DISCUSSION -- June 2015 75-word Writing Challenge

Wowsers, what a feast, a cornucopia of quality literature. As they say in Carousel, June is Bustin' Out All Over!

I've got a flight to catch soon, so what better excuse than that to kick back with a G&T and re-read all 58 gems before coming up with one most worthy of a vote?

I could have done with a lot more votes :(
So I particularly enjoyed stories from: Telford, TitaniumTi, Glen, Jo Zebedee, Void, Littlestar, ratsy, Holland, Warren_Paul, TDZ. (order of entry)

vote goes to: Remedy, really like the idea and it made me smile, neat :)

Thank you Warren_Paul for the mention and Victoria thank you for the vote! Am in shock .

Many thanks to Moonbat for the short(er) mention and to marmalade for the mention. Never expected so always a treat.

I notice only 7 people have cast their votes so far - with so many entries there's a distinct possibility of a tie on this month.

What happens in the event of a tie? Could there be a write-off? Or a write to the death? Write club? I'm excited!

A fight to the death in a Star Trek arena?

The answer is a tie-break vote - if you go to 'The Seventy-Five Word Writing Challenge Roll of Honour and go down a bit you will see all the winning entries, and when ther was a tie, the equal firsts until penalty shoots. It's a not uncommon occurrence.

Oh, dear, not romantic enough? Should I have come down for fountain pens at fifteen paces?

One problem with 50 plus entries is that there are too many worthy candidates. My short list could have been much, much longer, and I so wanted 2 votes!

Chrispenycate: "Colony" -- An unwanted entrance can feel like a jail door.
Tim James: "Hello, I Must Be Going" -- Mentioned for sheer cleverness
Jo Zebedee: "I'll Wait Very Hard" -- Brought tears to my eyes because I remembered last month's story.
Michael Coorlim: "Re-Arrival" -- Massively humorous.
Juliana: "Till Death Do us Part" -- This entrance was the final exit.
Paul_S: "The Wordsmith" -- Let's us see that Prophecy is the first entrance to terror.
Justius: "Second Star to the Right and Strait on till Morning" -- Heart rending sacrifice. This could be a Christian parable.
Phyrebrat: "Blessed Matricide" -- Shows how some entrances are horrible endings for new beginnings.
Grimward: "Habringer's Chords" -- poetic ode to the sunrise. (Is this an arrow pointing to the sunrise, like "Mouse's" long ago mouse picture?)

The two that jumped on me were Jo Zebedee's heart rending part II story, and Justius' story of sacrifice. In the end I voted for Justius.

Awesome stories as usual. Without further ado:

Favourites:

Tim James
- Hello I Must Be Going (clever play with the structure)
holland - Here Comes the Sun (a man's everyday is an alien's wonder)
Kerry Buchanan - Bittersweet (oh, the lost time)
Sancho - It lies in the lap of the Googelator (oh, so that's how it really happened)
------------------------------------------
Shortlist:

telford
- God's Will (karma is a bad cookie)
Victoria Silverwolf - The Ambassadors (I knew that dolphin at the aquarium was up to something! Nobody believed me. I kept telling them: Top hats and monocles are NOT fishwear!)
Moonbat - Delete Where Applicable (inspired)
-------------------------------------------------
VOTE:
Starbeast - Ballad of Starbeast: Galactic Gunslinger. (I laughed out loud with this one. The level of shameless egomania and obnoxious feel-good vibes are genius. I literally imagined Starbeast sitting while writing this story, singing the old theme song from batman: "nanaNAna nanaNAna nana Starbeeeeast!". My vote goes to your ridiculousness sir. Good job.

Shortlist, Runners up, Vote*

Telford - God's Will
Robert Mackay- And you see not...
Remedy- A rival*
DG Jones- The Diaspora...
Phyrebat- Blessed Matricide
Culhwch- Aftermath

Bob Senior- Guaranteed to Arrive on Time
Michael Coorlim- Re-arrival

This month was easier for me than last month, though the quality of writing still remained equally as high, but my vote goes to one that stood out from the very first reading. There were a few runners up that we're battling for the vote, but still missed out.

These runners up were

Void - I will never look at an envelope and stamp the same way again. I will literally think about this every time I see one, and it was a brilliant look at something so mundane. Makes me wonder what else will have a great story if they could just talk and think:whistle:

Micheal Coorlim - it's very difficult to make me laugh in earnest, but this story and situation was brilliant. I can picture everything. It reminds me of a scene from a Men In Black spoof I saw years ago, I think called the obvious Men In White. They were playing with the de-neuraliser, had it set to a second or two, and pointed at themselves. "Hey, what does this button do?" FLASH. "Hey, what does this button do?" FLASH.
As with Void's story, I have thought about this one a lot over the last couple of weeks, and always smiled, so thank you.

Ratsy's gets my last special mention simply for the harrowing image of day turned to dusk because if all the bodies (assuming I read it correctly...). It is a very powerful scene that was formed erfectly in my head when reading it.

Finally, my vote goes to 'Bang' by Alc. This story I thought was brilliant! The loneliness of the cosmonaut at the edge of the universe, mixed in with the touch of awe-inspired megalomania made for a great character. And more than all of that is just the premise behind it, made this, for me at least, a spectacular piece of writing, that will stay with me for a very long time. And I mean, the first solo person to reach the very edge of the universe kinda deserves to be the God of the next one, right?

And thank you for the mention. :D

Ok. I read them, I read them all. Too many to do a proper longlist from so many excellent pieces of work, so here are my finalists.

In 4th place... Starbeast - for possibly the best piece of Oompah-oompah-omphaloskepsis I've ever seen.

In 3rd... Glen - purely because we clearly share the same tastes. I'll see you up the Khyber, eh?

In a very, very close 2nd place... Mosaix - what a naughty boy you are. I was almost about to wire my bank details to Lagos before I realised it was just a big fat scam.

And by the slenderest of slender margins, my vote goes to... Jo - because it was just brilliant. Damn you.
