Discussion -- August 2014 75-Word Writing Challenge

Thanks for the reassurances, @springs, @Remedy, but now I understand the "gray area" - my pre-poll post (or at least part of it) should have been a post-poll post. Got it. :)

I don't see anything in your pre-poll post that was even in the grey area -- it's still very much in line with discussions we used to have, which are what we're aiming to get back to, so I think you were just fine. People did name current favorites back in the old days. The grey (and black) area is about what one can say about one's OWN story before the voting is done -- and you didn't have a story. :)

Evening J Sun, does this mean you will participate next month.

Well, I can't say for sure - I meant to this time but it didn't work out and I mean to next month, so we'll see.

Okay - I'll stop worrying about it then. :)

Yup, you can say anything you like about anyone else's story, as long as it's not mean or critical. We only play nice in the Challenges. :D

Lenny,

Thanks for the shorter listing. It is much appreciated.

(Could it be that the like button is off on this thread because it is also off on the 75 Word post thread? If I remember correctly the idea there was not to influence the voting and I would not be surprised that turning it off in one part of a sub forum would turn it off in the entire sub-forum.)

Great stories everyone. I have my longlist, shortlist, and *vote*. In order of submission:

· Razorlips

· Untitled (VALIS13)

· Jimmy

· Your Heart Belongs To Me

· The Judgment of the Innocent

· A Ship By Any Other Name

· Psychopathic Perspective

· CSI: New Earth

· *Be the Serpent Under’t*

My vote went to Wordspinnner for a wonderfully chilling story. I live in fear of the blue screen!
Thanks Void! You are my first vote ever :)
Being an IT professional, I couldn't resist including the dreadful BSOD.

Thanks for the mention. Alchemist. Thank you, Lenny and WordSpinner for putting me on your shortlist. And a ginormous thanks for the vote, martin321! :)

Thank you for the shortlisting Alc and the mention telford! I'm going to read em now and see what's what and who I can vote for*.

pH
(*briberies to be sent in the form of a fully functional Pod Racer - preferably Teemto Pagalies' - to Walthamstow, London. Failing that, I'll accept a Battlestar in orbit.)

My final set of reviews before my vote.

TheEndIsNigh: Does the act of following orders make one guilty or innocent? This is a question asked throughout time and one that ambiguous in nature. writer leaves this tale open ended.

Robert Mackay: a beautiful love story I imagine the people in hour avatar to be acting this scene out. I look forward to reading more. Starbeast: fun story of human abduction and how bodily functions are hilarious. Especially to this immature reader.

BigJ: A stark reminder that war is hell and that people can be considered enemies by association.

Reiver33: bleak story of revenge, earths last surviours have to make a difficult choice, horrowing story well structured.

Parson: War crimes and alzheimers, does mental deteration make one less guilty of their crimes? A tale of conflict within conflict here touches a nerve.

DEO: interesting tale with maths, I dont like maths as a rule but in this story it works well. HareBrain: Built to kill therefore innocent this beast is terrifying. At the end of this tale we are left if a feeling of helplessness.

TDZ: This made me smile, thd idea of trading bodies so something that can not see the wider world is amusing and had the scope for many adventures.

Chrispenycate: Tale of caution too much change in a short period can be harmful. The final two lines sum up modern life incredibly well.

The Judge: I think it is safe to say humans would smush innocent beings if they got in the way of expansion. Just as the Dodo.

Holland: Nice anthem for the lost. Culhwch: sacrifice billions to save billions the writer creates quite the pickle here.

Ursa major: The first mention of Sky•Net brilliant blaming of Murdoch and the omnipresent nature of the internet in modern life.

I loved every one of the entries this month. I can never get enough of peaceful civilizations getting destroyed in creative ways :)

That said, here are the ones that stuck with me:
Victoria – Jimmy ---- VOTE

Alchemist – You Have Been Judged

Groot – Found

Phyrebat- Larry’s Retirement Gift

Perp – Psychopathic Perspective

TDZ – Be the Serpent Under’t

Anyone else not liking the new polls, btw? Can they be tinkered with (overtime, I can understand they're not a prioritu) or are we stuck with them? They're harder to read who's doing what without the colour band and harder to see who voted for who.

I don't like the polls here, either. In addition to all the things you don't like about them, I don't see any way to find out how many people have voted (aside from counting the votes).

I also don't like the new polls :( hard to see who has voted for what and how many votes they have at a glance.

I haver to admit I just didn't understand some of the entries this month.

My short list: Hoopy, Martin321, Lenny and TDZ.

And the vote goes to Hoopy.

Hi Teresa:

It is possible with a bit of reverse percentage math. currently 21

The first entry has 3 votes @14.3%

100/14.3*3=20.9 = 21 votes

I also don't like the new polls :( hard to see who has voted for what and how many votes they have at a glance.

Maybe things have changed, but it does say number of votes against each entry + click on that number and a list of votes appears
