Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

Just catching up on posts and would like to thank No One, TDZ, Perpetual Man for the honourable mentions and to the short list nomination from Parson.

Just got to read through the last dozen tales before I vote...

Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

*sob* that was horribly hard - I've just spent 5 minutes changing my mind and ticking and unticking boxes when I thought I'd already decided...

The stories I really wanted to vote for were those by Aun Doorback, SJAB, Hilarious Joke, Brev, Boneman, HareBrain and The Judge -- see, I wouldn't even have needed all eight of my votes. Hilarious Joke made me cry and Brev/ Aun Doorback made me laugh, The Judge (as mentioned earlier) gave me goosebumps, so did HareBrain (as not mentioned earlier). I loved Boneman's vision of what the picture was - clever and very sad - and SJAB's story made me think of Yevgeny Zamyatin's book We.

I also really liked the stories by Perpetual Man, Mosaix, Parson, Gary Compton and TEIN (and lots of others too but the list starts to get a bit ridiculously long so I will stop now).

In the end, after a lot of faffing and mind-changing, I voted for SJAB, HareBrain and The Judge.

I should have gone with the hat -- it would have been much less painful.

Thankyou for mentioning me. Your my hero!

So I was right after all -- that third vote was a bear. :)

Here's the shortlist, the shorter list, and the *votes* which are redundantly mentioned.
Gary Compton -- The Zeborian Matrix

Edited to add: Thanks to Spurring Platty for the vote!

Thankyou for the mention. I think I love you:eek:

Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

TJ - hah! I was wondering (re: hoping) that that little detail might go unmentioned...but seeing as I'm rumbled, I'll give my thoughts - and apologise for the momentary derailment.

Yes, I suppose there is something that I could post for the critiques and was thinking I would do so, not least because the responses I've read there often apply to the very things that drive me into endless editing loops. You know what I mean - what're they called? Oh yeah. The words.

However, I might beg leave to put my 1000th post in the GRRM threads. It's where I first started posting on the chrons and 'tis my tribal stomping grounds of sorts. Meanwhile, I'll be quaking in my boots and reviewing said material.

Probably posting less too. :D

Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

Judicial Leave is hereby granted to No One to post his 1,000th post in a GRRM thread -- provided that his 1,001 is in Critiques... Now, where did I put my talon sharpeners?

Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

68% of voters, the Judge has got. And she didn't even bother finishing her title! Sheesh.

Thanks No One for the vote. I still think your thousandth post should be in critiques, but it should be a thousand-word piece constructed from one word from each of the first thousand pages of ADWD, and it should be a summarised prediction of the major plot points of the rest of the series.

Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

With thanks for the court's leniency...I think.

And no problem HB, excellent work as ever.

As to my submission in critiques, how about I just write it all in the style of Rudyard Kipling instead? Please?

Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

I might have missed the vote on the 75-word but I got in on this one ;) And boy was it a tough decision to make. So many fantastic stories to choose from, I think you all did magnificiently but, alas, I am only allowed to pick 3.

Good luck to everyone and I look forward to seeing who wins!!!

Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

Thanks for the vote, HEX.

A lot of good stories. I need to re-read the lot again...:D then vote....

Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

SJAB -- my pleasure. I liked the bleakness, and the glass.

Gary -- I've always wanted to be a hero! Thank you. But I liked the end of your story very much: it was really clever.

Thank you TDZ and No One for the mentions -- makes me feel all warm and fuzzy :)

Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

Well, despite not having my spreadsheet, have voted. I'm not even going to try putting down my "short"list -- more stories on it than not.

Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

Fantastic standard on the 300 and really we should all pat ourselves on the back for making it so good. Having read through this morning, my votes (For what it's worth dear Judge!(Congrats and wel deserved) Goes to Southron Sword, Dusty Zebra and HareBrain) PS Recommend to all a visit to Bath and Cheddar Gorge!

Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

Dammit, 40 entries and 15 on my shortlist, which I squeezed another 4 out of! But the writing is so good, isn't it??

Firstly, thank you to Southron Sword and Talysia for the fantastic votes, which were unexpected, as I had been almost cowed by the amazing entries that preceded mine - note to self: 'do not read other people's entries before posting your own'. And thank you for mentions from others. With so many excellent entries, it's great to have been even considered.

As always, I feel bad about the stories that I've left off, but here's my shortlist and even shorter list in bold.

Aun Doorback
Starbeast
Leisha
Chrispenycate
Southron Sword
Highlander
The Dusty Zebra
Slack
Hilarious Joke
Hex
Parson
Devil's Advocate
Moonbat
The Judge
Ursa Major
Culhwch

In the end my votes went to Aun Doorback - the moment I read it, I knew it was going to be a front-runner for me, as his interpretation of the picture was unique and I'm sooo glad there are three votes for this challenge, because it would have been impossible to separate it from the other two. Which were: The Judge whose story was so wonderful in its simplicity, and Culhwch whose story really surprised me.

Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

I'm gonna need all the time to vote for this one so it will be late voting for me, and I missed the 75 last month completely so will try to add something this month, sorry guys and gals. Life is a bit empty for me at the moment.

Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

Thanks, Boneman! Thanks, also, Chris and LittleMissy, and those who have sneaked in to vote quietly.

I won't say thanks, Aun Doorback, as tempting fate is a wicked thing, but it's kind of you. (I could get used to "dear Judge"!!) And I heartily agree about Bath -- we were there only last week. The wonderful American Museum was closed for the day which was disappointing, but it means we have a reason to go back later in the year!

Sorry to hear life is empty, Allanon. Hope things improve soon.

Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

Boneman,

Thanks for including me on the "shorter list." It was a strong month for stories, but it looks as if our "dear judge" is making the greatest runaway in the history of the challenges.

Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

Thanks for putting me on the not-quite-as-short-as-the-shorter-version-of-the-short-list list, Boneman. :)

Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

I will be honest when I saw I had a vote my heart nearly stopped.

I truly did not expect one this time around and almost didn't post in response for fear it was a mistake. Either way thank you very much Chrispenycate!

Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

Just catching up...so much to do, so little time...anyway.

Huge thanks to TEiN for the vote, and for alchemist, Hex (glad it made you smile) and TDZ for the mentions..

Now, finally some time to read through the entries and sort out my own short-list.

Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

I just looked at the who voted for whom on this list and discovered that I also need to thank ChrisP and Perpetual Man for votes as well. I am so stoked! Now if her honor could just write a lousy story there might be a few more votes to go around!!!

(Actually Judge, nice job. But I just couldn't vote for a story where Lucifer was the chosen one! {shudder})
