWD? Could they be the "suprise POV" he has promised that would not be hinted at or revealed until the book was released? Or could they be a Dany or Tyrion or Davos POV...

Hm, so with all of this rearranging and moving and what not, what are the odds that now the series will extend to an 8th book?

My first inclination is to brand you as a heretic. My next thought is, "What the heck... the more, the merrier!"

One of the reasons for the massive restructuring of ADWD was to keep the series to seven books, as far as I can tell, both for reasons of conciseness and also to satisfy HBO. Extending the book series also means adding another season and the expense of tens of millions of dollars to the TV series.

Not sure I follow you. Dany, Tyrion and Davos are POV characters in ADWD regardless.

I think that HBO would be delighted with an 8th book if the series is successful. One assumes they will air the series with the intent of making money. Th longer it is on the more money they will make aqs a result of it.

Or am I missing something?
