Discussion thread -- June 2016 75-word Writing Challenge

Victoria Silverwolf should write the blurbs for an anthology series - it would give readers a great concise overview of what to expect without giving anything away ... just saying

Right that's it, you lot have asked for it. I'm giving you all what for with my "A La Carte" ray gun. It's set to taster, or rapid fire, and you lot better be hungry.

Wait ... if you turn things to toast, does that mean that I can finally wear my Wonder-bread Mandalorian Armor, and you will make it crispy for me?

As I think through this one I am realizing that it is the first one I've tried that is restricted to fantasy. I'm having a harder time with this than I thought I would. Every time I come up with something, I try to explain it, and that logical explanation defies the spirit of fantasy..... I think.

This gets me thinking. Is that the real line between sci fi and fantasy? Is it 'this thing exists because of logic' (sci fi) vs. 'this thing exists just because' (fantasy)?

I'm sure this has been hashed out before, but I would be interested to get your takes on it.

I'm not complaining. Like Stravinsky said, "Put yourself in a strait jacket and dance the free dance."

This is my opinion, take it, accept it, throw it away, whatever you wish.

Sci-Fi may be possible in real life because it might have a scientific basis. Where in science? That would depend on the story.

Fantasy, on the other hand, comes from dreams or a twist of the truth. Think back to The Legend of Sleepy Hollow or Lord of the Rings. They were a twist of what once was thought to be truth or had a real life basis with a little imagination thrown in. Does that mean things in fantasy can't be real or scientifically proven? It would be difficult but it's possible I think.

I couldn't give you a precise answer because most of this is my opinion not based on any proven fact. If you were looking for a more definite answer, I do apologize.

We've had so many stories so far, I had to do the math.

If we keep up this pace, we'll have 220 entries.

Wouldn't that be great? ;)
