Discussion Thread -- SEVENTY-FIVE WORD WRITING CHALLENGE -- December 2013

Reddsmelibuum and Nikkurniccer looked at one another. Both were dressed in green with bells and they looked worried. It was unusual for their boss to break off during his run and head home. Everything was planned out perfectly. And it was all down to the rogue elf: Tugudjynglbawls. Honestly by stealing a sack of toys he could ruin Christmas. Almost instinctively one of them reached up and began to wrap a present. No matter what happened work never ended:

Remedy - Oh Thomas. This was meant for Thomas but that is one little soul that will not be having a Christmas this year. It is a sad thing when one so young feels that there is nothing left but to follow his father and mother into an end. But... Is it an end? Perhaps there is more to it, perhaps they went somewhere else, and no matter what it was, his trust in his parents took him where he wanted to go...”

He shrugged and took another present of the shelf and began to put it into an empty sack, he checked it all the same and chatted on with his fellow.

Mischov - How did this get in here? It was made by that elf who did a runner, decided that trying to make a living, a life away from here would be better than this perfection! I mean I wonder what on Earth he could be believing if he thought that was possible. Still I’m sure he is happy in his own way....”

The two elves looked at one another as a red light began to flash. Santa was approaching. Nikkurniccer grabbed one more present and began to wrap, but whistled as he caught sight of it.

Juliana - Sometimes there is faith in what you are doing, that it is the right thing, eh? Like fighting in a bitter war, where everyone dies but both armies kept on fighting. But from that there come admiration for ones foes, until in the end it is just one on one, and trust becomes faith in the most unlikeliest of places...”

As the sleigh decelerated into the landing bay the two figures put aside the presents and headed toward the man they called boss, “Not going to be any time this year,” Nikkurniccer sighed, Won’t be able to watch that film you like, you know the one that’s on every years.” Reddsmelibuum shrugged,

SB - It’s a wonderful life? It’s a great movie, it’s what Christmas should be all about and a reminder of all the good things. The funny thing is, every time you watch it you see something else, that everyone has some intrinsic goodness inside them and all it takes is learning just what leverage it takes to get the job done. As long as you do the right thing it will work out in the end...”

Santa leapt of the sleigh, and the elves watch him stride toward them. For someone who was often described as jolly, he was doing his best to dispel the stereotype. For a moment they did their best to distract themselves, talking about one last gift as the space between them narrowed.

BigJ - Sometimes I wonder whether blind devotion is to much of a thing, you know? I mean unquestioning fanaticism can be a good thing, it is a driving force unlike any other. Bring victory after victory with no matter what the cost to those that face you. Does that make you special? Insane? It does not matter because everyone else is left trampled underfoot.”

Heart-felt thanks to Perp, Beasty and Victoria. Boy, what a month ,,, so far.

Just posted - and, killing two birds with one stone, it's my 8,000th post......:)

Thank you Perp Man! I'm enjoying your progressing Christmas tale. :)

Congratulations Pyan :D

Pyan! Where's the darned "like" button, anyway? :D

Oh, and congratulations on 8000! Very impressive. And you cheat.

Tugudjynglbawls new that he was in trouble, and that he had gone to far. At the same time he was surprised to find that he just did not seem to care. He pushed through the door of the workshop and out into the cold of the North Pole beyond dragging the sack of toys behind him. The biting cold hit him hard, and he knew it would take a few moments for his body to adjust. So he stood there, huddled against the wall and opened another present.

Perp - what is that sawed off little writing now? It’s meant to be happy, happy Christmas time!”

His hands seemed to swell, not enough to stop him opening another.

Victoria - Change and ritual are things that I have a great understanding of, and although sometimes they are bad they can be helpful, in a world where all the men are gone, perhaps ritual keeps the faith that they will return. While there is life there is hope. Huh, like the innocent, young voice too. Don’t know the last time I felt innocent.”

