New GRRM Update on ADWD

I buy all of my books from Amazon, as I only get auidiobooks and the 40% savings is subsyanitial on a $70 book. If it's a book for someone else or if my wife needs to buy one (she's a big fan of the Public Library) we use our local bookstore.

Amazon is liting ADWD as july 12 btw.

I just pre-ordered the audio CD version for $44 :D Bassed on previous experience, I will get it on the 12th.

My plan is to get a lot of sleep the night before, brew a fresh pot of coffee, and listen to the book until i am done or until i can't stay awake any more. All calls will go to voicemail, anyone knocking at the door will be ignored. My wife will be out of town. If all goes well, I'll be done on the 14th at the latest, maybe late on the 13th.

I can't wait.

130 days to go, based on some quick mental math.

good news for you all in the UK

Good News for Old Blighty

My friends at Harper Collins Voyager have confirmed that the British edition of A DANCE WITH DRAGONS will also be released on July 12 of this year, simultaneously with the American edition.

(Please ignore what it says on Amazon.UK. I am sure they will get it right eventually)

Stupid Amazon.ca (Canada) doesn't have it up yet. I sent them a starchy e-mail chastising them for their negligence. I mean, the cheek of not having it up within 24 hours of the announcement of the most-awaited SF book in recent memory.

Anyone want to guess how I misinterpreted that? (OK, it didn't take much thought to realise the unlikelihood of it being released four months earlier over here.)

Edit: a bit embarrassed to realise I thought March 4th was still way off in the future! I need sleep.

Most pleased about this news. Dance with Dragons and Skyrim in the space of a few months. Hurrah!

It's been more than 24 hours and my powers of speech are returned.

So I'll second that Hurrah! I'll even third it (once for the release date and again for the co-transatlantic release). Does this mean I can place my order at Waterstones? Does it!?

So yes. Excited. This sounds very solid, so unless GRRM really does hate us and is planning on pulling this fine carpet from under our feet, I'd say there's cause to celebrate. :)

BadHabitt, you know what to buy her now :D

I can order it from Amazon as well which shows the correct date but we don't qualify for 'Free Shipping' all the way down here.

The delivery charges to Australia alone per order are $14! The whole book costs $20! Ridiculous. Hence why I am hoping bookdepository will be able to ship as well. Otherwise, it'll be down to the brick and mortar route for me as well.

I wonder if Roy Detrice was given a heads up to clear his calendar. Also, I hope Audible.com releases it on July 12 as well. Otherwise, I will pick up the physical book, whichever comes first.

I will be a happy camper for now until July 13-14th. This is when I'm sure GRRM will have me on the multiple cliffhanger feeling as we are on now. The prospect of those cliffhangers have me just as excited.

Which leads me to a question: which book left the most cliff hangers at the end?

Ever since the announcement, for some reason I haven't been able to get "The bear and The maiden fair" out of my head. You know the one, "The bear, the bear, all covered in hair.....".

Obviously that's no cliff-hanger, if only because the situation doesn't seem to include a close shave.

I think that just by virtue of the fact that plotlines will merge, major players will form alliances, and characters will get killed off, we're going to see fewer cliffhangers at the end of ADWD than we did, say, at the end of ASoS or AFFC.

Westeros.org is trying to find out who's doing the audio book. Apparently we may be in luck, as Roy Dotrice has recovered from his recent health issues more quickly than expected and, due to him cancelling some of his prior engagements, may now have the time to do it.

So there's reason to hope that Dotrice might be able to do it.

WOW, this is great news.

Now if we could get him to re-record AFFC :D

GRRM is said (probably by Werthead, at least here on the Chrons) to have delivered most of the chapters already. Presumably this benefits the production of the audio-book as well as the paper version of ADWD. This, though, may have scuppered Mr Dotrice's involvement.

Or is my estimate as to how long it takes to record the audio-book a lot longer than the actual time?

I agree with Imp. Unless GRRM is turning into Robert Jordan and the story spirals out of control (and I think the opposite - I think that was beginning to happen, but GRRM has spent the last five years writing and rewriting to avoid that), many of the separate plot lines will come together with a clear direction of where the story is going by the end of the book.

I'm not sure about a cliffhanger exactly, but I can see the book ending with a line something like "For the first time in many years, with her dragons above her and her army behind her, Daenerys stepped onto Westerosi soil".

On a side note, maybe we should have a new thread to bet on who dies and under what circumstances in ADwD. I do enjoy being morbid! :p:D

I was coming here to ask exactly this... you guys rock.

Wert, do you have any idea who they'd use if Mr. Dotrice isn't available? Was the anti John Lee sentiment strong enough that they'd use someone else?

12th July? That's for the hardback, I guess? I'm going to wait for the paperback. So long ago since I read the others that I don't think I'd know what was going on if I read ADWD straight away anyway. Going to watch the TV show to refresh my memory.

(Anybody know when the paperback will be out?)

Based on the prior books, the US paperback will likely be out in summer 2013 and the UK paperback - in two volumes if it needs to be reiterated - will be out in the summer of 2012.
