It may be Sammy Cahn, he of High Hopes and You Can Fly! You Can Fly! You Can Fly! fame (amongst others).

Who would name a robot after Rudolph Hess? Especially one with a personality overlay, possibly that of Hess himself? Whatever the reasoning sending him to a meeting from which he will probably never return seems somehow perfect. A great idea.

01000111 01110010 01100101 01100101 01101110 01001011 01101001 01100100 01111000 00100000 (GreenKidx) – Well, I’m rather glad this was only a 75 word story, with any more words it could have become far to emotional and reduced me to a sobbing wreck. I liked the idea, and thought it was excellently presented. To me at least I found it nebulous as to whether the central protagonist child was human or machine, and this just added to the feel of the story.

01001101 01110011 01110100 01110010 01010100 01100001 01101100 00100000 (MstrTal) – A different medium here, I think it’s the first time I have seen a script format put forward, and it certainly makes it stand out. Interlinking robots, fighting a giant robot teddy bear? That is just mad in the best possible way. Loved it. Should be a Saturday morning cartoon.

01110011 01101111 01110101 01110100 01101000 01110010 01101111 01101110 00100000 01110011 01110111 01101111 01110010 01100100 00100000 (southron sword) – Cold, remorseless and logical everything that an unstoppable killing machine should be, but southron sword somehow manages to squeeze some emotion in there as well. Nicely constructed, and I liked the idea of IT being in capitals, a machine is simply IT no gender or name necessary (or is it Information Technology run wild?)

Thanks! :)

In fact the inspiration for the story was a Saturday morning cartoon. I just decided that the overly long transformation scenes with the long-winded and drawn out dialog that accompanies it was the perfect recipe to err fix. :p

01100111 01100001 01101100 01100001 01111000 01111001 (Galaxy) – Slightly gory, but having a strong humour running deep through the tale. I can almost see the robot standing there, hearing the masters words, but not seeing the headset and taking the words as a command. Oops. They often say you should be careful what you say in front of children, obviously that applies to robots too. Excellent.

Thanks!!

Re: Discussion July 75 Word Writing Challenge

This challenge is starting to remind me of the Spider Robinson story in which the Internet showed itself in Mary's Place as a living entity, and Jake had to ask the crowd if even one of them had thought of a non-evil incarnation of machinery in response. Everyone's first impression is that of an all-knowing, all-powerful, and all-evil being, when conjuring up thoughts of sapient technology -- or robots, apparently!

My first thought ... well, I haven't had one, yet. It will undoubtedly destroy something when it arrives.

Re: Discussion July 75 Word Writing Challenge

Thank You Perp! Your review was quite flattering! And I still have the 300 worded. I might write a sequel! ;):D

My pleasure.

(Oooh a sequel, I wonder how long it is until someone does that, links the 75 to the 300, I must admit I thought about it...)

Re: Discussion July 75 Word Writing Challenge

Sorry, but we've already ruled that if there are any links between the 75 and the 300 they cannot be posted in the same month (and the 75 has to come first), because we don't want the longer 300 word story to unconsciously affect anyone's perception of the shorter story by providing a fuller picture of what is going on the 75er.

Re: Discussion July 75 Word Writing Challenge

'Spose that to keep in character I ought to grumble about Perp's commentary – didn't even notice the links to Chaucer- don't know why I bother, wouldn't you like me to open a door somewhere, one that doesn't answer back? Just to demonstrate how genuine I can be? I hate doors!

Makes perfect sense when you put it like that, Teresa. Not that I really think I would want to.

But if the urge ever should take hold of me I now know to get it and beat it to death with a bat.

Chris, forgive me I was so overwhelmed by your ode to one of the greatest creations of all time I was sucked up on a quest to find (and succeeding in doing so) the old Marvin singles that were released so many years ago, that I did not even think about looking for anything else in the piece.

It should please you to know I'm going around with Marvin on the brain and in my ears at the moment.

Re: Discussion July 75 Word Writing Challenge

Yeah, well I'm only grumbling in character, see? I wouldn't want you to think I enjoyed it. One of my reasons to be miserable (not that there aren't plenty more, some of them down my left hand side).

It doesn't think it should please me, and, face it, most of the universe agrees with it.

Why should anyone want to please me? I'll only grumble at them.
:( :(

Re: Discussion July 75 Word Writing Challenge

Yet again I have settled down to sleep and instead ended up creating an idea for a story. And then have to get up again and write said story because it wouldn't let me sleep if I didn't give it the attention it craved.

I'll leave it until tomorrow, though -- well, later today, technically. Feeling fried now, and for all I know, I could have just written gibberish (more so than usual, anyway). I shall look over it in the cold light of morning, that -- sometimes thankfully -- shows every brilliant idea created on the edge of sleep is actually just silliness. Night!

Re: Discussion July 75 Word Writing Challenge

I can sympathize with that -- I don't know how many totally brilliant ideas I have made note of in the dark of night, only to discover that it was the most ridiculous garbage in the light of day. :D

I'd settle for garbage right now, on either theme. Well, maybe not. It's not that late yet.

Just posted this, I'm pretty sure most of us will find it amusing, but it's in honour of Chris' entry

The worst thing I tend to do now is start changing my dreams into scripts even as I'm having them, thinking "This would make an awesome film!" Then I wake up and realise, "Woman, what were you thinking..."

Exactly! We're gonna have to stop having these dreams.... Of course, it doesn't help that I go to bed straight from working on a movie script. Arrrgh!

If that has been ruled, shouldn't it be stated in the rules for the writing challenges? Or did I miss it?

For this month, technically there is a short window after the 75 word voting ends and the 300 word closes. But as you stated above, it cannot be posted in the same month.

I fully agree with the reasoning behind it. As someone who considered doing that very thing this month, I would have no idea it was forbidden merely by reading the rules.
