Discussion Thread - SEVENTY-FIVE WORD WRITING CHALLENGE April 2013 -- HAREBRAIN WINS

Re: Discussion Thread - SEVENTY-FIVE WORD WRITING CHALLENGE April 2013

Hmm. Kittens, eh? For me the entries this month were much harder to choose between than usual. That's good!

My Top Ten, including **my Vote**:

springs - Great stuff: really good fun! Are you selling Astromit t-shirts?
ratsy - Highly believable - our youngest cat - Mouse - can be 'controlled' with a laser pointer, so your story felt very real! Can I be a chief?
steve12553 - Lovely unexpected seurrealism - imaginative stuff!
Parson - Another gem of a tale; I'm sure many of us have encountered Tom, or his like, out on his rounds.
DEO - Seriously, you had me thinking "Wha...what...wha..the..wha..". Nice pace, I only caught up at the end!
Perp Man - I got a really strong sense of "tall tale" from your entry; lovely storytelling.
kromanjon - This piece seems to tease the reader, playfully. Like a kitten. Very nice effect, that!
Bob Senior - You made me laugh out loud - kids, eh?
Phyrebrat - Once again, you spin some wonderful language: "...more curves than a Fibonacci spiral...". 'Nuff said.
**Culhwch** - "Old Softfoot" and "the Magpie King"? You had me by those names and didn't let go; great story too!

Well done to everyone - enjoyable reading all round!

Re: Discussion Thread - SEVENTY-FIVE WORD WRITING CHALLENGE April 2013

Thanks for the kind mentions and shortlistings Bowler, Talysia and SB.

And thankyou of course to Abernovo for the vote.

This month's challenge was a pleasure, and I really enjoyed writing my submission. The fact that others enjoyed it also is pure delight to me.

3rd place - Perp; pigeons become eagles, like it!

2nd place - The Judge; fabulous poem, brilliantly put together and would have won if not for...

1st place - Hex; who got the imagination of a cat to a tee.

Re: Discussion Thread - SEVENTY-FIVE WORD WRITING CHALLENGE April 2013

Thanks for the short listing PM.

Speaking of which:

Victoria
AMB
SB
PM
Anya
Big J
Juliana
Luiglin
Parson
Chris
MB
Bob
and TJ

I've narrowed it down to two but can't quite make up my mind yet.

Moonbat deserves a special mention though. But it needs to be said I'd never move in on Mouse's chocolate sundae. Just the 'look' when it was mentioned would have been enough to freeze me in my tracks. :)

Thanks for the short listing Johnny. I hope to have time to vote later.

Re: Discussion Thread - SEVENTY-FIVE WORD WRITING CHALLENGE April 2013

I've bit it and cast my vote. Rankings:

3rd - Talysia: lovely little tale. I really liked the child's POV and the feeling of incredulity.

2nd - Victoria: more traditional tall tale imagery, with an even larger-than-life twist.

1st - steve12553: of the four pages of entries, this one was the best fit in my mind for the two criteria: Kittens and tall tales. Your story's kitten acted realistically cat-like (based on my own long experience with felines), and I was delighted with the ending. Bravo!

Re: Discussion Thread - SEVENTY-FIVE WORD WRITING CHALLENGE April 2013

Thank you, PM :)

Re: Discussion Thread - SEVENTY-FIVE WORD WRITING CHALLENGE April 2013

Thirteen votes, so far, spread amongst 12 entries.

Is it too early to expect the need for a tie-breaker poll.

You're more than welcome, pm. :)

Honourable mentions got to:
springs, for evoking the same feelings of wonder and joy I felt when I first read of Macavity;
Moonbat, for describing a wonderful gathering, with oddly familiar characters, and
Bob Senior, for a little story that I could picture perfectly and left me laughing.

My short list had Bowler 1, with a wonderful and witty subversion of fluffiness, and Glisterspeck, with a perfect example of the classic (and humorous) style of a tall tale.

However, there could only be one and my vote went to paranoid marvin. Every time I read it, I loved this poem more and more - and I adored it from the start.

Well done to all who submitted though. There were superb pieces all round. :)

Re: Discussion Thread - SEVENTY-FIVE WORD WRITING CHALLENGE April 2013

Starbeast and Talysia thank you both for the mentions.
A contenter with Abernovo which has made my day. I don't mind losing out to PM, I almost voted for that posting as well.

Re: Discussion Thread - SEVENTY-FIVE WORD WRITING CHALLENGE April 2013

Starbeast, many thanks for the shortlisting - that's a great company to be in! Will try and vote later today.

And Greenwoody you've made my day! Thank you so much for the vote - Fugly reckons it deserves a cat treat, so I'll have to open some of those special sachets of catnip catfood!
