You and me both SB, I'm burying my head in the sand and pretending I've already voted. No one will notice

They notice. I can feel their eyes watching us, even now.

I had to create a special list because of the amount of great tales submitted.

Damn it! I had my story all written out, with just a little more editing needed. I must have confused the poll closing date with the closing for entries date

Ouch! Don't let it get you down, there's always next time. BTW, your story is a very good drama.

Quite interesting to see your shortlist SB, quite a lot of crossover with mine, not to mention the impossibly hard whittling process to get a long shortlist.

I seem to say this every time, but the level of quality is so great throughout the challenge that a shortlist is only subjective to the individual creating it; in truth every entry is worthy of winning. The fact that I find myself saying it again does not make it any less true.

So everyone congratulations.

After that it seems quite trite to post a shortlist - so my votes go to Scott, Boneman and TJ

My long list was just that: long, and ridiculously so. However, I got it down to a short list of six that grabbed me most as a reader. The quality was amazing once more, including entries from some newcomers. An honourable mention to summer013 for a stunning descriptive piece.

My short list (which was difficult to choose from) and my votes:
Mouse - the feelings of hunger and loneliness were perfectly conveyed
Juliana - brought together by dreams, or fate? A captivating tale
Chrispy - a mini-epic: apocalypse, cannibalism, and a bleak future landscape
crystal haven - suspenseful, with a twist hidden 'til the end; I wanted more
TSP - a regular in my shortlists, and no wonder: an insult coming back to hunt
The Judge - a reaper of souls moved by devotion. So much in 300 words.
