Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

Parson - thank you for mentioning me in you '''very good stories" catagory - high praise indeed.

The Spurring Platty - thank you very much for not only shortlisting me, but also voting for me - a totally unexpected but very cheering event to wake up to after a heavy night!

About to take the kids out on their bikes in the hope of wearing them out, and then intend to relax and focus on the stories while hubby goes out to watch the Champions League final tonight.

I will vote before the deadline . . . promise!

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

If you drill into one of the votes you can see who's voted for who.

Oh dear I should read everything before replying

I went for Chrispy in the end, though it was close.

I think that's two months in a row. Maybe I should start stalking him.

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

I did mean to vote for one big potato, but I may have a blind spot with apples and potatos (I was rubbish at French!)

As requested in your PM, I've altered the numbers to reflect the fact that you meant your vote to go to OBP.

One advantage to the open voting is that people can see their mistakes, tell a moderator, and the voting can be adjusted. Of course we would rather that mistakes were not made. It makes the voting look odd after we make the changes, because we can fix the numbers but not the names. (So please, everyone, in future make doubly sure that you've clicked the right name before you click submit.)

There were two mistakes this time, and ironically they both involved goldenapples -- a vote that should have been and one that was not intended.

For those who haven't voted yet, as of now there are slightly less than seven hours left.

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

With such a nail biting count down to the deadline I am glad I am an early voter.

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

One minute to midnight (GMT) tonight. If you're on Daylight Time, adjust accordingly.

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

I give up! I've managed to reduce my initial shortlist from 33 (there are a lot of your stories that I like) to 15. However, I''m struggling to reduce it down any further, so am just going to post all 15 as my shortlist. So, in the order that they were written:

Harebrain
Parson
Paranoid Marvin
Chrispy
Allanon
Talysia
Aun Doorback
TheDustyZebra
Digs
AS Besham
Teresa
TEIN
The Spurring Platty
Cornelius
The Judge

In the end, it was a close run thing between HareBrain & Chrispy - a vampoodle vs an elf. The elf won by a mere fraction.

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

That was worrying -- I couldn't get onto the forums for a while tonight, and I was only half-way through re-reading all the entries at the time! I'm going to have to stop these last-minute postings before I run into real problems.

Anyway, having (eventually) managed to read and re-read and re-re-read the stories, I've come up with a short list. To my mind, a good many of the entries this month failed to fit into my -- probably very narrow -- definition of urban fantasy, so I was quite hyper-critical in excluding them; and then quite hypocritical in including others which perhaps still fell the wrong side of the dividing line but I couldn't bear to leave out.

My shortlist:
Brev -- A Human Weakness -- clever and unexpected ending
chrispenycate -- Elf Discovery -- brilliantly written
digs -- Part of your World -- poetic and poignant
HareBrain -- The Rebels -- if only for the genius of "vampoodle"
reiver33 -- Imperfect Day -- let's face it, reiver is urban fantasy noir!
Teresa -- One Night in Pandaemonium -- wonderful last line
TheDustyZebra -- The Breakfast Club -- witty title, clever piece**

I debated long and hard but in the end voted for Chris's for his sheer brilliance in writing the whole piece without articles -- the condensed feel fitting both the locale and the otherness of the elf, which made me disregard both spelling and punctuation mistakes which should otherwise have resulted in his disqualification!

Also mentions to No One, whose story was very well written and Lucky Lola whose piece was beautifully poetic -- I loved both, but they missed out on the shortlist as they didn't quite fit the genre as I saw it. Also a mention for Ursa -- after puzzling ever since I first read it, I finally got it! I think...

** pity one of the members of the Club didn't take all the valuables from the dead, since that would have made him a receiver of stolen property, and, as we all know, good fences make good neighbours... :D

And thanks to all who mentioned and/or shortlisted my story!

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

A difficult month to judge - so what's new? - and database errors notwithstanding, but here's my pick of the bunch. (As usual, the stories are ordered by date of posting within category.)

Honourable Mentions:
  • The Rebels by Harebrain
  • One Rather Wet Evening by nixie
  • Seeking Corporeal Encounter by MstrTal
  • Once Upon a Time by HoopyFrood
Runners Up:
  • The Breakfast Club by The Dusty Zebra
  • Imperfect Day by Reiver33
  • A mother's worst nightmare by onebigpotato
Winner:
  • Kindred Spirit by mosaix.

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

Many thanks to Hoopy and crys for two more votes (!!!) and to Stormfeather, TJ and Ursa for more kind mentions!

TJ, that is absolutely hilarious that you say that, because "good fences make good neighbors" is the phrase that somehow set me off in the direction of this story! I don't know why a fence of that sort didn't occur to me, but it's a good thing, because there wasn't any room anyway. I didn't know if the title would be as clear to anyone else or not, implying a collection of misfits getting together. :D

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

And not surprisingly (since he was in the lead almost the entire time), it's
chrispenycate

with a decisive victory.

Congratulations, chris!

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

And how can we wait three days for an answer to that question?

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

Congratulations, Chrispy! An excellent win!

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

Congratulations Chrispenycate!

UG, the wait is already killing me. :)

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

Yes, congratulations Chris.

Imagine my surprise when I looked at the poll to find RSliwinski had also voted for my effort. Thanks RS.

And thanks to everyone who mentioned me in their lists.

As to the theme for next month, I can't wait.
