Sekrit 9?

So this weekend will be pretty packed with me trying to write my final round story for the NYC Midnight competition, but I'll try to get this put together very soon.

Hey, 2017 is the year I start following through with stuff. I'm not doing too badly with it so far. :)

I'm going to have to sit this one out this time as I singularly failed to finish my entry for the deadline last time due to delusions of grandeur (I'm still working on it on and off - its at 39k words now...) and I wouldn't want to disappoint folks again.

I shall watch the format changes with interest.

I'm going to give this one a try.

I like the idea of no word limit (at least 1K preferred), and a good amount of time to write it.

Now I just need to think of what I'd like someone to write (theme & genre).

ALRIGHT THEN.

Here are a few prepackaged ideas for plot, theme, etc. Consider these a jumping off point, but you may also ignore them completely and request whatever you'd like. There is no requirement to pick one from column A, one from column B, etc. Use any combination of these ideas that you wish, or use none of them. The power is in your hands.

Plot ideas:

-Sentient appliances
-When the sun turned purple
-Ears on the menu
-Mice everywhere
-A tragic cheese shortage
-The new colony on Mars has a problem with bees
-Dancing elves at war
-Where'd the android go?

Character ideas:

-An exterminator
-A cheesemonger
-A microbiologist with a weird secret
-A funeral director
-A private investigator
-A writer with a weird secret
-Three beavers stuffed in a jacket
-A naked elf who is very cold

Genre ideas:

-Weird
-Hard SF
-Soft SF
-Melted SF
-Jiggly SF
-Steampunk
-Dieselpunk
-Cyberpunk
-Noir
-Humorous SF

Here's where I cut and paste the Sekrit rules from the previous thread and change stuff to fit my whims:

From now until June 1, 2017, you may post details in this thread about what type of story you'd like to receive: it could be a genre with a specific MC, or a twist on a specific location, or it can be a mix and match of the above ideas.

By posting a request you're effectively "registering" to write a story for somebody else.

By June 15, 2017 I will pair up requests for the participants and send them out.

Stories should be submitted to me by September 1, 2017.

  • I AM IMPOSING A WORD LIMIT because I'm the boss here and who are you to question me? So, 5,000 words max. Don't make me read dictionaries worth of stuff, people. Anyone who sends me over 5,000 words will annoy me.
  • Whilst the pieces do not appear in their entirety on the forum, and so writing standards are a little more relaxed it is polite to assure that at least an excerpt-worth be family friendly: please no gornography or gratuitous erotic razzamataz. If the full length version is to be attached, this holds for the submission as a whole
  • When you've finished your story, you send it to the admin - in this instance sinister42 - and who'll pass it on to the person who initially requested that story so they do not know who wrote it.
  • When all stories have been submitted (by September 1, 2017), the Admin will post excerpts in a guessing thread and we will try and guess who wrote which one - it is a fun exercise identifying Chrons members' voices in their writing.
  • After a week or so of guessing, the authors will be revealed.
  • Inter alia, at the end, if all parties agree, I can post the full stories for those who want it.
  • If you request a story, and you by extension receive a request from somebody else, WRITE ONE!
I will assign myself my favorite request and write it as an extra, but I won't request one of my own.

As an extra added bonus:

If I like your story, I might (with your permission) read your story on my podcast, Write Sinister. I'll be more likely to read your story on my podcast if it contains cross-genre or "weird" elements. Details will follow when they do.

And...GO.

Nope. Those things are there for you to choose from or ignore as you see fit. Consider them a jumping off point, but feel free to request something else entirely.

I balked at the word limit til I got to the bonus.

If we go over, just so I know I've got this right, we just annoy you and are less likely to be read on you podcast? I assume probability of being read over podcast to decrease with every extra 100 words or so... Am I in the right ball park?

I'm still thinking what I want, will get my request in by the 1st for sure.

Going over 5,000 words won't disqualify you or anything, but I am less likely to read it on my podcast, simply due to timing constraints.

I find that totally reasonable.

(also, why is this the first I've heard of your podcast? Is it on YouTube?)

Because I haven't actually recorded any of it yet. :)

Actually the whole "knowing about something before other people" thing is way over. We hipsters are now into ironic reappropriations of things that never existed in the first place.

;)

Ah, I see.

In that case I would simply like a story set in a rainy location.

I live in the western Lake District uk.
Relevant word being Lake.
Obviously there are several and clearly they need constant filling or they stop being lakes and become holes.
The constant filling is the seemingly endless rain we get here.
There are two wet seasons with a rainy season in between them. This is alleviated by us also having a 'not so dry' season.
The Eskimo's allegedly have forty words for snow - we have a lot of words for rain, mostly unprintable ones!

Well, so far you're under 5000 words.

Wait... I've been led to believe that in the UK there are only two seasons: The Rainy Season and the Not Quite So Rainy Season?
