Discussion Thread - 100 Word Anon Writing Challenge for December 2014

Hey Robert, after some heavy meditation I think I can accept your theme...haha. Did I say meditation? I meant medication..okay not that that's settled it is an original theme with some cool entries all ready.

I can't wait to see what theme you come up with next month ;)

Robert's theme is a definite challenge (was a challenge? ). 5 stories already, and a very eclectic mix of interpretations. This should be quite the competition.

"Beauty in My Eye" -- The author takes a wry look at the pretensions of modern art (with, perhaps, a sly dig at a noted Spanish surrealist.)

"Band on the Run" -- This jazzy, fast-moving comedy of clashing cultures offers the reader a pleasant sense of dizziness.

"Space Cuckoo" -- With great imagination, the author blends past and future into a playfully bittersweet whole.

"Loving, Labouring . . . Losing" -- This elegant little fable reminds us that one must keep a proper balance among heart, mind, and body.

"Work's Wage's Won" -- The eternal struggle between art and commerce is depicted in this sensual tale.

"The Play's the Thing" -- With a great sense of empathy, the author raises profound questions about the nature of humanity.

"To Be, or Not to Be" -- This historical fantasy celebrates the human spirit when faced with challanges.

"Abiogenesis and the Redemption of the Lost" -- With elegance and grace, the author creates an erudite poem in a classic form which celebrates the new.

"Choice Words" -- The importance of making the correct decision is powerfully conveyed in this tale of war and peace.

Wait a minute...wouldn't farntfar know who wrote these??? :) (For the record, I am just pretending! :))

It's not a challenge without Victoria's reviews, thank you from me, as well!

And wonderful stories everyone...uh, anyone?? Looks like we're building a tradition here...long may the 100 worder stand!! :)

Well Mosaix, since we're on Shakespeare for this month: "To be, or not to be..." in the challenge, already. "That is the question." :D

Anyhoo, I do need to get my act together in general; in November I not only missed both entering and voting in the 100 challenge, but I also forgot to vote in the 75 challenge. (Shhh, don't tell Bowler. I fear that ray gun of his!)

Forgive me, I am an inveterate tweaker, and I had a small suggestion about the nascent, and still coalescing rules for the 100 worder; in reference to the disqualifying of a story for being over word count: I think we'd all hate to see anyone eliminated because of word count in this informal, for-fun challenge. My thought was, since the stories won't be posted until the challenge's host does so, maybe instead of giving any word-count offender 1 hour to correct their overage, we could give them one day; they would not have gained any advantage by having the extra words in their story posted, since it won't have been on display. I fear that if someone is, say, at work when a host's PM goes out to inform them of their word-count issue, they may not see the PM until it's too late to correct the error. Just a thought, and I promise no more suggestions for a long time! :) CC

As you know, Cat's, the one hour rule was put in place to correspond more or less to the rules for the other challenges. But I thought of this problem myself when I was asked to do the postings, although in my mind the question was going to arise principally because of time zones.(**)
Someone in Australia sends me a PM while I am asleep and I disqualify it when he/she is asleep. But the question of one or other of us being at work is a reasonable one too.
So two points.
As the poster, it's seemed to me that I have a certain discression as to when I highlight the word count problem to the author, and so I will try to PM them when I think they won't be asleep, at which point I assume the hour counts from when I send the problem to them, not when they originally sent the entry. (Please take note of this Moderation, if and when I am auditted later :)).
Secondly; TDZ, as my friendly neighbourhood moderator, has kindly offered to help out with executive permissions if ever the need arises.
The one case of exceeding the wordcount that we have had so far during this challenge was actually solved by an exchange of PMs between me and the author in about ten minutes.
Specifying a firm editing period of a day may actually be more difficult to control than the hour's grace currently in place, but with a little good will and common sense all round I think your problem is not going to be an issue.

Then again, if other people think that a day's grace is more sensible, I certainly won't object. (Especially as by the time the rules are changed it will plobably be someone else's problem. ;))

(**) PS It was clear when I brought it up that Mosaix and TDZ (et al) had a solution already in mind.

I just gave the poster one chance to amend and didn't set a time limit - the hour on the majn challenge is due tk the site's timeout which doesn't apply here and if you ask for a mod check in thr challenges there is no time limit.

As the lovely springs says, we have the one hour edit window in the other challenges because that's what the software allows and once the editing window is past, no one can amend their entries (even those of us who technically can amend our entries). Here, I guess it's tricksier because people can't amend their own (or not without blowing their anonymity completely) so there's a longer trail of communication between writer and poster.

Being sensible about how it all works seems like a good plan to me -- especially since this is an informal challenge and Robert always wins in any case.

As CC says, this one is for fun, and I think that should be the emphasis. Can I suggest that we just leave this up to the discretion of volunteer, whoever that happens to be from month to month? All friends here - although I may have to rethink this if Robert wins again. :)

Thank you all for responding! I am such a trouble maker! Another thing to be thankful for at the Chrons is that sensible heads will always rule the day; I shall no longer worry about that dread spectre, The Ghost of Word-Count Eliminations!

Apologies, farntfar, you are running such a clean, efficient challenge, and I added complications! I promise I will volunteer to host a 100 worder in the first quarter of the new year, so please save a bunch of odd questions and suggestions for me, everyone! :)

Ha! Springs. You are correct as ever. (Furthermore everyone seems to agree with you)
I've done my usual thing, both at and away from work, of making things far more complicated than they need to be.
So if an entry exceeds the word count, the author gets informed and the chance to reenter it after editing.
No time limits, but just one correction.

What was it I said about awe earlier? It's redoubled. :)
