Discussing the Writing Challenges -- November and December 2010

Well, I've finally had an idea. (I'll have to check the current entries, though, to make sure it isn't like anyone else's; even then I'll just tweak to remove the similarities.)

I was beginning to think I was going to have to miss this month's challenge.

Ursa, another entry with a twist I did not see coming. I guess the old saw is true: "The more things change; the more they stay the same."

So that's why some folk haven't been around here in the last three weeks, TJ, though I haven't actually read about them.... ;):)

(And thanks for the kind words, Parson** and Beedchaser. :))

** - It's difficult to know how twisty an ending will appear to a reader when one has started writing based on a specific ending.

Still not caught up in the NaNo yet, but I need a break from writing!

That thread looks good, Cul! Glad the mouse turned out ok.

I've still not read many of the entries here yet. Better get on with that!

We're only two entries away from the big fifty.

Having said that, with Cul and HJ entering rather earlier than their usual last minute, it's less easy to guess from where those two might come.

Well Seph., mygoditsraining and Devil's Advocate are missing, having been reliable contributors; and Chopper's not done anything yet.

But anything over forty-two I consider profit.

You did!

So we reached 49 entries this month. Now for the (re-)reading, shortlisting and selecting....

I have twelve stories on my list right now, all worthy of a mention.

Karn and Xelah, lovely stories with a twist that made me giggle.

Paranoid Marvin, Talysia, Harebrain, StormFeather, Culhwh, thanks for the goosebumps!

Digs, loved the tone and feeling!

My final four, deserving a special mention, are:

Leisha: Poetic, thought provoking, scary!
Perpetual Man: I'd read more!
Mosaix: Chilling!
The Judge: Beatiful!

Since I can't have four votes, I'll go with The Judge's story. This one stuck with me since I first read it.

Voted - and though the standard was extremely good, yet again, I stuck with the one that made me literally guffaw on first reading, and that's Karn's little bathetic (in the true sense) gem...

Thanks for the mention, Chel! That was a nice surprise.:)

Another good month! I made a list early on this time, and added names whenever a story came in that I liked. Needless to say, there was a lot on my list, even then! I've whittled them down to the following, but I really enjoyed reading all of the stories.

Karn - From the Other Side
StormFeather - Test Subject: Species Unknown
Chrispenycate - First Contract
Mouse - Touch
Alchemist - Diplomatic Relations
Teresa Edgerton - La belle au bois dormant
Sloweye - Not so Nuts
Culhwch - Killin' Time
Challah Rajni - We Are Beautiful!

My vote this month goes to the story that stuck in my mind, right from the beginning, and that was Karn's From the Other Side.

Wowee wow wow. :D

It didn't actually take all that long to put it together once I got the initial idea hooked. Needless to say there was of course some rather merciless butchering, but I felt it flowed smoothly enough except where it had the two of them chanting out the spell.

Thanks to both Pyan and Talysia for the votes, I wasn't expecting any at all, much less two. :) Puts me back in a good mood. :)
