re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- July & August

I was thinking about the writing challenge last night and what an unmitigated benefit it has been (in my eyes, at least). Not only has it shown us the wealth of talent we have here, and opened our eyes to the work of some people who haven't posted much -- if anything at all -- on the Critiques forum, it's pushing each of us to improve, it's brought in new people attracted by the challenge, and it's definitely boosted the sense of community in Aspiring Writers. I love the chit-chat here and the discussions about the pieces.

I wholly agree. I always look forward to reading everyone's entries at the end of the month (as is my wont), and echo the sentiments of Ms Hoops a few pages back in her appreciation of the excellent variety in the pieces (I was in fact flattered she mentioned me amongst the illustrious company of Seph, Leish and Teresa - thanks Hoops!).

On top of that, I think for many of us it has really got the creative juices flowing, which has to be a good thing. On top of that, the competition has actually brought my friends One Big Potato and Axiom into the Chron community (I'm working on another!), and certainly my buddy digs has dived back in because of it.

So another cheer for Teresa from me - brilliant idea! And also one for Cul - I know he's certainly contributed to the organising of this venture.

Ah, so there is a down(-under) side to the challenge, then? ;):)

** Hello, Sleepless. Good to see your post here and elsewhere. See -- the water's fine when you plunge right in!

Thanks Judge :)

This was a real challenge, really useful in looking at how you can concisely get something across. Plus, the quality and ideas from other writers is great. Really fun comp.

HJ:

a bit disappointed with your hyperbole -

No cake, no icing, you forgot the cherry and unforgivably no glazing in which the fly can leave it's footprints

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- July & August

I think the frog pills have long since been towed away....

And to get back on thread: I'm glad this month's topic has brought out the usual wide variety of treatments.

(And some of the ideas seem quite obvious but, sadly for my ego, only after having read them.)

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- July & August

At this point I'm just waiting for the coasters to roll in and then decide what to vote for. I'm going to have to go through them one more time until I can get my decision made, but that's no Davy Crockett chore.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- July & August

Thank you everyone for the huzzahs, but what has made the monthly Challenges a success is the way so many people have responded to the challenge, and of course the wonderful, wonderful stories. As I mentioned at the beginning, when I first encountered the idea of a 75 word story, a room full of writers thought it was too hard and wouldn't make the effort. Never let it be said that the writers in our community are faint of heart.

And of course, Culhwch puts in far more effort than I do, because he sets up the polls.

We are now at 40, thanks to a genuinely chilling story by a new member.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- July & August

A chilling story made somewhat lighter by the fact that the entrant's name is "disc guy zed"....

*giggle*

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- July & August

have to say, I read the newest posted story, and found a smile tugging at the corners of my mouth - and then saw it was the first post from a complete newbie. And have to giggle along with Hoopy

Envy and joy in equal measure!:D

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- July & August

Suggesting that the 'guy' in question registered for this specific challenge; it's drawing in people from all over, not just down under.

I wish I could be sure it wasn't an ex-resident attempting to sneak back in – the 'Liechtenstein' origin recalls the period when Vatican City was the residence of choice.
Just as the critiques by thwilli suggest someone trying to sneak round the rules…

Not my problem, I suppose.

Disappears down the corridors humming the King's "Suspicious Minds".

Just as the critiques by thwilli suggest someone trying to sneak round the rule.

Interesting how perceptions may differ. Those critiques suggested to me that someone had read both stickies and was making an honest effort to fulfill the requirements.

But as for the idea that someone might have started a second account in order to post a story here, that would be fairly amusing considering the theme, but then there is this:

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- July & August

So now, after a little consultation, we are down to 39 stories again.

It is a pity, but since we know there has been a violation of the forum rules, we have to deal with it, and employ our own little choppers.

If the author of the story wishes to post that same story again under his usual Chronicles name, that would be very nice. It's a delightful story, and people should have a chance to vote on it.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- July & August

Ah. I would have been very happy to have been proved wrong, and forced to eat my words – I liked the story. I'm occasionally grumpy in the morning, and don't take well to summer heat, so, until my first mug of tea my judgement is extremely questionable.

But rules is rules, and exist for a reason.

And you have had to chide me in the past for overindulgence in critiquing things that were not within the guidelines.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- July & August

Hmm... I saw it as someone (you say "he", so evidently not the person I thought it was) posting the story from a disguise, thus keeping within the theme--because to me, the story itself was not about disguise, so the part that was in theme was that it was a disguised poster. Great story, anyway--sorry to hear it was an infraction of the rules.
