I'm reading these other dark stories and I'm like, "Aw come on!" I mean I'm actually sitting here in Kabul with toys from my kids, and y'all just jump on the dark toy bandwagon

In my opinion, good ol' Ser Martin hasn't written anything nearly as good as A Song For Lya or as dark as Sandkings - which is really wonderful.

Well, I didn't think mine was dark. I was hoping for "poignant", but I'll settle for "heartrendingly touching in its pathos". (I'd put a smilie there but it seems a bit inappropriate in the circumstances.)

I personally had not read the others before posting my own, but most of the stories definitely have...lets say...pathos...
I think it's the whole doll thing. Brings out a lotta emotions I reckon.

You know, this is a good point. Dark could mean "having a melancholy atmosphere", "depicting of terrible things", "being tragic" or any number of other things or combination of these.

I was going to say I hope you didn't take the jack-in-the-box, but, all things considered, I hope you did. You have more firepower.

OT: When I was very young we loved these fireworks called Jack in the Box, or Jumping Jacks.

They used to bounce and bang and were undoubtedly sentient. Always seeming to chase the most frail people.

They're banned now. Long-banned but I wonder who remembers them?

Lord, if we'd had those, they'd have chased me, and I'd have remembered them. But then, I had a dog who protected me from fireworks. So much so that she had to be locked in the garage when we set off fireworks, because she would grab a sparkler out of my hand and try to kill it like a snake. Maybe that's the reason we didn't have these things?

They always seemed to be going off in the middle of crowded disco floors when I was early teens. I'm sure the local clubs used to do it on purpose to get everybody cleared off, it was usually just before the last dance

Really good stories this month. Nice genre choice, mosaix. I'm in with a simple poem (and have nothing for the 300, yet); poem's darkish, though.
