Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

It's bearly believable, isn't it?

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

Without a doubt his most influential work is:

"I Wanna Be Like You"

Now I'm the king of the swingers
Oh, the jungle VIP
I've reached the top and had to stop
And that's what botherin' me
I wanna be a man, mancub
And stroll right into town
And be just like the other men
I'm tired of monkeyin' around!

Wasn't it something to do with an advert for coffee?

If I remember correctly, he saw her in the coffee commercial and was really taken with her, happened to tell a friend about it, and the friend said, "I know her!" (or words to that effect) and offered to introduce them.

So, not stalkerish, just a fortunate series of events.

But to return to the subject of R. Kipling. You can, indeed, find many, many, many of his stories and poems at Gutenberg. If you are planning to download some of them and print them up, that would be the place to go because the selection is by far the best. But if you mean to read them online, I suggest that you take a look at Arthur's Classic Novels or Munsey's. A lot of the stories at Arthur's are Gutenberg texts, but even so, some of them are easier on the eyes for reading on the computer. And Munsey's (formerly Blackmask) has it's own texts, which are also formatted to be more comfortably read online than most of the ones you will find at Gutenberg.

Would Rikki-Tikki-Tavi be classed as one word Mods?

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

I can't recall the details, Teresa, but that's the gist of what he said in a recent (last 6 months?) radio interview in the UK. And as he's someone who seems to have been given the gift of charm, I doubt he'd have any need to stalk anyone (even if he wasn't famous).

(Not that I'm saying that apparently charming people can't be appalling under the veneer.)

As I recall, before he discovered his friend knew her, he was preparing to go to Brazil to track her down because she was the most beautiful woman he'd ever seen. Money or not, I'd call that extreme.

So I'd say it is slightly stalkerish :p

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

When I heard him tell the story on a television talk show many years ago, there was nothing about going to Brazil to find her. He may have told the story differently elsewhere, but it looks like on the radio show that Ursa heard he gave pretty much the same account six months ago.

But not a Kiplingesque story, I would say. Unless, perhaps, one put it into verse.

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

I didn't say it was the first time they met...

Ah, but you said he met his wife-to-be on the film set. If they were already married by then, your above excuse can't wriggle you out of it.

It gives me no pleasure to have to point that out.;)

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

She played the part of his wife-to-be...

Orl right, I'll come quietly - she was to be Sean Connery's wife in the film (goes back to look at original post to see if the English Language will allow me to weasel out...)

Puck of Pook's Hill is Kipling, right? I haven't read it, but it's been sitting on my shelf for so many years that I feel like I've probably absorbed its contents somehow.

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

Found a book sitting in the bookcase - "The New Oxford Book of Old English Verse". Should have some Kipling I'd assume.

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

I'm still seriously considering abstaining this month. Most of my entries are generic drudge anyway.

Argh....if only the Kipling style would be optional!!!

Hmmm... I think this calls for

SLAP!!!

Well, it ain't. So get Kipling.

EDIT: Hex -- bi-coloured = one word; bi-coloured python rock snake even if all hypenated = four. (The same goes for eg infinite-resource-and-sagacity = four words, much to my chagrin.)

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

Now I said "most" Judge, and looking back, those of mine ARE pretty generic.

My winning entry I found to be an exception. And dare I say, I did rather like my last entry.

And as far as Kipling goes I've been looking at stuff and still come up with bugger all. :p

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

That doesn't sound at all like Kipling....

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

I'm guessing most people here aren't experts on Kipling , so submitting an entry based on reading a few of his poems or short stories should suffice.

The last few Challenges have been exactly that, and pushing ourselves beyond our comfort zones has seen some exceptional entries ; I'm guessing this month will be no different.
