Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

Some excellent stories this month but, for me, more than one or two seem to miss either the theme or the genre. Still, that doesn't make it any easier to choose between the others.

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

Did anyone else see Ursa trying to subvert the " -000 post is for critiquing" tradition by putting it in the challenge instead? I think the Dubious Posts Committee needs to be convened.

That's just plain sneaky.

Do we, should we, have a -000 post commitee?

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

TJ, is that Manchester City 4 - 0 Wolves? :)

BTW the actual score was Manchester City 4 - 3 Wolves.

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

One of Cul's more notable cliffhangers: will he or won't he? And at about 10 minutes to the hour, he did, and another excellent story at that.

Does he really produce these at the last minute ... or spend the entire 23 days polishing?

Sign me,

Suspicious

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

It's probably the 23 day thing, you really can't cut things so closely every time.

Speaking of which, I went for my original decision in my vote-Nixie. :D Gotta love fish and chips. ;)

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

Actually, this one was written last Friday, and polished just in the last hour or so. Most times I have a sentence or two, or at least the germ of an idea, bubbling away in the back of my mind all month, though. I was close to posting this one over the weekend, but I figured posting early has done me no favours in the past. Besides which, I like getting the last word in...

The three hundred worder was genuinely written at the death. I think I had the first sentence or two, and the vaguest idea of where I wanted it to go, and that was it. That was the most unprepared I've ever been coming up on closing time.

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

Well after careful consideration and multiple rereading my vote went to HareBrain. Something about supernatural animals wielding bazookas brings back memories of my youth and a rather amusingly unstable friend who used to paint pictures of heavily armed mice with heavy armaments scattering each others body parts across a colorful horizon.

My rather lengthy "short list" includes: Bob S. Sr, Nixie, High Eight, Allanon, Talysia, Mosaix, J Riff, TheDustyZebra, Gary Compton and HoopyFrood.

There where plenty of others that I truly loved but felt where just a little off the mark when it came to the genre. That said all of the entries where wonderful and great to read.

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

Aww thanks, MstrTal!

Teresa, I'm with you on this one -- this may be the first month that I haven't had even the slightest idea whom I might be voting for, before it ended.

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

I just wanted to say a quick thank you to Perpetual Man for your kind review. And I'm actually toying with the idea of expanding this into something longer. These two characters and their story and the mythos/magic surrounding them have caught fire to my imagination. A true first for me in this challenge.

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

OK, narrowed it down to four from the original six or seven. See cryptic clue to who got the vote. It had all the required elements IMO.

JRiff: How many of us have suffered the same indignity. People get so possessive about the even smallest things.

TDZ: 'The Good Life', gone bad.

(For those not familiar with the series :- http://www.bbc.co.uk/comedy/goodlife/)

Teresa: Just another night on 'The chrons?

My reply went to 'Rabid Dog'

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

Hi,

Just remembered it was time to vote. I stayed with Mr Blob, though I have to say MstrTal's have wand will travel was most enjoyable. But what exactly is a 'chav'?

Cheers.

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

goldenapples – An interesting one this, yet another different interpretation of the theme, with religious connotations, people preparing to sacrifice themselves for what they believe – although I guess the end is open to interpretation – did the peaceniks ‘make ghosts’ of themselves, all all those around them ;)

It's a good question. The word "getting" in the title can be read in several ways.

I can't decide between Mouse's civil partnership in the sewer, MstrTral's "deranged kittens" and J Riff's "lawn mower", but I like them all.

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

Thanks for the vote Psychotick. It has made my day :)

A chav is a modern insult, there is a urban myth that it stands for Council House And Violent but really it is a term for someone with no class and less morals.

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

It should be noted that my vote is a mistake, I was meant to click goldenapples' post. I've asked Teresa to change it for me :-/

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

Another month, same whinge - it's so difficult to choose!! My intitial shortlist had 23 stories, for goodness sake!

But, there have been mentions that some stories were a little off genre, so I decided to go with those stories that really were about friendship. I still haven't chosen!!!

Can I just give 4 honourable mentions? Firstly to Paranoid Marvin, who twisted the idea of friendship so cleverly that he made my short list. And Aun Doorback - I couldn't get the tune out of my head for days, and thought it was a neat take. Then OneBigPotato, even though it wasn't about friendship, really. Made me laugh. Finally MstrTal, bearing in mind some of the ads you see in the freebies, this wouldn't have been out of place!

So: my (not so) shortlist...

Harebrain - probably the most consistent 75 word writer, and I loved the shopping trolley. The image of a vampoodle will make me look at dogs differently...

Paranoid Marvin - left me wondering if the duplicity really would work. But Parson (pass-on?) will tell us, I'm sure.

Chrispenycate - to bring over that much in 75 words is amazing.

Gary Compton - even though I had a picture of them lying in Harrod's window, I thought the idea of 'friendship' being bought was terrific.

Mosaix - great story, told in present tense, like Chris's, and the last line still makes me smile when I read it.

J Riff - I saw Calvin arguing here, and a great take on a suburban everyday event - the lawnmower, that is... I could see Chumblington up before the beak, for lending to earthlings.

TheDustyZebra - quite horrifying, in its simplicity. A story that could be expanded so easily.

Reiver 33 - so much said in what was unsaid, and a brilliant last line.

Stormfeather - a rotten twist on friendship that was awfully good.

The Judge - as consistent as harebrain in producing 75 worders. And a really original take on urban fantasy that was unexpected.

My final three: Chrispenycate, Mosaix, and J Riff. (Can I have three votes, please? Would make it so much easier...)

It's taken me over an hour since I made the final list, and I can't separate them. But being forced to choose means hard decisions. Tossing a coin made it easier... but not much. They all truly deserve to win, in my humble opinion.

The coin fell for Chrispenycate and I really hated leaving the other two out...

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

For me it was down to Aun Doorback and Teresa. I'm a sucker for angels, so Teresa got my nod.
