Discussion Thread -- SEVENTY-FIVE WORD WRITING CHALLENGE -- December 2013

Santa leapt off his sleigh, shiny black boots sprinkling snow in all directions. He had barely landed and already the hanger was a hive of activity. It might have been an emergency that brought him back, but that did not seem to stop everyone congregating upon him like bees to a big red pot of honey. Honestly, they would have coped if he had not been forced home.

He accepted the mug of hot chocolate though, and took checked over a present with a perceived fault.

Bedlamite - It is a funny old thing, faith. I mean you can trust it as far as you want, but sometimes it can turn on you and destroy all you believe. But these are the times when you should trust it most, when believers give in to despair, and the unbelievers believe. Just hold onto faith when things are at their worst and who knows you might just get rewarded.”

He frowned as he thrust the present back into open hands. There was nothing wrong with it. Sometimes the elves worried about nothing! The thing they should have been worrying about was getting away. With a sack of toys no less!

He reached the door and found a present dropped as Tugudjynglbawls had made his escape, just one little present all on it’s own. Insignificant it may have seemed but then, every present was special.

Tywin - Faith and love go together very well and can be entwined in so many ways. Whether it is the love of a good woman, a family member or friend, it can give the heart a bedrock of faith that is hard to be shaken. A letter must come, and despite everything screaming that it will not, that hope, that faith that it will is enough to give anyone the strength to keep going.”

Reddsmelibuum pulled the door open and they all stared out into the winter wasteland beyond. Snow blew in sheets across a landscape of ice and drifts. A single piece of wrapping paper blew across the world, twisting and turning in the jaws of the storm, but with supernatural speed Santa plucked it from the air. It had once held a present. The name was enough, he knew what it had been...

Mr Orange - When viewed by an outsider another’s beliefs might seem strange, could either seem threatening, but nothing more than superstition. This of course is a mistake. All those boys and girls that don’t believe in me get no presents. And this ably shows that. A faith that might look dark and able to incite others to violence may well be a good thing to remove. Unless of course there is truth in the belief and in the act of removing a threat you actually release a more real one....”

It was something that was often missed, the big man realised as he looked out into the snow, the true nature of the magic that he possessed. Oh everyone knew that there was some magic involved, that particular one that everyone thought about – going around the world in one night delivering all the presents to the worthy girls and boys – but there was so much more. He looked at the opened present in his had. It sparkled with a light of its own, and then it was something different. For someone different.

Chris – A rather thought provoking tale that makes me seem so much bigger and more important than I am in the scheme of things. Perhaps. It is still wonderful to be seen for the first time by those who might not understand my nature, but just by spreading my name the magic I am spreads. Across worlds and minds. Sedition indeed.”

The present seemed to dissolve in his hands and then Santa stomped off into the blizzard, following footprints that only he could see….

Am having a few problems controlling the colours... many apologies for the lack of red!

chrispenycate -- The power of belief and disbelief is demonstrated in this surreal and chilling study of the nature of reality.

johnnyjet -- Advanced technology is viewed as a possible source of miracles in this convincing slice of life from the future.

Parson -- Kierkegaard's famous metaphoric "leap of faith" is here made literal, enabling the reader to better understand this timeless philosophical question.

David Evil Overlord -- This sly twist on the creations of a famous writer forces us to wonder why we believe what we believe, and to question how free our minds really are.

Culhwch -- By showing us the consequences of blind pride and unquestioning belief, the author shows us the dangers of faith without reason.

Abernovo -- The unimaginable experiences of journeying beyond Earth are made vividly real through simple gestures of humanity.

Phyrebrat -- Through the use of characters utterly inhuman in appearance, the author points out the common emotions of all sentient beings.

Thanks for the lovely review, Victoria. :)

Victoria, Thanks for the review which makes me sound ever so much more erudite than what I really am.

If anyone ever doubted the educational level of this site your siting of Kierkegaard "Kierkegaard's famous metaphoric "leap of faith" is here made literal" should set them straight.

Nikkurniccer turned to Reddsmelibuum, the image of Santa disappearing into the snow still emblazoned in his mind like a star. I don't understand, he said, What's the fuss all about, it's only one bag of presents, it's not as if we can't replace them in a tick! Almost as if he was trying to prove his point he plucked one from the shelf, half wrapped...

"johnnyjet - It's to do with belief, which is as much part of faith as is superstition. When you have one little thing that is keeping hope alive, it is very easy to look beyond the restrictions and accept what is in the here and now. The superstition is not looking at the truth, keeping tomorrow at bay in this case."

So you are saying that if one little thing is changed, the whole magic of Christmas could... end? Reddsmelibum shrugged and took another present from the shelf.

