re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- July & August

Alright, alright, I've learned my lesson, I'll be good from now on! (Shouldn't Boneman be mentioning Patrick Rothfuss somewhere? Please? :D)

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- July & August

Perhaps the sequel to The Mage of Luca ought to be called The Bone Idol.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- July & August

I like that sound of that!

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- July & August

And all we need are 100,000+ words each to complete them. :)

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- July & August

Ursa - I don't know about 100,000+ words but there might be a couple of 75 word versions in next month's challenge :D

Mouse - spot on!

But at this rate I may have to take Boneman's advice and let fate decide.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- July & August

Alright, alright, I've learned my lesson, I'll be good from now on!

Most writers doubt themselves and their ability. You need to find it in yourself to believe in your work and your abilities. Get some self-confidence! :) I struggle constantly with lack of self-confidence and doubts*, and I know Teresa does. Until very recently I'd stopped writing because of it. At least you have published novels out there in the big, wide world!

TBH I hate posting up my work, such as in the seventy-five-word pieces. After I post I see all manner of things wrong, and I wish I'd taken longer to edit it. But that's what all of us feel to some degree, I bet.

So buck up and start believing in yourself! I come back off my holiday and odd posts on these last few pages, and loads of pages before that, seem to be about your confidence issues – eventually I found myself skipping them because they were so absurd, knowing how talented you are  - so have some faith! You CAN write, and write well. Otherwise you wouldn't be having all these people - I mean Teresa, for goodness' sake! – repeatedly telling you how good you are, and you certainly wouldn't be getting as many votes and making as many shortlists as you do.

:)

And believe me, I am one of the worst people when it comes to memory problems. I constantly said "Bonjour!" to shopkeepers on holiday in France - as I was leaving the shop! I couldn't remember the correct word 80% of the time! I even said it to a waitress as she handed me my third course during my five-course meal (I meant to say "Merci").

*And I've even been doubting whether I should post this, in case it comes across different from how I intended. Please no one think I'm being harsh, because that is not my intention! I meant this to be a sort of buck-up post, though have probably failed. I'm just tired from my travels and unable to write coherently and (probably) tactfully.

But, Mouse, you ARE good. Okay?

Now let's all encourage Seph to re-work one of his previously-written entries for this challenge, so he can post one in time. He has a couple he's written, but none he's fully happy with. Hurry up, Seph! He says he'll just not enter if he can't concentrate or write another one in time, but that would be a shame!

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- July & August

He has less than an hour! Everyone who hasn't posted a story yet has less than an hour.

Meanwhile, the rest of us have less than an hour before the agony of trying to decide a winner begins.

I did decide who to vote for one time on a coin toss. Neither entry came close to winning, so it didn't change the outcome of the voting ... unless three or four other people were tossing coins on the story that I didn't vote for and it lost for some of them, too. That would be a cruel twist of fate.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- July & August

I'm afraid I'm sitting this month out - my mind just ain't what it used to be. I don't know why, but I'm finding "Disguise" to be rather hard (curse you, HB!). :(

Not that I'm needed - the 42 mark has been passed, it seems.

Don't worry, I'll still vote. :)

Coarse you could just come as you are Lenny - As the ring bearer

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- July & August

Hooray! Seph posted a story. Quite an amazing story, in fact.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- July & August

And he wasn't sure anyone would like it!

I said you might. :)

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- July & August

I found it hard this month, too. I didn't get a chance to think about it during the two weeks I was away, which didn't help. I had an idea I liked, but was never able to knock it into a shape I was happy with.

But it would have been a shame not to participate. And so, with some prodding from Leisha, I've at least managed to post something, less than twenty minutes prior to the deadline.

Now I just have to decide for whom to vote.

[edit] Just saw your comment as I was about to post this, Teresa. Thank you! You've made me feel better about it. I suppose I should stick to judging others' stories, and leave others to judge mine.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- July & August

I thought it was very powerful. Even though I experienced that sensation spoken of earlier, as concepts outside my area of understanding went whizzing over my head. But sometimes you don't have to understand something to be moved by the power of the words.

If you were moved in any way, the story has already proved itself worthy of posting. In fact, the Word file is still open, and I do believe it's sticking its tongue out at me.

And I agree about not having to understand something fully to appreciate it. Some of my most favourite pieces, be they poems or passages of prose, are ambiguous enough that I have no idea what the author truly intended them to mean -- and yet, they make me feel. I'm someone who always wants to understand, but I find I don't always have to. Sometimes, just feeling is enough.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- July & August

voted. not an easy choice....

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- July & August

Well, Digs gets my vote this month. I actually think it could be improved by being shorter - I don't think the second paragraph is needed.

And Through the window, a flash of red is just a touch of brilliance.

Well done, Digs.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- July & August

There were many excellent entries this month (there always are, of course), and many jostling for my third place, but for me it came down to two entries, one serious, one humorous, both of which I thought particularly well-crafted and told complete stories. In the end the serious one was just so good, and not because of any cleverness in the title (which, as we all know, isn't part of the story and doesn't count :p).

Probably no need to say which the serious one was, but congrats to Hoops for being a close runner-up.
