Star Trek: Discovery - new series in 2017

But it also looks highly interesting. I would say that for those who wanted to see Star Trek head in a new direction, that this might just fit the bill.

As this is set ten years before ST:OS how many episodes before a twenty something Kirk pops up, and how long will the Enterprise style uniforms last?

  1. There seems to be a awful lot of exploding ships!
  2. Possibly many spoilers there if you look closely, so not sure I wanted to.
  3. At 1.00 what are those coral-like things? Are they a re-imagined Horta?

Or there's nothing. The link will not work in the good U S of A.

Among the reveals Saturday at the "Star Trek: Discovery" panel at San Diego Comic-Con is that lead character Micheal Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) is the biological daughter of Spock's mother Amanda , and Spock's father Sarek is her surrogate father.

The character was also raised on Vulcan.

As to how the show is going to thread the needle of introducing a heretofore unrevealed major character in Star Trek canon, Executive Producer Alex Kurtzman told the Comic-Con audience, "We're aware. You'll see where it's going, but we are staying consistent with canon."
Spock Has a Sister .. No, Really, and the New 'Star Trek: Discovery' Trailer

I don't know what to say. Spock's sister, he or Sarek never spoke of in all these previous series. How did that happen?

Or Netflix.
It's still not clear if US Netflix will get the series. They should put it on CBS after hours or weekends and Netflix after the series has had some time on All Access, but something tells me that ain't gonna happen.

The fact they never spoke of the other thirteen siblings is not, to me, surprising at all! Glad to have them around! :)

The other Vulcans showed more emotion and they also spoke about their families. I think thirteen siblings is abnormality when most of their culture is so devoted on being stoic. But I could believe that number from the Klingons. Their war machine alone demands for the large families.

I was going to say she is no more of a surprise than Sybok was, but I see I've been beaten to it with the 12 other siblings.

Also, if you read on to the comments of the link, there is a good explanation of how he cannot have a sister given current canon. However, you can't make an omelette with breaking eggs, and you can't make a prequel without breaking or reconning canon. I accepted that they were going to do this already, I just don't know why they think that they won't.

Prequels don't have to break or recon anything. If done properly they should be expanding upon the original source material. They shouldn't require breaking of anything and, in my view, when a prequel breaks things its due to either lazy writing; bad writing; poor understanding of the source material or an oversight.
The main problems you get are when there is a legitimate reason why we'd never have heard of Spocks sister through the entire of Startrek thus far, but where there is a sister who can be written into the series with a plausible argument. The problem then is more the lack of reference (even subtle) in the preceding series (that postdate the prequel). It's the kind of thing that only a prequel written at the same time as the main series can achieve because at least then the writer of the main series can slip little references and tells into the main series to link up with the prequel.

Fuller is talking and things... don't look good. I seriously liked his vision a whole heck of a lot better:

It wasn’t just for a ‘Trek’ series but for multiple serialized anthology shows that would begin with the ‘Discovery’ prequel, journey through the eras of Captain James T. Kirk and Captain Jean-Luc Picard, and then go beyond to a time in ‘Trek’ that’s never been seen before.

Bryan Fuller Originally Wanted ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ to Be an Anthology Series

Now STD, yes that's the acronym. C'mon now CBS! is none of those things except the prequel part and so will if they get it season 2. All I can say is we saw what happened when the producers started to trash Suicide Squad. Hopefully, this gets contained.
