Discussion Thread -- SEVENTY-FIVE WORD WRITING CHALLENGE -- December 2013

The opportunity was two good to miss, with narrowed eyes Tugudjynglbawls the elf knocked his hat askew and made his way into Santa’s empty sanctum. He looked around the darkened chamber, ignoring the enticing scent of gingerbread and approached one of the toy sacks, waiting for pickup. His sneaky eyes narrowed and against all the rules he plucked a present from the top:

Anya - Ha, with faith comes trust, trust I tell you! That is faith in an authority figure, someone who is meant to be older and wiser than you, who does things, makes you do things that you really do not want to do, but the individual, be they just innocent or young, they must trust that everything will turn out for the best. I can see that so strongly in this story well captures eh?”

The elf snorted and threw the present aside almost as though it cut to close to the truth and rapidly turned his attention to another.

telford - well for every act of faith, for every belief, there is an antithesis. That might be a total lack of belief, but it can also be that moment of crisis when it fails you, as though all those things you held true to bleed away and all you are left with is nothing! Very well portrayed eh?”

Once again the helper seemed almost affronted and threw the unwrapped goody aside, the look on his face certainly not boding well for a merry christmas,

Bowler1 - What a perfect start to a story, one can but dream eh? There is much to like here I think. Not only the opening but the perceived threat in the final sentence. It’s just like my life really, faith being enforced by a seemingly benevolent figure.”

There was a noise from somewhere other than where he sat and Tugudjynglbawls, looked around nervously, but he could not stop himself, pulling another gift that was not for him from the bag and ripped it open.

Ratsy - Ha! Under strange skies a solitary explorer finds himself lost, his mechanical protection failing, doomed to die! But he still has hope, that damned faith to ask to pray for help! And he receives it! It is an excellent example of the theme!”

There was definitely a rattle at the door and the beady eyes glanced from side to side, but it did not stop the hands plucking another present.

Karn - Teamwork. It is said that the longer people work together, especially in a tight unit like the military or something they get to know one another so much better. This works as a fine example, showing that even in a moment of loss and possible despair, facing death they can still have faith in their fellows.

“Ha! They should be so lucky, I would have thought the same for me and mine, but all I get is....” The door started to creak open, and with a start the elf grabbed the pilfered sack and scarpered.

My pleasure ratsy, although it was not actually me of course ;)

(Love your current avatar by the way)

That could be me in my back yard...I should take a pic and post it later...it is sick how much snow has fallen here

but it is good fireplace/reading weather

Got mine in early this time. Hopefully it can hold a candle to what's already been posted, and what's to come.

Reviews and a storyline weaving between the comments. I don't know which had my attention more. Good job Perp.

The sleigh twisted back on itself, an arc that seemed a little too tight, but somehow with a sprinkle of fairy dust and a screech of burning reindeer hoof it made it. This was the magic of the season, this was the power of Santa, a force unlike any other, a primal thing that went back to the dawn of time, beyond technology, beyond anything dreamt of by modern man. His mobile phone rang.

As the ringtone played out Gangam style he reached into the sack and pulled another present free:

Glen - Well... Sometimes there are those moments in life when it feels as though everything is lost. It can be a personal thing, or it can be a huge thing, and I can’t imagine anything bigger than floating in a vacuum with nothing to hold onto. But strangely enough even those with nothing left to lose can still feel hope and that can come from faith, as we are shown here!”

He flicked the switch, “Yes, what is it? I am busy you know. Ho Ho Ho!” there was a moment when the big man listened, “Really? Tugudjynglbawls? Well no that is not good at all. I’d better head back as quickly as I can. I just hope it does not bugger up my deliveries, that is all....” He broke the connection and took a moment to pull another present free.

Brev - A show of faith is a moment of trust between two peoples. But in these moment who knows just what is what to one another. I mean to one species the idea of being eaten is abhorrent and a major affront. To another it could be a show of profound horror. And people are surprised when things don’t work out...”

Santa slammed Rudolph into high gear and as the possible cybernetic creature blasted away in a warp drive effect* the jolly, red clad man took a moment to deliver one more gift -

RoninJedi84 - Well, well, well a very clever idea here. Something that takes the idea of faith and turns it on its head. Where the very act of creation can only happen because the creator has faith that it will work, while those that work for him doubt. Really quite brilliant. Reminds me of me I suppose. Ho ho ho...”

And with a roar like reality cracking he was gone, heading due North...

Thanks Bowler & SB, it's a good feeling to see these responses. Makes me feel all warm and tingly inside :D

Cool. The back of my head is tingling from a low-carb energy drink. I just submitted my tale. Now I can thoroughly read all of the entries, and enjoy your colorful comments.

I hope to see others comment as well. The more the merrier.

Faith/Sci-Fi

Springs - Delightful story that blossoms with childhood harmless fantasy. It's heart-warming to fill a child's mind with fun make-believe characters, it rekindles that kid inside the adult yarn-spinner.

Boneman - Talk about an unexpected side-effect from a new drug. One individual excells from the dosage into an amazing being that wants rule over the new colony from Earth. Awesome tale.

Mith - The immortal Saint Nick wants a droid-deer to pull his sleigh. Marvelous idea! Think of all the fancy upgrades you can add, everything from turbine engines to a hot chocolate dispenser. Cool.

BetaWolf - A celestial being that roamed a quiet planet, now has visitors who arrived that want to settle there. This science fiction story leaves me wanting much more. I must know, what happens next!

Martin321 - Whoa-ho! This is a great tale of a smooth talking con man who dupes a person out of their money, with a "no return" catch. Yikes! Shocking and funny at the same time. Nice to meet you.

AnyaKimlin - A father and daughter drama that pulls at the hearth-strings of emotion. It's always tough to begin again somewhere far away from familiar surroundings and those you love. Good stuff.

Telford - Stellar action with mega intensity that moves you to the edge of your seat, and tests your faith to the ultimate limits. Tremendous imagery abounds in this space story. Nice to see you here Telford.

Bowler1 - A sweet offering that reads like a science fiction tale from a classic pulp magazine of yesteryear. Charming, and makes you feel toasty inside. Wonderfully written for the season of X-Mas.

Ratsy - I love these astro pilot in trouble stories. And this one is highly intense too! Fear grips your spine as you hope the situation will work out for the victim in need of help. Spectacular entry.

Karn Maeshalanadae - There is no greater hero, than a person who gives their life for another. Very sad, but an astounding tale of nobility that made my heart pound with emotion. Good stuff.

Glen - Another powerful science fiction story of an astronaut in trouble. Exceedingly taunt and makes you want to cheer for the brave pilot who tries to survive with courage and faith. Very cool.

Brev - Humankind's first encounter with an extraterrestrial race (that are quite different looking than Earth people), doesn't go well. We realize to our horror that we're on thier menu. Appetizer, anyone?

WooHoo, more reviews.

Starbeast looks at bowler1 and asks, 'where did you get that strobe light on your head?'
'What light?'
'Rays light?'
Bowler1 points, 'look, over there....'
Starbeast just stares at bowler1.
Bowler1 runs off... 'Its mine, I'm keeping it.'
