Re: Discussion AUGUST 75 Word Writing Challenge

This horror writing has been surprising in the number of mentions I've received. I had never before tried to tell a scary story.

Sincere thanks to Starbeast for putting me on the "contest list" and Telford for the Honorable mention.

Re: Discussion AUGUST 75 Word Writing Challenge

Thank you Quokka for the Honorable Mention! I'm going to enjoy taking part in these, and voting on them too - voting is a challenge in picking favorites, but definitely a pleasure to read the entries. I'm excited to see who wins and what our next topic will be!

Re: Discussion AUGUST 75 Word Writing Challenge

Wow, thanks for all the mentions and votes. Appreciated.

Re: Discussion AUGUST 75 Word Writing Challenge

Starbeast, thanks for the mention. Glad you enjoyed it. I wasn't expecting even a mention this month so it means a lot. Ta muchly.

Re: Discussion AUGUST 75 Word Writing Challenge

Voted for No One's entry. The title struck me as a double entendre -- hinting, perhaps, at the kid's troubled psyche. Maybe I just read too much into things.

Re: Discussion AUGUST 75 Word Writing Challenge

Passing through Heber City, and found a motel with a computer. Voted (I think, because the times are weird) for harebrain, and thank you to whomever voted for me! Can't access half the stuff, and on a time limit. See you all in three weeks or so...

Re: Discussion AUGUST 75 Word Writing Challenge

Brilliant entries this month for a (ahem!) wonderfully horrific theme :)
Loved so many of them. We had several based on theatre plays, a whole bunch of kids playing, an evil kitty, a pumpkin-i-fied wife and people dancing to death toa demonic violin.

My (not so) short list

Mosaix
Hex
Oskari
Southron Sword
Paranoid Marvin
Slack
Chrispenycate
Mouse
Parson
Brev
Culhwch
Anne Martin
nixie
ThedustyZebra
Alchemist
No-one
Ursa Major
TheTomG

Then my finalists
Culhwch
Nixie
No-One
TheTomG

And my vote goes to a brilliant first entry, truly gruesome and a part of a game (reminded me (somehow) of Ian M Bank's The Player of Games) that was reminiscent of modern horror movies.

TheTomG

Re: Discussion AUGUST 75 Word Writing Challenge

Thanks for the shorterlisting, TDZ. :)

And thanks for the shortlisting, Moonbat. :)

Re: Discussion AUGUST 75 Word Writing Challenge

Thanks Moonbat, I appreciate the vote and glad you enjoyed it! And you mentioned one of my favorite Iain M. Banks books too, I am flattered!

And thanks for the shortlisting too TDZ!

Re: Discussion AUGUST 75 Word Writing Challenge

Thanks for the mentions guys , much appreciated as always!:)

Re: Discussion AUGUST 75 Word Writing Challenge

Three more mentions, many thanks to telford, Starbeast and TDZ, very much appreciated, makes me feel great on a Sunday morning!

Re: Discussion AUGUST 75 Word Writing Challenge

I could just copy/paste the last post..;) but

Thanks to Moonbat, Starbeast and telford for the mentions, bringing me a smile on a dull day.. and TDZ for a vote! 'Proper chuffed' with that..

Now to finalise my own short list...Hmmmm

Re: Discussion AUGUST 75 Word Writing Challenge

Just realised "She makes the best pies!" had a delightful second meaning to it.

Mmmm.

Thus, have voted!

Re: Discussion AUGUST 75 Word Writing Challenge

I've fallen behind in the thanking, but it's not because I haven't been paying attention! It's probably because I've been too busy dancing in the streets with a silly grin on my face.... I believe, even for an American, I am feeling quite properly "chuffed"! Is that allowed?

Thanks for the mentions, LittleMissy, TheSpurringPlatty, Moonbat, and Starbeast!

And thank you for the votes, Culhwch, Bob S. Sr., Parson and Hoopy!

I suspect Bob only thinks it's going to put him higher on the list for the next Victorian Steampunk Navajo Afghan Project, but I'll take what I can get. :D

Re: Discussion AUGUST 75 Word Writing Challenge

Another one here who's fallen behind on saying thanks (and generally being here!) thanks to my ultra-fritzy net connection of late. Bloody thing is driving me up the wall. As always, I have been reading though :)

Thanks to those who've given me a mention and most especially to Slack for the vote!

Anyway, here's my, technically, short-short list and apologies for not including the majority of stories I've noted down, but that's really because that list does represent the majority of the stories! In no particular order:

Stormfeather - Hexed
Harebrain - The Play's "the Thing"
Culhwch - The Gallow's Tree
Oskari - The Puzzle Master
TDZ - Keep'er
Hoopy - There's the Rub...
TheTomG - Untitled
Hex - Red in Tooth and Claw
The Judge - Twitter Diary: Rewind; Play; FFWD
Reiver33 -Electra Updated

And my vote goes to the story that had my favourite line in what I think was the only classical horror entry of the month - "Fruitless, I flee; the hellish scrape of limbs gains."

That'll be you Hoopy :D

Re: Discussion AUGUST 75 Word Writing Challenge

Thanks for the mentions HareBrain, TDZ and No One. I have to confess to being wholly uninspired this month and only entered to keep my attendance record up, so I'm delighted that anyone liked it enough to put it on a shortlist.

As for my list, although I liked a lot of the entries, which were as well written as ever, a number of really good stories although dealing with horrific matters didn't seem to fit into my (probably very narrow) interpretation of the horror genre, so I felt I had to exclude them on those grounds. Anyhow, my very, very shortlist:

Culhwch -- The Gallows Tree
reiver33 -- Electra, Updated
TheDustyZebra -- Keep'er
The Spurring Platty -- The Hand You Are Dealt
Ursa major -- Shortening the Working Day

My vote goes to Platty -- the story struck me when I first read it with its creepy voices and the suspense of the cards being turned.

Re: Discussion AUGUST 75 Word Writing Challenge

Brev -- thank you very much for the vote.

And thank you for the mentions, Moonbat and No One.

Like TDZ I have a big silly grin (and a certain amount of dancing too!)

Re: Discussion AUGUST 75 Word Writing Challenge

Thanks for the shortlisting, TJ. :)

(Now I must sort out my list and finally get down to voting.)
