Here's my shortlist:

springs
fishii
Victoria Silverwolf
chrispenycate
David Evil Overlord
Femecri
TheDustyZebra
AJB
crystal haven
Mary Faerie
The Judge
Phyrebrat

The winner, though, has to be The Judge. A complete, well-rounded story that works on multiple levels - some feat in 75 words.

Lots of great stories again this month, well done all.

Standing out -

Perpetual Man, Boneman, Victoria Silverwolf, Culhwch and The Spurring Platty - for the excellent voice, tone and pace of their entries.

springs, EloiseA and TheDustyZebra - for their poetic language and inventive structure.

Ursa major, Lenny and AMB - for some clever comedy.

But, vote went to The Judge - for an excellent tale which was well constructed and contained real emotional resonance.

HB, Glen and Brev thanks for the mentions, greatly appreciated as always.

And Jastius, it is always a pleasure to write the reviews, and if it makes you feel that good then go ahead and frame it, it makes me feel good to know that it makes you all feel good!

:D

Thanks for the listing stormcrow and jastius. You've both just made my day.

I didn't have time to post when I voted, but I narrowed it down to a choice between DEO and crystal haven. David (Mr Overlord) won it on the coin toss.

Incredible entries this month, again. Every story had something special. It really wasn't easy getting even a long list, let alone a short list, so instead of a post taking up half the page, I'll make just one Honourable Mention, to Mary Faerie - first time in the challenges, and an incredible story!

Thanks so much for the kind mentions johnnyjet. stormcrow, moonbat, Glen and Brev

My shortlist

AnyaKimlin

Ursa Major

Victoria Silverwolf

chrispenycate

David Evil Overlord

TheDustyZebra

The Judge

Harebrain

A great read again this month --

48 People entered and only 31 votes so far - with only hours to go.

I should ask how DOE is doing, but he's a big lad, he can take it! ;)

Thanks for the mentions guys, I had zero comments until this last day so I am very happy to have any mentions.

Stormcrow - yes, you can feel sad at my story, it was meant to have that kind of feel

Boneman- you are most welcome for the vote and thanks for the shortlisting

Jastius - thank you so much for the runner up status that is great!

I'm not voting - up to my elbows in vomit (sick children) and other unpleasantries.

However thank you so much for all the short listings this month - I'm surprised but delighted.

jastius - Thank You for the shortlisting and your feedback; I'm really pleased!
(can't comment until after voting but will try to remember to answer your question)

ratsy - It's a job well done then!

AK - sounds unpleasant! All the best.

Well read them through whilst despatching 2 fish finger sandwiches for my tea (Oh the life I lead) - Came down to 2 in the end, Stormcrow's and Victoria Sliverwolf, both felt like larger stories in waiting and were well written and atmospheric. It was very very very close but my vote goes to Victoria

Ps not eloquently explained myself but I think the fish fingers have gone to my head!

PPS And many thanks to all who mentioned my piece in their short list? Thanks all I do really appreciate it, as like most novice writers my confidence is not high

My shortlist (well, not a real list but the ones clustered up at the top of my spreadsheet with no real means of separating them without a crowbar were:-

Luiglin, post scarcity

BetaWolf, Catwoman

RoninJedi84, Hopeful

David Evil Overlord, Genesis quest

TheDustyZebra, Sing you one, oh

alchemist, Irresponsible boy blunder

Parson, A positive sacrement

The Judge, Close POV

mosaix, Subject dear to our hearts

And I would like to thank :- Starbeast, Parson, ratsy, paranoid marvin, Moonbat, jimness and EloiseA for approving of my little verse, even if it was downbeat and cynical.

Finally, my vote went to alchemist.

Aun - Thanks for your comments: consider yourself a huge booster too!

Catching up here after my usual week beginning (No Sunday is not the last day of the week; it is the first!) and then a holiday following that. (Memorial Day, for all you non-American speakers).

Thanks to:

Perp for a top three listing.
Ratsy for a short listing.
Mary Faere for a nice review and a special mention.
Chris for a short listing.

It was nice to see those positive comments for my little story that went against the tide this month.

As ever lots of good stories, though, also as ever, more than a few I didn't understand.

My shortlist, after a good deal of nit-picky eliminating of others which only just missed out:

Boneman -- The One True Gift -- beautifully romantic
Brev -- He came from the North -- every action has an equal and opposite reaction
Culhwch -- Legacies -- the futility of wanting fame
jastius -- A Legacy of Storms -- I loved the idea of her body holding the world together
Luiglin -- You will not want -- A father's selfless love
TheDustyZebra -- We're Counting on You -- brilliantly constructed, emotionally powerful
Ursa major -- The Limits of Military Intelligence -- wonderfully ironic (NB Military Intelligence -- isn't that an oxymoron...?)

I loved all of them, but I had the rare pleasure of being able to choose the winner without a great deal of hand-wringing and cold compresses, as TDZ's story hit me when I first read it and stayed with me throughout, so she gets my vote.

And HB gets a special mention for sheer silliness.

Thanks for the mentions/short-listings Perp, Phyrebrat (and thanks for the lovely summings up, both), crystal haven, TDZ, HB, Boneman, Eloise and Chris. Phew.

And humungous thanks for your votes, Mary Faerie, jimness and Brev, and extra thanks to each of you for such lovely comments.

Aun -- fish finger sandwiches? Such class... :p (Actually, I did one better -- cold sausage sandwich for my dinner tonight!)

First off, another great month of reading. Well done all!

Also, thanks yet again to all the reviewers.

Another also, many thanks to Jimness, Dream Walker, Perpetual Man & Starbeast for their shortlistings/mentions. Much appreciated!

My shortlist below…

Luiglin – It was the image of the card being taped to the cryogenic compartment that gave this story a lot of weight with me. It left me with the sight of the daughter staring unaware at it for years, which gave that sense of time unravelling until the daughter picked up her note at some point in the future once she arrived at Nu-Earth.

Fishii – This really struck an emotional chord with me. The time and love put into making something to guide and comfort her daughter after her passing evokes emotions all over the spectrum. It makes me ponder over whether the bear itself becomes magical (or possibly filled with futuristic technology) or if it’s just the pure emotions sown into the bear that are what’s really behind the fantastical element in the story.

VictoriaSilverwolf – An epic scene bearing witness to a shocking realisation about the red planet. What made the story for me was (apart from the fine imagery) was the view of the two humans touching their helmets together amidst the sandstorms while sharing the mars-shattering knowledge.

The Splurring Platty – I really enjoyed the relaxed, human and mystical mood of this piece. The images and nuances oft he story flickered and danced in my mind like the song within the story.

After some thought, my vote went to Fishii. :)

I see that the theme, legacy, had legs. But that only made it harder to come up with my list (in which each of the categories, particularly that of the winner, is in time-of-posting order):

Honourable Mentions:
  • Rust by Victoria Silverwolf
  • Legacies by Culhwch
  • Redundant hardware will be decommissioned by Aun Doorback
  • For His Name Will Echo Through the Halls of Time by HareBrain
Runners Up:
  • We're Counting On You by TheDustyZebra
  • A Sidekick's Life For Me by alchemist
  • A Mother's Last Will and Testament by The Judge
Winner:
  • He Who Smiles Last... by mosaix

Thanks for the mention, Brev, and the shortlisting, TJ and EloiseA. :)

And just under 50 minutes to go before the poll closes....