The hairs on the back of his arms grew thicker, lighter, whiter... He heard shouts from the workshop, but needed a few seconds more. Another present provided distraction.

monsterchic - Seems to ,me that the truth is a little bigger than the story sometimes. A possible savior child dying of cancer shows a dark faith in doctors words, but there is a greater hope and believing in undefined promises is a greater one. But that, once again is hope...”

As his spine curved and his pupils dilated into jet black he risked one more present,

pyan - Obviously the people in this story are using a system based on our own, but it is the play on words that really makes it something special. Not only does it work well, the acronym reads perfectly and there is the double meaning to the word faith. It amused me even in this situation.”

It was not an elf that ran off into the arctic landscape, but the lolloping gait of a full grown polar bear....

Thanks to all for the comments, the reviews, and the insults......:D

Thanks for the review, SB. :)

You're welcome Karn.

Thanks for the review, Starbeast!

You're welcome RoninJedi84.

Thank you Starbeast! I always enjoy your reviews. :)

You're welcome, and thank you Juliana.

Starbeast -- A familiar tradition of the holiday season is twisted into shapes beyond imagining and offered as a lighthearted, tongue-in-cheek gift.

Thank you for your review Victoria. I did get twisted once again in December for a story, but I went for humor instead of horror (like last year).

Thank you, StarBeast, for your review. Wasn't sure how that one would go over.

You're welome BetaWolf. I think you did the right thing writing a story that is completely different and unexpected.

Thank you for the reviews SB and Victoria, as always greatly appreciated.

(And sorry SB!)

You're welome Perpetual Man. No need to apologize for your intense drama, I thought it was awesome. You are among a multitude of highly unique tales this month.

Thank you Starbeast, I really appreciate you taking the time to review my entry, very kind words :) (my entry was perhaps a bit too sad for this festive time of year)

You're welcome Remedy. I think you did great, you created something entertaining and stimulated reaction. Drama seems to be the usual element in many stories written for these challenges, and were among others who did the same.

I almost went for an intense drama myself.

Thanks Perp, Starbeast and Victoria - yet again you've managed to make my story sound interesting :)

You're welcome AnyaKimlin. And your tale is very interesting, so be sure to pat yourself on the back.

RE SB: The pleasure is all mine.. :) RE Victoria: "Unusual"? Good! Thank you both for your reviews and kind words.

You're very welcome Mischov.

Thank you for your review Perpetual Man. It's like an insightful documentary about the movie itself.

Heart-felt thanks to Perp, Beasty and Victoria. Boy, what a month ,,, so far.

You are immensely welcome Telford. I agree, it's been a wild month, with outstanding stories.

Faith/Sci-Fi
(part three)

Victoria Silverwolf - You've written a unique tale which is a superbly crafted narration by a simple minded young girl who (among the multitude of women), await the hopeful arrival of men to renew life. Good stuff.

Monsterchic - Fantastic offering highlighting a very special individual that will save worlds. But this great person is ill. Can he be cured? Will he be able to save people from both planets? Excellent cliffhanger. Nice to see you here.

Pyan - Heh heh. The last line in your mighty story really sinks it's teeth into the reader, by spotlighting your interpretation of this month's challenge. Well done sir.

Tywin -- This sad and gentle story of hope shows us the personal side of great voyages of exploration.

Mr Orange -- Through the device of a lyrical poem from an imagined culture, the author allows us to understand the narrator's doubts and regrets.

Thanks for the reviews :)

Nice to be back, Starbeast!

You're welcome Monsterchic.

Faith/Sci-Fi
(part four)

Bedlamite - Astounding dialogue highlights this intense tale where an alien invasion moves people to ask God for help in a time of supreme crisis. A great situation where everyone is defined by their belief.

Tywin - Touching story of a man who wishes to recieve any message from those he loves. It's emotionally moving to understand his longing for family contact, and sense the strength of his patience. Good stuff.

Mr Orange - We are dazzled by this powerful entry, which is filled with poetry of faith, nightmares of planetary genocide and the regretful feelings from the oppressors. Tremendously dramatic offering.
