World Fantasy convention 2013

Only saw the three already mentioned: Jo Fletcher, Arthur Machen and Michael Moorcock.

Wait, it does appear to be on the publication and newbies pages as a static ad, rather than on the rolling ad banner.

this will be my first con, what should i expect?

Beats me; my last was in 1998! :D

But everyone else says there will be a lot of drinking. From what I saw elsewhere you're too young for that, so it'll be a lot of watching drunk people. (I'll join you; I don't partake).

Oh, and it's still Jo Fletcher.

well, technically i will be 18...
but you're right i have no wish to blow my budget on booze and i'm not much of a drinker anyway, see you in the sober corner :D

who cares who's coming! of all my friends the three who share my passion for fantasy/sci fi cannot come, so don't mind me as i rampage unchecked through the venue snatching up freebies and introducing myself to anyone fool enough to lend me half a minute!

1. WFC is a "literary/professional" con, not a media event - don't expect to see anyone dressed as a Klingon!

2. The SFF convention scene is very friendly, so expect to see some very well-known authors just hanging out like normal folks (at Eastercon last year, GRRM was pottering around like any other convention-goer, not hiding in a VIP suite somewhere!)

3. Writers typically have a pretty good alcohol tolerance, so although there will be drinking, it will all be very civilised (and no-one will bat an eyelid if you're just drinking coke) :)

Basically it's like a huge weekend-long party but without the loud music (except during the disco!), where geeky folks hang out and talk about SFF. Plus there will be interviews with the guests of honour, talks, and so on.

Some bloke called Patrick Rothfuss is going to be there, apparently...:D

Joe Abercrombie and Scott Lynch are down to attend. I really want to be able to get a picture of me with these two. It will be even more awesome when I am eventually published alongside them. :D

thanks so much Anne, looks like i'll fit right in :).
disco? what disco?

Joe's great. I've never met Scott, though we have exchanged emails and he too comes across as a really nice bloke.

I'll remind you of this stated ambition at WFC, Brian...

I photographed the ARC of my first book alongside The Lies of Locke Lamora and The Blade Itself, I was so excited! Of course with my surname, my books are shelved alongside Scott's in the bookshops anyway :D

I met Scott (and Elizabeth Bear) at WorldCon last year, and they were very nice - though I nearly had a fan-girl meltdown when he said my book was on his TBR list...

I wonder if there's a pub close by where those impoverished enough not to be able to join fully, but close enough that transport to Brighton is practical, could meet up, and accept visits from those more financially fortunate? Time to design and print up the Chrons recognition T-shirt and beeper beacon…

There's always a pub nearby.

The only problem would be the schedule. I'm guessing it will be a busy few days. With perhaps only the evenings as free time. Unless you live close enough to travel home in the evening, you'll have to stay in Brighton; which I'm thinking defeats the point.

Are you going Chris?

Count me in as tentatively interested in a pub meet up for those not attending. Though what my friends would think of me gallivanting off to meet people from the Internet is another thing entirely...

Count yourself lucky. You don't have a wife to explain it to...

"But there's guys going too. There's Glitch and I,Brian and..."

Weirdly enough, those people on the internet are exactly like people in real life. :)

What rockboots and all, Brian. Any chance of a current pic of your style. I'm fascinated by your Twitter pic.:)

Me, I'm a black pants, blue shirt type of guy. Maybe that's where I'm going wrong.

I'm really tempted to come to this with Geordie rockboots, red hair, leather pants and a grand in me back pocket for drinking expenses:eek:

Also, you seem to have lost weight compared to your current avatar!

Happy days!!

Regards Gary:D

It's from one of my DJ sets - I do rock nights in the Highlands because there aren't any rock clubs. I am also becoming very good at putting on weight. :)

A lot of people were dressed for Steampunk at Eastercon and I felt embarrassingly under-dressed. Am not planning to make that mistake at WFC. :)
