Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

Wouldn't a magnifying glass also be of help...?

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

A brief announcement before the voting starts in a few hours:

We've decided to make this poll an open one (as we did with the 300 Word Challenge). If you cast a vote, other people will be able to see which story you voted for. This was done in the interest of greater transparency, which we feel is desirable now that the polls are on-site.

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

Gah! I thought voting was going to be easy this month, as there's one I really like. Now somebody has to go and post something else that I really like. Damnit!

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

Very, very true.

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

You never know, someone my come in with a belter in the next few hours and blow all the others away.

Someone named Culhwch or The Judge, for instance?

(Dropping leaden hint to the two just mentioned.)

I usually know who I am going to vote for by the time that all of the stories are in, but a second (or third) reading of the stories unmakes-up my mind on that point just often enough that I always go through and read everything again just in case I see things that time that I didn't see before. When that happens, there obviously has to be a third (or fourth) reading to choose between my new list of favorites.

Some months, though, I have no idea until I read through everything that second time. This is one of those months, which probably means many readings and some very difficult decisions.

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

Hint heard!

Well, I've posted, but I'm not at all happy. I didn't find the subject at all easy. Guess that's why it's called a challenge, eh?!

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

Flipping 'eck, TJ. What was I just saying about people going and posting ones I like when I thought I'd already decided, eh?!

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

Howdy,
Being old and having a poor memory may come in handy. I had some favorites a while back but I kinda forgot which ones I liked best. With all the new ones comming in I have to read em all again anyway.

AGREED! This month's challenge was very demanding. I felt like there were so many elements to juggle in a brief 75 words. The only way I was able to manage it (I hope) was to keep everything simple and natural. I actually toyed with a similar idea TheJudge but I wasn't able to make it work. You however, navigated it quite well.

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

How odd. I replied to Mouse, and the post is nowhere to be seen. Senility or something sinister?

Anyway, never mind. Thanks, Mouse -- sorry to make life more complicated for you! Thanks, GreenKidx -- yes, I came to the same conclusion about keeping it simple.

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

And here are a few more of my comments. As I like to remind everyone once in a while, I do my best to make them positive and there is no malice intended!

goldenapples – An interesting one this, yet another different interpretation of the theme, with religious connotations, people preparing to sacrifice themselves for what they believe – although I guess the end is open to interpretation – did the peaceniks ‘make ghosts’ of themselves, all all those around them ;)

Doz – If it’s not cats, it’s dogs... A well constructed story riffing on a familiar film. Of course the dog in handbag thins made me think of Paris Hilton, but the idea of a great wolf being called fluffy made me smile for quite a while afterwards.

The Spurring Platty – Clowns. Why did it have to be clowns? And a sneaky kitten reference too. A good story, but what I really liked was the idea that clowns could change just by changing their face. Near genius that.

Greenkidx – This is one of those stories that sends my imagination ticking over, over-time and I suddenly start asking questions –how did Nettie pay Ellie’s debts? With money? With her youth? And what were those debts? Always love this type of story. Another excellent job, thought provoking, touching and friendship.

Bookstop – A sinister friendship this one, or at least the way I’m seeing it. Someone eliminating the competition just to be a best friend? What a cool idea! I loved the way it was presented, and the story itself. Could quite easily read something a lot longer (Only it isn’t allowed)

Stormfeather – Another nice spin on a staple idea, a vampire, but not creating a new vampire out of bloodlust (well not completely) but out of the need for a friend. It’s quite easy to imagine a reviled immortal becoming lonely and this idea is quite an interesting view on dealing with it.

OBP – Hehehehehe I really liked it! Very funny, clever and full of fun. I’m sure that’s not a view one thinks of when they see a giant reptile pounding through their city, but it seemed such a simple but great tale. Or even tail. Really loved the big guys real name too!

Cornelius – In some ways very thematically similar to the one above, different perceptions of mythical/fictional creatures, but different angles as well. This one is equally well put together, but seemed to have a more emotional feeling to it, almost a underlying sadness that unacceptance has brought to the creature.

Ursa - (Congratulations on 8,000th post). I don't know if I'm taking a turn to the dark places of my soul, but I'm starting to see grim sides to all these stories, probably that are not there!!! I like the idea of animals (I think it's animals, probably kittens) coming together in the city to survive, sharing food. I did wonder about the best friends being together, body and soul.... no, no I'm going to a far too dark place.

TJ - One of the ideas I really like is presenting the idea of the city being the friend, and I really like the way that TJ presents it here. It is often said that a city is a living breathing thing, and that is taken another step here, with the city literally coming alive to protect its friend(s). Excellent.

I'm posting this now, and would like to say quickly that I'd normally leave it until any stragglers are in and post in the morning. Tomorrow is a special day for me and won't have the time to do anything like writing my comments.

Needless to say, I will not leave everyone out, but will just be a little late with the last few comments

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

Yes... er... lots of lovely kittens... er... purring together in... er... furry harmony....

MWHAHAHAHHAHA...!

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

I hope your special day is special in a good way PM. And thank you for taking the time to do comments on the stories in spite of it!

It's always enlightening to read your reviews, because you pick up on so many nuances that I might otherwise have missed.

As for the kittens, I rue the day that I ever mentioned the furry little monsters in this thread. Next month, I shall measure all my words more carefully before I post them! (Note to self: avoid mentioning felines, particularly the young ones.

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

As ever there's way more variety in the stories than I can wrap my head around, and there's always the "last-minuters" (you know you who are*), but I think I'll be good to vote.

*Let's face it. It's Cul.

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

Did anyone else see Ursa trying to subvert the " -000 post is for critiquing" tradition by putting it in the challenge instead? I think the Dubious Posts Committee needs to be convened.

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

Feel free to critique it. (Note the fact, for instance, that kittens aren't mentioned....)

Let's face it, more people will be critiquing entries in the challenge threads - though not necessarily telling us about it - than in the Critiques section, if only as part of the personal voting process.

So not, I would contend, the least bit dubious.

(Though I'll admit to being cunning.... :))