"Parson - Sometimes another aspect might enter the equation and that would be desperation. When all else is gone and only desolation remains, a glimmer of hope might lead to faith. Something that would not be tried in normal circumstances becomes road to salvation. Belief, faith bolstered by need can lead to something better - even more so if you have another faith in something greater that can hold your hand.”

Riiiight, so things can only get better when you are prepared to take a leap into the unknown, especially when things are really bad. But they can be helped when you believe that there is something greater to hold ones hand. Like us?

DEO - Of course, it is better than having faith enforced. Just imagine what it would be like to be some kind of machine who finds some level of freedom, perhaps even free thought and having it all crushed, by strictures and rules implanted within, stripping away true free will leaving only the semblance of such, straightjacket by the rules of others.”

But that could be considered for the best surely? I mean it is something that could again be applied to us. Surely having no trust in a higher being, no faith might be for the best. If you believe in something that is not there can it not fail?

Cul - Ah yes, but it can give you strength to fight when everything is against you, it can give you love, hope and life. It is the biggest, most wonderful thing in the whole of reality. Only a nihilist has no real faith and that is so sad. Even when a mightier force moves to crush another, one that hung on by their finger nails against all the odds because they believed they might win, that mightier power still acts on faith, even though they might deny it. Their belief that they will destroy the weaker might be as big a flaw as the others...”

Nikkurniccer sighed, this is getting far too serious for me, I know, I know I started it, but it is making my ears twitch and my brain hurt. Reddsmelibuum chuckled,

Aber - well let’s lighten things shall we. We exist, all of it, this magic is for children, the world over, all the worlds in fact. It is the wonder of sleigh-bells in the snow, the belief that reindeer can fly, but the magic is more complex that that, their is a compact between us and parents, together we keep the magic alive. In doing things to help their children believe they create smiles, that ripple across the world, strengthen the faith in one another, in all the positives...

Phyre - Even when faith seems cruel, capricious and lost it can still be restored by something as simple as a single snowflake can turn a lie into a song of light and truth, restore belief and wonder into the heaviest of hearts.”

So basically you are saying don’t rock the boat, rejoice in what you have and what you believe and you will be happy.

Luiglin - of course. As long as you are able to believe in the good, reject the bad, you might be able to use both for your own benefit, and in doing so you can touch others and bring enjoyment and wonder. Like an invisible man you can walk between them, spreading magic to the old and young alike. If you can see both and keep them apart, avoid them clashing like a war of the worlds then who knows what is possible.”

I never knew you were this deep. You are something of a philosopher my friend, I think I have learned a lot, and been made to think. I wonder how the Boss is doing out there?
Reddsmelibuum shrugged, “Who knows? I have faith that it will all turn out for the best.”

Perp

Thanks for the review. Lovely as always and your creativity in writing that story astounds!

Thanks for the cool review, Starbeast. :)

You're welcome David. Stay frosty Evil Overlord.

Thanks for the review, Starbeast!

You're welcome Culhwch.

Faith/Sci-Fi
(part seven)

Phyrebrat - Once again my heart is enveloped into a science fiction drama, that brings forth a tear to my eye, and a lump to my throat. You've written a delicate story that is very sad, but very tender as well. Good stuff.

Luiglin - Wonderfully crafted and narrated tale, which is told by my all time favorite sci-fi author H. G. Wells, at the age of eight. This was a great surprise for me, I knew there was something familiar about the dreams and nightmares you've illustrated. Excellent.

Tinkerdan - Fantastic ghostly story set in the near future. A message written in a stoney epitaph, rings out clearly with the loving faith for a magnificant wife. Dramatically beautiful. Nice to meet you, and keep up the good work.

Luiglin -- This moody and mysterious tale reminds us that the events of the future depend on our actions in the present.

tinkerdan -- The author offers us a futuristic ghost story, while creating a rich back story through a few words.

Mirannan -- A story full of ironic twists and turns, which makes the reader look at the concept of faith in unexpected ways.

alchemist -- The author present a cynical view of human credibility, forcing us to wonder how easily we can be fooled.

Thanks Victoria. As always you make it sound so good. If your review were a movie trailer I'd be so excited going to the main event that I'd end up disapointed

Faith/Sci-Fi
(part eight)

Mirannan - A true shock to the system story, where belief in Christ is set up by those who want to be sure that "faith" is embedded into minds and hearts. Don't worry Mirannan, you've captured this month's theme very well.

Alchemist - Ho Ho Ho. Santa will definately come to town, and YOU will believe in him, for the price of only, $199.oo. Ah yes, the wonders of science, a litte tinkering with the mind and presto! Heh heh heh. Diabolical, but cool.

Bob Senior - Extraordinary science fiction tale of a war robot that was waiting to be repaired to go back into action. I'd love to see what happens next when H.A.R.I.-269X is up and running again. Awesome story.
