Discussing the Writing Challenges -- November and December 2010

Well this the first month I've really taken an interest (and part) in this - we're getting closer and closer to the voting date and there's 5 I can't choose between., and it was painful enough to get it down to five - the overall quality is magnificent!

J Riff -- clever, sagacious and witty I can certainly live with!!

nixie -- thank you

Perpetual Man -- join the club. This is what it's been like every month!

Just been having a think (don't worry, it's only bi-monthly) and wondered if it's not worth having some kind of overarching locked thread (this has probably been mentioned before). You know, to list winners and months' themes and stuff. I'm thinking it'll be particularly useful for the themes, 'cos I know when I was wracking my brains for one in October, I went through all of the previous threads to make sure I wouldn't be stepping on already used ones.

And voila...

Nice one, Cul.

Except now I really want to win and see my story on that prestigous list! :D

Must work harder...

Wonderful! I was worried that Mouse's mouse might not turn out right, as I recall it came out odd in the tie-break. But it's excellent. A good job, well done.

Me too, in fact - I'm not sure why it worked this time...

Yes, well done Cul - looks like a lot of work/coordination. Excellent!

A little, but it'll be easier to keep up than to create, as long as I remember to do it each month.

Phew! I managed to get something written on time!

It's funny, when I saw this month's theme I thought "Alright, this is great! Bring it!" ... and then the days went by, and the weeks, and all I got was a couple of vague hints of ideas.
Then, a couple of days ago, I sat down and tried to focus and wrote up a little something for my first idea, which is the one I liked better. I didn't like the result much, though, so this morning I had a go at that other vague hint of an idea.

The second story turned out very different to what I had imagined it would be, and became better than I thought. So I posted that. ...what's even better, it's given me an idea for something longer than 75 words too.

Well done, Chel. So that brings us to 43 for the month and with only a day and a half left. Then the agony of choosing begins...

Actually, that would be 42, Judge ... and rather less than a day and a half now.

And a reminder to those who will be tinkering with their stories almost up to the last minute: for a lot of us that last minute will come sooner. The times for the Challenge have always been GMT. For the Monthly Writing Challenges know not Daylight Savings Time; it is beyond their ken. As a result, for those of us who were on DST but are no more, there is going to be a difference in the time the Challenge closes.

If you have any doubts on what that means to you, check. It would be disappointing (for everyone) if you come along with a beautifully-written story forty-five minutes after the Challenge closes.

Ha, "tinkering" -- I wish I was tinkering!

I think I'm going to come down to the wire, so what is the official time going to be, then?

I can't believe I've written 29,000 words for NaNo this month and can't come up with 75.

The official time hasn't changed TDZ, it's still going to be 11:59 pm GMT on the 23rd. We are the ones who have changed ... or our clocks have.

Here in California that will be one minute to four on Tuesday afternoon. I think in Colorado (Mountain Time, right?) that will be one minute to five.

Aargh! I've just noticed the timing. I'm PAing a show over the weekend; rehearsal Thursday, performances Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Rigging and setup from Wednesday. And it's out in the sticks (well, vines actually; it's the wine growing region).

I promise I will do my utmost to log on and vote; I haven't missed one yet (and I can put my spreadsheet, already well prepared, onto a USB stick) but it might not happen…
