Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

A seriously good month.
So many brilliant entries, ok, so my short list (after numerous re-reads) is

Harebrain - Rebels
Nixie - One rather wet evening
MstrTal - seeking corporeal encounter
Mosaix - Kindred spirit
J Riff - Only is you say Pleaides
Telford - Man's best friend
Digs - Part of your World
Chel - never trust someone you meet on-line
Dozmonic - woof woof
OneBigPotato - A Mother's worst nightmare

It was so hard to choose between them, I loved Dozmonic's and Telford's similar stories with were-pets. Obviously Harebrain's lycat and vampoodle was genius. J riff's was crazy but brilliant. Digs' was a front runner for a while, it really struck me on first reading, so much depth in his world and some interesting creatures.

But after all the re-reads I had to go for OneBigPotato and his letter home from Godzilla. It kept me smiling after each read.

As usual, well done to everyone who took part, another great month of stories, and 50 + this month. :)

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

I hope your special day is special in a good way PM. And thank you for taking the time to do comments on the stories in spite of it!

Thanks Teresa, and I'm back, with only one last comment, albeit a little too late!

It was a good way, Wedding Anniversary spent out on the wild moors, with a traditional Devon Cream Tea squeezed in somewhere as well (not to mention a trip to Pixieland...)

But enough of that my final comment of the month:

Cul – Another one that is a love for the city, rather than an individual, but this one shows the city as simply that: a thing, no connection to any living thing, and yet something that the inhabitants can simply love. An excellent last entry.

I'm not quite ready to vote yet, but it's an unusual month as I don't really think I need to make a decision. From the moment I read one story it just burrowed into my head and has been sat there nicely shouting, "Vote for me!"
SO I think I'll read through them all again and just see what happens but I think I know deep down....

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

And so, streaking to an impressive one point lead over the dusty zebra and Dozmonic is … I don't believe it. Many thanks, alchemist, Boneman, Ventamist.

ctg's never going to forgive me; after all the bullying I did trying to get his articles straight I go and write a piece without any, and get votes for it, too.

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

The creme de la creme of short stories was posted by Crispenycate. If he doesnt win I'll bare...

Hang on a second I've heard that one before.

Have I took my tablets matron?

Anyway, he got my vote.:)

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

Thanks for all the mentions so far, and to MstrTal for the vote.

I could have made a shortlist of about half the entries, but narrowing it down a bit further (and maybe a bit randomly, sorry), I end up with:

Slack -- interesting little nugget, fits the rich fabric of Indian life somehow
Chrispy -- where did this come from? Completely unlike your normal style, but superb
Aun Doorback -- lots of great imagery and a real denseness and richness to it
J Riff -- nothing to say but ha ha
TDZ -- very clever and crafty
Reiver33 -- inventive and effectively handled
Ventanamist -- intriguing, poetic, beautiful
Teresa -- I can see the last line on a film poster
OneBigPotato -- funny and endearing

For the first time, I want more votes. Even with my hardest of hearts, I can't bear not to give both Chrispy and Ventanamist a vote each.

The next few days, and maybe, horribly, a coin-toss, will tell.

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

I had a blast reading all the entries! Thanks everybody. It was a nice theme - am sorry I missed it.

I have voted. It was the last line sold me ;)

Quick - how can I get my post count up fast so as I can enter in June?

Grim

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

You don't need a special post count to enter. ;)

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

Is Chris saying there is an error in his writing:eek:

Error? Apart from thinking I ought to have used an extra question mark (as it wouldn't have been counted against me).

I just broke a few rules, is all. No way there were going to be enough words to tell the story grammatically, so out went all those silly "the"s and "a"s.

A bit tiring for more consistent works…

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

Ugh, I feel this month my entry was more of an idea than a story. I think I'm stuck in a bit of a rut - I'm gonna gun for something entirely different next month!

Thanks for the couple of mentions, and to Perp, as always.

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

Cul – Another one that is a love for the city, rather than an individual, but this one shows the city as simply that: a thing, no connection to any living thing, and yet something that the inhabitants can simply love. An excellent last entry.

It's amazing how a string of words as small as we're allowed here can be interpreted in such different ways. By which I mean this interpretation wasn't my intention at all, but I can totally see how it could be read as such. And as this interpretation is a little more profound than my actual 'love for an individual' intention, I'm going to run with it and pretend it was intention all along...

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

Wow, so I finally manage to get back here after the Chrons not loading for me for weeks and it's time to vote... eep!

My shortlist:
Chris
Allanon
Moonbat
JRiff
Boneman
Teresa
Hoopy
and Cul

My vote went to Moonbat because, well, it made me smile :)

And a much belated thank you to PM for his lovely comments! You, sir, surely deserve a medal :D

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

Thank you to Perpetual Man for your lovely words yet again. It's a joy to read your posts! :)

And Thank you Boneman for the lovely mention. :)

At this point, I like too many and need to brutally cut down on my favourites. Hope to do this either tonight or Saturday. Tomorrow is out as it's my last day at work, and there is a bit of a celebration/farewell do for all of us (nearly 10 in my dept) who become redundant as of the end of this month. Can't wait!! :D:D
