Star Trek: Discovery - new series in 2017

So write and pitch it!

There's a new Star Trek series coming, and I'm happy! :)

With so much other great science fiction out there , why do you still cling to Star Trek ? Nostalgia ?

Am I under attack for liking Star Trek?

Eh...ok.

I love Star Trek if that offends you, I'm sorry.

And no... there's not a lot of great sci-fi out there. A lot doesn't mean a lot of greatness.

Cathbad Im not criticizing your liking star Trek, not at all.:)

But Im still very very very disappointed that you don't like Babylon 5. :(

Kidding ! :D:ROFLMAO:

Well, that's actually true. I recognize that Babylon 5 was ground-breaking sci-fi, but for my taste, it was too over the top.

JMS did an amazing job realizing his whole B5 concept . He planed 5 years and he got it. One top of He wrote most of the episodes himself. In B5 the good guys didn't always carry the day , Things went wrong beloved characters could die. He pushed the envelope I loved the whole Vorlon Shadow dynamic .

I didn't like the lead... criminal? I imagine the show was a more logical vision of such a future.

But who wants logic?

;)

Let me first say that I also love Star Trek, so that isn't the issue. The issue is that at 50 years old, many of the concepts that would be in a prequel series, or in a series concurrent with the original series, are anachronistic. I also like Flash Gordon or Dan Dare too! However, they are not a future history. Rocket ships, strong-jawed men and women in mini-skirts and a quarter of the galaxy populated by other humanoids are, among other things, fantasy rather than science fiction. The future will be more like the Expanse.

Now, the producers have two options is they want to make new Star Trek. They can reboot it or retcon it as the film series has done, in which case it is not Star Trek anymore, or they can live entirely within the nostalgic future history fantasy. If it isn't Star Trek then please don't call it Star Trek just to make more money. If is is a nostalgic, future history, fantasy, then I'm not even saying that it will be terrible, I'm only questioning how big an audience there is for it. If only @Cathbad and myself watch it then it will get cancelled as soon as they can sack the actors and break the sets. When I watch a new series I have a certain investment in the story and I want to be sure it will reach a conclusion.

Sorry if I appear to be "bad-mouthing" "prior to the first episode." Looking back I am probably guilty of the same with the other series too, but the differences in social attitudes and technology between those series and the 1960's was not as great as it is now, so this series is very different in my mind. Enterprise had the same problems and I still don't think they solved them. Anyway, I'm not quite as down on it as @BAYLOR , but I will continue to be critical and ready to say "I told you so" when I finally get to see it.

I heard from "fans" that TNG and DS9 would be cancelled after one season, too.

Star Trek isn't alone in this phenomenon. Star Wars fans do the same thing with each movie - yet they continue to be blockbusters.

:D

Okay, you have me there. I was quite open about The Force Awakens but it was successful precisely because it was nostalgic and full of homages. Rogue One was even more so; heavily so, whereas the three prequels (which a substantial number of fans regard as an aberration) were a completely different character and style, and made for a younger audience. Though as you say, none of them were unsuccessful.

I have the same concerns as you do @Dave. The new series doesn't provide anything new and they aren't going to reboot it because then it will conflict with JJ-Verse. The technology that is in star trek is now limited after once spearheading a whole new world of science fiction to explore. Even with the new movies there isn't much advancement in technology, although as I have pointed out in other threads, this might be a symptom of the genre itself. When was the last time a new technology was explored within a science fiction universe? Much like fantasy these days, everything is being rehashed. The only thing is The Expanse has done it better than anybody else. Space-wise.

Netflix & HBO is doing some great things on the philosophical side for science fiction TV anyway, and that might be where we go next with sci-fi. Star Trek only ever really lightly touched upon the cultural stuff, it was never a deep-thinking show like say Humans. It did spear-head science fiction that touched upon how other cultures lived in space and all that but again it was never deep thinking... Although, they do it much better than Star Wars does.

However, the thing with CBS they have a loyal audience that skews older. I think All-Access has about 1 Million subscribers and hopefully, The Good Fight has brought in some younger people to sign up for the service.

enterprise was already a before tos why do another series before tos?

This is the problem that the Trek Franchise faces. Star Trek has lots of competition , It can't stay in one place . The Abrams films gave Trek an opportunity to go in different direction and what happened ? They decided to change nothing and , this will doom Discovery to a quick cancellation.

Had I been in charge of the Network I would have rejected Discovery outright. Or I would told Brian Fuller , I want it set in the Kelvin universe and in the same time frame as the Abrams films.

Point of Fact: I have absolutely no doubt whatsoever, that if the new series were set 50 years after TNG, had an announced budget of $25m per episode and 8 A-List actors signed, 98% of supposed Star Trek fans would be bitterly complaining, and dissing the project.

As it was for every series and movie to date, so shall it be for this one and all future ones.

For my part, there hasn't been a series or movie I haven't loved.

I would strongly suggest to the naysayers... Don't watch Discovery.
