Re: Discussion AUGUST 75 Word Writing Challenge

My shortlist:

Hex
The Spurring Platty
GreenkidX
Aun Doorback
Chrispy
Alchemist
The Judge

Hex's very clever and skilful interpretation of theme/genre almost got it, but in the end I couldn't resist the Gothic insanity of GreenkidX's story.

Re: Discussion AUGUST 75 Word Writing Challenge

I'm voting for Mouse -- as soon as I read The Soul Man I suspected I would.

:D :D Yay! Thank you!

Thanks to Star Girl and Tom for the mentions too!

I've not voted because I haven't read all the stories yet.

Re: Discussion AUGUST 75 Word Writing Challenge

Just reading through...

Ok, once I've knocked out the ones I don't understand (and I'm either particularly stupid this month, or you lot are getting cleverer) then my shortlist is:

Hex: There is nothing more horrifying to a mouse. Evil.
Star Girl: Tragic!!
Parson: Because it's funny and gross.
Cul: I read this one when you posted it, and thought of it again when I was walking the dog the other day and he started randomly barking at a tree...
Nixie: Like I said earlier in the thread, it reminds me of Robin Hobb.
Ursa: Creepyness

And I've still not voted because I can't decide between two of them at the mo.

Re: Discussion AUGUST 75 Word Writing Challenge

Some great entries, but Slack's Sunday won easily for me.

Re: Discussion AUGUST 75 Word Writing Challenge

Well golly gosh oh wow!

Just thought I'd thank Highlander for the mention, and then find Aun voted for me! So a great big thanks for that, and for the mention Highlander. Been a very, very hard day and that was an excellent way to end it.

As always the quality of writing was astounding so a shortlist is hardly fair. It has to be said that there were one or two not included here that I wanted to read a few more time just to really appreciate, but at the moment time is against me.

The Spurring Platty
Slack
Mouse
Parson
Cul
Alchemist
Stormfeather
Ursa

From the moment I read it, Spurring Platty's really stood out, and Mouse's was the only one that came close... until Ursa's. There was something about it that just spoke to me, creepy with an underlying tension, all piled together, securing my vote.

Re: Discussion AUGUST 75 Word Writing Challenge

Thank you for the mentions, Mouse and Harebrain. You say the micest things.

Re: Discussion AUGUST 75 Word Writing Challenge

Wow! Tougher than I thought. So, the initial list of 31 had to be whittled down, and I’m left with the following

HareBrain
Mosaix
Hex
Slack
Star Girl
Chrispy
Mouse
Perp Man
Quokka
Chel

In the end, the quiet, understated horror of Slack’s story really got me – as a mum, watching your kids innocently playing as a terrible death is rushing towards you . . . well, I want to go and hug the kids every time I read it (except, right now that’d wake them, and then I won’t get them back to sleep – and that’s a horror of a whole different kind!) Therefore, Slack gets my vote!

Special mentions go to Aun Doorback, Parson, Rain & TTG – mainly because I tried to keep the shortlist to 10, but I also loved these entries and wanted to acknowledge them too!

And big thanks go to LittleMissy, The Spurring Platty and Perp Man for the mentions. I'm a very happy me tonight!

Re: Discussion AUGUST 75 Word Writing Challenge

Thanks for the mentions hareBrain, TEiN and Perp.

It looks like we got ourselves a 3-way contest!

Re: Discussion AUGUST 75 Word Writing Challenge

LittleMissy, Thanks for the vote!!!

What a nice way to start my work today.

[Picture of Parson doing a jig in his desk chair!]

Happy to have made the start of your day just that little easier to face! ;)

Re: Discussion AUGUST 75 Word Writing Challenge

Parson ends the work day on a high note as well!!!

Mentions by Mouse and Perp Man, and a special note from Storm. I am really pleased by the response to my first attempt at ...... Let's see what did Mouse say? Oh yeah! "Funny and gross." :D

Re: Discussion AUGUST 75 Word Writing Challenge

Turn my back for a minute and I get another mention, thanks StormFeather

That is as good as a vote to me - Thank You!
And to Harebrain as well for the mention.

Re: Discussion AUGUST 75 Word Writing Challenge

Another great month. Wow, are writers getting better or am I getting older.

Tough call but here goes.

Honorable mentions to:

Hex
Aun
Mouse
Parson
Brev
Culhwch
and Perpetual Man

So many other worthwhile entries.

My vote goes to Slack. You touched my cold, black heart. Nicely done.
