The official ADWD "Pick the Announcement Date" thread

GRRM has posted a short update on his "Not a Blog" today saying his hotel in Dublin doesn't have a business centre, so he's posting from an internet cafe. That doesn't sound like a man who carries a laptop around. I don't think he'll be doing anything on the book while he's abroad, not even reading. In his shoes, I don't think I'd risk carrying a print-out of my manuscript with me in case it was lost or stolen.

I'm still optimistic that he'll finish by the end of the year. Surely five half-written chapters can't take all that long? No, don't answer that!! :D

I see Westeros are reporting that GRRM has only 5 more chapters to write:

A Spring 2011 release date is looking strong!

Been gone for quite some time and got a b-day message from the forum...so I thought Id pop in and see what was up.

I read that post on Westeros and it has me optimistic. Cautiously optimistic I should say. I just hope this book was a contained elements which were difficult to work out and most of the rest is downhill coasting from here.

Anyway, just saying hi. Ill pop back in when I've finished the book. :)

I can't resist :)

It is almost eactly 5 years from the publication of ASoS

ASoS is 80 chapters

ADWD will be about the same lenght

GRRM has 5 chapters to complete, leaving about 75 chapters written

That equals .8 months per chapter

Call it 2.5 chapers to write, as the chapters arfe partially done

It will take GRRM two months to complete

He returns in Mid November, which gives us a mid January announce date

It should be pointed out that the gap between AGOT and ACOK was 2 years, between ACOK and ASOS another 2 years, so GRRM can crank them out. Hopefully he's past, or almost past the "knot"

Hopefully he's past, or almost past the "knot"

I wonder how thick this "Meereenese knot" is. I know he mentioned that he was having an issue with the ages of the younger children (Starks), in which was giving him problems. He mentioned that the series ending was bittersweet.

I cant help but to think that if he is as close as everyone suspects, he would be able to knock it out being that he's about 98% done with ADWD. The "Soon" talk has been going on for months. I'm thinking he's alot further away from completing than everyone is giving him credit for. (those citing end of the year)

Obviously, the plotline is complex enough to give Albert Einstein an aneurism.

Does anyone know of any other possible roadblocks that he may be encountering? (besides the fact that he's racking up the frequent flier miles)

My prediction is Spring 2012. >>>now on the stage dodging tomatos and oranges from the angry fans<<<

I didn't realise it was George's birthday today :D

Being as far through the manuscript as he is makes me think the same regarding the Meereenese knot, but then surely there'd have been a humungous "Hallelujah!" post on his blog. Or maybe not.

Even so, I imagine he won't be rushing through those last chapters either way, even if I am hoping for an end of year announcement.

*goes off to find some rotten blood oranges to throw at xLordSnowx*

@The Imp: I like your prediction of January 2011. It's got sound logic and mathematics, how could it possibly be wrong! :D

@xLordSnowx NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! [lobs oranges, tomatoes and holy hand grenades]

Being an eternal optimist, I'd like to think that once this book is finally out, it will take care of the worst of the knot, and hopefully the writing process will become easier. I actually almost feel sorry for GRRM as he obviously backed himself into a corner with his plotting and couldn't get out. The writing must have become something of a chore rather than a pleasure, hence the huge gap and numerous rewrites. I know how easy it is to put off something that you don't want to do at work, but eventually (with your boss breathing down your neck), you force yourself to do it. I can completely understand the appeal of going to another convention compared to tearing your hair out over a keyboard. I really hope GRRM can breath a big sigh of relief when this book is done and finally get back on track with his writing.

A friend of mine texted me earlier today. He was in Waterstones and somebody was getting a bit irate because ADWD was not out and the member of staff said it wouldn't be until next year.

Said person then demanded that Waterstones write to George R R Martin about it.

Thought that was funny :D

Waterstones is always emailing me, so it shouldn't be too much of a chore. ;):)

Can we hope for an April publication date, I wonder? (I suspect that may be too soon; though perhaps not for an announcement.)

It's really stupid of this person to get mad at the people in the bookstore instead of Martin himself or the publisher.
Course I am biased having worked the bookstores from 88-04.

FYI... Dec. 7th has come and gone... and so has my guessed date... and my court date (I plead guilty and was let go with a $35 fine)... and the attack on Pearl Harbor was remembered... and the Cataclysm happened on World of Warcraft.... such a busy day. But all that means that I get to pick a new day... and I choose...

Today.

Ever the optimist.

Victoria Day, 2011. I'm tellin' ya, that's the one (May 24 to you Philistines). 'Course, my first pick was Victoria Day, 2010.

So it's been five years since "The Promise" expired. Who's counting?

*1, 2, 3, 4, 5...*

I think it may depend on the NFL post-season, so I'll keep my powder try until the situation resolves itself with regard to certain teams.

I'll be an optimist and say December 25th of this year. If that doesn't work I'll pick my birthday, the that cat doesn't get out of the bag yet :D

But the cat got out of the river. I like the idea of HBO series and release, it just seems right.

Well, if the dirty Jets make it far...
Right now the Jets couldn't beat me and a group of my friends. They've manged 9 points in the last two games, losing both of them. If they don't turn things around they won't even make the playioffs. It's the Giants that are playing really well, and Eli Manning has already taken them to, and won, 1 Superbowl.

In any case, a football game takes 3 hours or so if you watch it live. GRRM is probably doing what I do now which is to either watch the game after recording it, which allows me to fast forward past commercials, half time, even som play stoppages, or to start watching the game after it started, maybe 80 minutes later, and then catching up to live using the same method as above (DVR also required) GRRm could watch both games in about 4 hours, and he COULD write and "watch" at the same time, depending on the tightness of the game.

Corn, sure rub it in. Since I missed with yesterday's pick. I'll pick... today.
