Discussion Thread -- February 2016 75-word Writing Challenge

50 entries! The front-runners will need to be good to stand out

My vote is cast. That was quite a session, and I was structured about reviewing the entries. In order then, starting with what I thought were the best:

For me, there were two clear stand-out entries:
Then two edged above a group of seven others that I liked:
Honourable mentions for sparks of writing:
Anyone wanting expansion on my notes on their entry, feel free to PM me. I'll try to be nice ;p

Horror has to be my least favorite genre. I find that there is plenty enough horror in the world without creating some stories about it.

Anyway.... for me horror meant that the story had to make me shiver or at least be spooky. And for this challenge there had to be something that was not seen in some way.

Special Mention for Clever phrases:
Alex the G & T:
"The Sounds of Violence"
Grimward: "The Receivership of the Ring"

Short List:
Ashleyne B. Watts --- STM --- A parasite nightmare. I thought "Alien"
Cat's Cradle --- Tea and Clover --- Yuck! a ghost lover.
Droflet --- Belasco Manor --- Is the house the killer or is there a killer in the house?
Alex Darion --- The Noise --- The worst thing is to be safe when no one's left.

Contenders
Crystal Haven
--- In the Silence --- Child abuse to an evil spooky level.
Mad Alice --- Everything Comes Out in the Wash --- Horrific justice

Vote Receiver
Little Star --- The Watcher in the Woods --- This could be the beginning of a really good Steven King novel.

Contenders, contenders, so many *&^%$# contenders. Sigh.
Honorable mentions: Ihe, J5V, Mr O, Inca, Serge, Pam, Bob snr, Crystal, Mosiax, Will, Alex, Grim, Dusty, Cul, VB, and of course, as usual, her honor. These and all others are winners in my book.
There was one story that hit me between the eyes and overshadowed all other worthy stories. Yeah, she's creep and she's kookie, and I still have concerns for her. Ashlene gets the gold for a truly bone chilling and memorable tale. (Sorry, Ash, my vote almost guarantees you won't win. Yeah, it's the Droflet curse.)
Well done everyone. Oh, and the newbies. Wow, just wow.

Thanks for the nod, Parse, and you too, Sir Drof (and for your wisdom besides!).

Good use of the white shading, DG. I'd had fun with that before in these here Chrons, but never in a 75-worder; well done!

Keep it up, HazelRah, and the kiddies will all be scared of me.:D

Only done with a first read (I don't read any of them until I submit mine; it's a daunting enough task as it is, but if I knew what you talented folk had turned out beforehand, I'd never submit!), so must dive into them again. Can I just say in the meanwhile that you all have ruined my sleep for the evening?*shudders*

Wow! A listing and a vote on the first morning of voting! I'd be happy with that result after all was said and done! :)
Thanks for the listing Parson, and thank you so much for the vote, J5V! Wow...rough day yesterday, great start to this new day. Good luck in the voting, all. :) CC

A genre and theme that generated some good, original stories.

My favourites this month:
  • Cascade - beautiful and then disturbing
  • DG Jones - I do like a trek to the north
  • Shyrka - liked the format of this
  • Cat’s Cradle - embracing the horror - "corrupted splinters
  • Clockworkbot - noir horror
  • johnnyjet - unwelcome attention
  • HazelRah - nursery rhyme horror
  • chrispenycate - phantom
  • Grimward - the horror…

Wowza! Thank you Glen! I'll stop posting should I be lucky enough to receive any other listings, but it's been a tough February, and those votes have really lifted my spirits. Amazing...

Sorry about the DP!

Really good stories this month...it was so hard to cull, but I’m finally there. So…

Honorable mentions, in order posted (I hope:)):
Vaz, J5V, Glen, Phyrebrat, mosaix, Alex Darion, Grimward, Venusian Broon

Short list:
Cascade, Ihe, johnnyjet, JordanSC5, LittleStar, farntfar

Finalists:
Ashleyne - wonderfully creepy...terrific details, Ashleyne!
Robert Mackay - sad and painful...I hope Ellen will be okay.
Jo Z. - an engrossing, realistic feel here...loved the last line.
Alex G (& T) - really effective, Alex, good job!
T. Judge - grossly, horrifyingly realistic and scary! Eww!

Vote: Jo Z. I really felt this one...loved the depiction of the MC's psychological horror.

I don't remember a month when it was so painful to leave others off the list. Great job everyone, CC

Thanks for the mention, @Glen, I really wasn't sure whether it would work for people. I think I may have made marmite.

MemoryTale, Culhwch and the Judge get mentions from me - on a very good month with very varied and high quality posts.
It was between VB (very clever, the eyes being the window to your soul), LittleStar (creepy and wonderful, good job) and Cat's Cradle (what's not seen is the MOST scary).

The one that stays with me and won't leave me is Cat's - I'm still scared stiff....

I'm off to shoot some pizza munching zombies and give them what for.

So, my short-short-list:

@TheDustyZebra - I really liked the way this used the genre to talk about the subject.
@crystal haven - Because it made me laugh, and comedy felt a little under-represented
@Cat's Cradle - The specificity is what makes this work for me. He's not just singing - he's singing arias. It's not just tea, it's Russian tea with clover honey.

And I voted for TDZ, because of how well it hit the target.

Oh my goodness, a realio, trulio vote? *falls down in dead faint*

Thank you! I didn't even expect any mentions this month, much less an actual vote! My day... nay, my month... is made! :D

@thomas sweetman Firstly, nice to meet you. And second, you created a tragic, yet awesome superhero tale. Marvelous and sad.

@ratsy For some people, it's the little things in life that can keep sanity in check. Psychotically fantastic.

@Grimward A buyer is completely unaware of his cursed purchase. This is a precious tale forged in hellish gold. Great stuff.

@TheDustyZebra Unbeknownst to a victim, a cancerous growth with intelligence delights inside. Infectiously cool.

@Culhwch Guilt is the unseen demon that pursues a man with a conscious, until he couldn't bear it no longer. Ghastly great.

@farntfar Et tu Nosferatu. Astonishingly written poem about a night stalking vampire. Bloody good, with 13 essential vitamins.

@Venusian Broon Mirror mirror, on the wall. Who's got one of the best stories of them all? Demonically delightful.

@The Judge Eat, drink and be merry, because tomorrow, you'll be blasting bloodied guts from every bodily hole. A story plagued with tasty goodness. Vomit bag, anyone?

@Mad Alice Does anyone really get away with murder? Not in this chilling tale of death. Redrum, redrum, REDRUM!!!
