Not much time left and 58 entries but only 40 votes...lots of votes to change things!!

I nearly forgot the date, and I'm in a rush, so no long shortlist from me this month. Two contenders Hex and HareBrain, but my vote goes to Sleepy Dormouse who wrote the story I was thinking of writing, dammit.

Many thanks for the short listings johnnyjet, Parson and Starbeast.

That's a shortlist?

Hex Quest to the east, Quest to the west

ratsy Where the Stars go to Drink

Venusian Broon An Unexpected Plane Journey

TheDustyZebra Pop and the Question

Tywin The Leap

SleepyDormouse The Needle worker

johnnyjet A Gracious Gesture

BetaWolf Manning the divide

Parson A Miserable Evangelist

HareBrain In the Lost City of Z

Although I fanally went for the dusty Z

Karn? You've been around long enough to know not to vote for Chrispy! Who knows what excess he might get into next time? Still, thank you very much.

Starbeast, many thanks for the loyal shortlist, but

Rushes up and hugs Parson - sorry reverend, it's a sort of continental hug, think of it as primitive Christian you noticed the "autobiographical" – I wasn't sure anybody would. (The removal truck passed yesterday taking all my goods and chattels west, toward the old country).

What can I say, Chrispy? I'm a sucker for the Tolkein style.

Flabbergasted... that's all I can say.

Thank you for the two extra votes from crystal haven and The Judge.

Oops, I almost forgot this was the 28th.

I haven't had time to compile a proper shortlist. I might have voted for Chrispy's, except that my appreciation probably relies too heavily on knowledge outside the entry itself. It is, however, wonderful, and poignant. I also particularly enjoyed Tywin's.

My vote, however, goes to Victoria Silverwolf, for a note-perfect entertaining entry with a cracking last line. (I'll forgive the apostrophe being the wrong way round.)

Many thanks for the vote, Marvin! And thanks also to those who mentioned or listed mine!

My vote went to TDZ - great little story, and I loved the title. RoninJedi was a very close second.

i was pondering on that... is it normal to have less votes than submissions?
Sorry, newbie question i know.....
Of the thirty eight 75 word challenges to date, four have had more votes than enties, and one had the same. Otherwise, yes, it's more difficult to vote than submit.

Chrispy often has to remind us sternly to vote.

Me? Sweet charming friendly me, bully people?

All right, according to my list, AJB, Alex Mason, AMB, BetaWolf, Cathy M., Culhwch, EloiseA, Gary Compton, Hex, jastius, JordanSC5, Juliana, kromanjon, like the morningstar, Ursa major and Writersblock submitted but have not yet … just a mo, the judge has already voted? Are you not feeling well, your honour? Several notorious last minuters, a few new entrants who might be having difficulties mastering the poll (or perhaps just finding it), and a few without either of these excuses.

I sneaked on and voted while you were posting that :)

I voted for crystal haven -- I couldn't get her witchy story of sibling betrayal out of my head. Very clever.

(and thank you very much for the mention, Chris -- oooh and a mention from TJ, too. With mentions like that, my story can die
[*] happy.)

[*] and die it did.

I got off my eight-hour shift and got home and ate a peanut butter sandwich and put a cake in the oven and then finally had time to read all the entries in one go.

In the end, I favored SleepyDormouse for an excellent little tale. I like worldbuilding, especially creation stories (or is it re-creation in this case).

I would also like to give silver laurels to AJB and Venusian Broon for their extraordinary short tales of the ends of the earth.

And SleepyDormouse seems to have a conclusive lead of one vote - at least until someone else votes - for the first entry since … March 2011?

Just got my vote in.....for The Wise One by CrumpleHornedSnorkak. Sorry to not break the tiebreaker. I loved the last line, and the concept this short explored.

Thank you Glen for the vote, I am honored.

Thanks as well to Moonbat, Boneman, ratsy, tacticalLoco, Lenny, alchemist, and Phyrebrat for the listings, very encouraging for a new writer.

Thanks to all again for the kind words and comments if I maybe missed you, and especially to the organizers...this is a lot of fun. One vote for my first two plays at this, now my goal is to get 2!

Wow. A difficult month to pick a favourite from. It was a great theme in so far as it generated so many differing interpretations. The stories I liked best, and which for me nailed the brief best were:

BigJ - lots of ends
Victoria Silverwolf - two crazy ends
AMB - one end a bit nearer
alchemist - "on the International Space Station, hiding in the toilet"
kromanjon - two restless ends
like the morningstar - movie endings
Alex Mason - crusty end
Tywin - Misunderstood end
JordanSC5 - end and beginning
Moonbat - Ah! Yes!

I took a long time choosing but in the end voted for JordanSC5. There was a clear sci-fi element meaning it matched the genre, and something in the matter of fact tone and the comedic self-deprecation that made for a striking and moving contrast with the background tone of the end of the world.

And what an immense pleasure to see I have a couple of votes for my story too. From Perpetual Man and Victoria Silverwolf no less. Thanks indeed to both of you for your kind words, and thanks to all who reviewed and offered some feedback. I am humbled, and a little puzzled that this story is probably my biggest success to date.

Just realized this is now months in a row, I just had to thank you again! Your like my #1 fan lol, you'll definitely be getting an early preview of my book.

I know they say the ends justify the means, but there were more different types of means than I expected.

My list (in which each of the categories, particularly that of the winner, is in time-of-posting order):

Honourable Mentions:
  • Antipodes by Victoria Silverwolf
  • The Restaurant at The Ends of the World by mosaix
  • Pop and the Question by TheDustyZebra
  • Adam and Eve by JordanSC5
Runners Up:
  • An Unexpected Plane Journey by Venusian Broon
  • Alone by paranoid marvin
  • Second sight by crystal haven
Winner:
  • The Pointy End by Culhwch

Thanks to Perpetual Man for listing me with such creative 'contenders'.
And crystal haven thank you for the short listing as well.
