Star Trek: Discovery - new series in 2017

Three's Company had a replacement actor the evening before filming began. The pilot was rejected twice and re-filmed a third time before being accepted.

All I can say, then, as you expect the worse, I'll keep hoping for the best.

Right here, you make my point. You assume that this series is going to be bad. What "genuine reason to be critical of the development of this series" are you privy to?

I've seen absolutely nothing to be overly critical of. But like I said, it really doesn't matter what the concept or who the actors chosen are, fans would bitterly complain. They always have, and apparently always will.

This article pretty much sums up all the problems this show has had since concept. http://io9.gizmodo.com/what-the-f*ck-is-going-on-with-star-trek-discovery-1794639961

I mean at this point, most networks would have just gave up but seeing as CBS wants this show to drive up subscribers for those people who didn't watch The Good Wife or NCIS and are sci-fi fans

Anybody objectively knows that a show with this many problems is going to continue to be a mess. I think Fuller realized this early on. To say this is the fans fault is laughable at best. However, I will give you something here. The amount of attention that this show has gotten in pre-production has been so heightened that holes being poked into it was bound to happen. I've actually never seen such a focus on a show in pre-production before. Maybe Red Mars was close, but Spike quickly shelved it.

We love Star Trek, and we don't want studio infighting to mess it up. I for the life of me can't get my mind around the Paramount/CBS partnership. It seems all they do is fight over star trek.

I give up.

But I'm still going to watch - and, I'm sure, enjoy.

But all this negativity from supposed fans wears me out and depresses me. I'll leave this thread to y'all.

The problem is the network decided to involve themselves more then they should . This is likely going to prove problematic for the shows long term prospects of success.

You haven't so far. The links that have been posted were not from some fanboys who are "moaning," but from industry insiders simply reporting on the latest problems or changes. However, each time such a link has been posted you have made a reply saying that it is the fault of the "fans."

I do not wish it to fail, in fact I have been at great pains to point out why I really don't want it to fail, and I honestly don't know how I can say that again in any other way. I also object to being labelled as being part of some herd mentality or fan conspiracy, that insinuates that I can't think for myself, or that I can't view these reports objectively. I will admit it, I am a glass-half-empty person rather than a glass-half-full person, and that it is always much easier to find fault with anything than it is to find things to applaud, and I do appreciate that some people may have reasons to want it to fail. In this particular case, I don't see any of that as relevant to what I have consistently said about this new show. I've actually no idea about the plot, and would rather it was a surprise (and also hope to enjoy it.) We have been, in the main, discussing production problems of the studio's own making.

However, I don't see why one can't be critical of something and still enjoy it too. I can also think of many, many examples of other things in life where I loved the idea or concept, but I didn't think that the implementation was too good. I've been making critical reviews of TV shows and films on this website for the last 16 years and I'm not about to stop that now.

There is also the possibly that this show might make it in spite of all the difficulties.

We haven't seen the final product and it may be excellent. It may be the best Star Trek series ever made. I honestly really hope so. If it is meant to be a showcase for bringing new scifi subscribers to the pay-for-view channel, then it has a lot riding on its success. That may give it more leeway when decisions are made about its continuation. I really don't understand why some shows are renewed and others get cancelled anyway. It doesn't seem to be related to their quality at all.

In my lifetime I've seen plenty shows that I've liked that have gotten the axed and shows that I couldn't stand get renewed.

I don't like the whole Pay for view on this show and I suspect I'm not alone on that one. This could end further diminishing the audience for the show.

There was a study that about half the Good Wife fans watched the Good Fight. The Good Fight is a spin-off of the Good Wife that is CBS All-Access's first original series. That apparently was enough to get it a second season.

Im going to watch it.

Darn. ;)

Anyway, I remember Mission at Far Point. Great story, but mostly poorly acted. And those first season uniforms! Ugh! Of course, it got much better. My fear is that if this series isn't instantly the greatest series of them all, the fan backlash will make it a one seasoner.

And that would be a shame.

For once I can agree with you. ~ Donald J. Trump

While I do agree, I actually think that the delays in production are a very good sign. If they were happy to release anything, whatever the quality, then it wouldn't have taken them quite so long. I still wonder if the older fans are quite that important to the success of this. Maybe they are more important given the cable channel release? Otherwise, it would be about the new viewers they could attract, given the time that any new Star Trek has been off our screens.

No doubt about it, I will be watching this too.

Trek with 1 series and 4 spinoffs has been by far the most successful science fiction franchise in television history. The only franchise that approaches it is Stargate which spawned two spinoffs. CBS is banking on its built in audience which is a reasonable gamble for the Network to make. Making it a 13 episode season also works in it' favor favor because that will make the series a bit cheaper to produce .

This is dangerous, untrodden territory.

It almost sounds like you said something positive about the new series!!
