Re: DISCUSSION, 300 Word Challenge, April

I finally got it all hammered out, as I was running in fear of Chrispy's listing me as a slacker. Here then, after endless toil to prove my worth, is my shortlist, shorter list, and *votes*:

alchemist -- Time is of the Essence
Brev -- Lord in Waiting
Talysia -- The Burdens of Divinity
*mosaix* -- Time After Time
Teresa Edgerton -- A Fairytale-Ending
Sapheron -- The Beginning of Time
Aun Doorback -- Grim Tidings
Anne Martin -- Gemini Rising
Parson -- Hi Ho! Hi Ho! ...
Moonbat -- Interspecies Diplomacy
The Judge -- Sun and Moon and Earth
Harebrain -- Pavel and the Horologue
*Boneman* -- Boxing Day Dinner
*HoopyFrood* -- Sign of the Times
digs -- Time and Son
Stormfeather -- Precious Time

There were several others I felt had a "something" to them that was great, but I was just missing it somehow. A fault of mine, surely, as well as the stories.

Re: DISCUSSION, 300 Word Challenge, April

Many thanks for the votes ChaoticHeart, crys, Mouse, Talysia and Teresa - they are very much appreciated! Never really expected any votes for my last minute entry, so five is amazing. And many thansk as well for all the shortlist mentions!

And I'm with TJ and alchemist - my vote is still coming! You can't rush these things!

Re: DISCUSSION, 300 Word Challenge, April

D.Z. Thanks for the short list. My story is getting more attention than I ever would have imagined.

Re: DISCUSSION, 300 Word Challenge, April

Being away on field work and this the first time in some time I've been near enough to civilisation to find a wireless network to steal off of some poor scottish islander, I haven't really had the time, nor am likely to, to read all the stories and vote. As such, for now I shall kindly thank those who voted for me and run off before anyone wonders why their modem is registering me and comes outside with a shotgun.

Rest assured I am looking out for any and all opportunities to read everyone's stories. Hopefully the pub I should be near in a couple of days time will have one. If not, I guess I'll just have to vote for a random selection out of the people who voted for me...

Re: DISCUSSION, 300 Word Challenge, April

Honourable mentions to Talysia, Templar, MstrTal, Chel, HareBrain. In truth, it could have been anyone, but these ones pricked my consciousness at just the right time.

The Shortlist

Mosaix, Teresa, Sapheron, HoopyFrood, Culhwch

Votes

Culhwch
mosaix
HoopyFrood

Well done everybody, and thanks to Moonbat and TDZ for the mentions.

Re: DISCUSSION, 300 Word Challenge, April

Many thanks for the votes, TDZ and Al!

And I do have my eye on the date (well, give or take a day, I can't always know what day it is...) and will vote...once I find time to sit and read through them all properly -- otherwise I'm just going to vote for the people who are nicest to me.

That, young lady, is blackmail (or at least very dark orange mail)

Even ignoring the fact that it means another vote that I can't even try for.

Re: DISCUSSION, 300 Word Challenge, April

Blackmail? Me? Why, I don't even know what such a thing is!

Muahahahaha.

Re: DISCUSSION, 300 Word Challenge, April

Sounds like a good plan to me, says someone who voted for her....

Of course, it wasn't such a good idea when Sapheron said it, so I know how you feel, Chris. :)

Re: DISCUSSION, 300 Word Challenge, April

Wow thanks for the mention Alchemist!

At this point I wasn't even expecting that. :)

Re: DISCUSSION, 300 Word Challenge, April

So I went to Barcelona, lecturing for three days... it was cold, raining and the television didn't work in my room, so I couldn't even follow the news. Standing up for the three days made my feet ache horribly, and the Spanish air traffic controllers had wildcat strikes that meant I got in three hours delayed. All in all, a dull weekend.

But I got back and found I had more votes! Thank you so much Slack, TDZ and TEIN - it gave me a major boost, especially since an opinion of some work I did on my own writing came back quite negative - even if the family memeber admitted she didn't know fantasy at all.

(And even better, the cat greeted me as my taxi dropped me back last night after midnight, as though nothing had happened... I reckon they do it to focus your attention...)

Re: DISCUSSION, 300 Word Challenge, April

At least you got Barca Boneman, I had to settle for Leeds. (Although I did have a good weekend).

And I'm very glad to hear about the Cat! Tell the little monster that Allanon said no more scaring people by pretending to be ill!!!

Re: DISCUSSION, 300 Word Challenge, April

Thanks for the mentions TDZ, Moonbat and Parson? (Who'd have thought, a man of the cloth liking my twisted version of creation...)

Re: DISCUSSION, 300 Word Challenge, April

In case anyone is getting anxious, we shall be extending the time for voting a little in view of the problems we've had over the last couple of days with Chrons being attacked. No decision yet on how long we'll extend for -- much will depend on whether the problems are definitely over yet.

Keep an eye here and on the poll thread itself for details of the revised deadline. But don't get complacent and end up missing out!

*waits for the inevitable smugness from the early voters...*

Re: DISCUSSION, 300 Word Challenge, April

Duly smugs.

Does that mean I can't post my black list yet?

And shows, yet again, how good our mods are... doesn't it make you sick that someone, somewhere, is feeling really smug because they (intellectual giants, that they are) managed to get malaware programmes into the chrons? Gosh, it probably makes their decade complete. What a decade... (Smith and Jones sketch...)

And I'm really chuffed that so many people like my story - thank you all so much, to those who voted for it, as well as the honourable mentions. Really gives you as boost, that.

Re: DISCUSSION, 300 Word Challenge, April

Have still to vote, but close to a decision now.

Just wanted to say thank you to Mosaix for the vote!

Re: DISCUSSION, 300 Word Challenge, April

This is my, highly trimmed, short-list (I think in order of appearance - ish):

Alchemist - Time is of the Essense
SJAB - A Conversation
Mosaix - Time After Time
Teresa - A Fairy Tale - Ending
Perpetual Man - Synchronicity
Chrispenycate - A Birth of Cosmology
Mouse - Ten to Death
Anne Martin - Gemini Rising
Moonbat - Interspecies Diplomacy
Harebrain - Pavel and the Horologue
Allanon - Time Warden
Crys - One for God and Freedom, One for Pope and Plunder
HoopyFrood - Sign of the Times
TheDustyZebra - The Last Thing

And I was stuck with three votes for four stories! Sapheron's The Beginning of Time, unfortunately, had to just miss out.

My votes are going to these three, very brilliant, stories:

Digs - Time and Son
The Judge - Sun and Moon and Earth
Culhwch - A Clockwork Heart
