NaNoWriMo 2017

I might join in if I can nail down an idea I really love prior to the date. Should be editing, but there we go.

I have been burned out by NaNo so many times in the past that I vowed never again. However I've just been made redundant today (effective immediately), so I guess I have time on my hands...?

Sorry to hear about that :( I was made redundant earlier in the year and pretty much the only saving grace was the hours upon hours of uninterrupted writing time ... (of a project which I promptly scrapped 2 months later, but that’s just me and my commitment issues)

@mistri @allmywires I was also made redundant a couple of months ago and it royally sucks. I can't even say that I've had any time to write during that period as I'm being made to work to the end of my contract, with little time off for doing other things. So... double sucky. Counter intuitively, I find that I write more freely when I'm in work, as I'm not fretting over other stuff. Security brings freedom. So I won't be doing NaNo this year - a shame, as my WIP needs a rocket up its butt and Nano would have provided that.

@DelActivisto I did Nano 2 years ago and used it to kick start my then-WIP. I didn't manage the whole 50K words (I think I managed around 36K, IIRC), but the fact I was doing it in an online group with my writing chums and gave myself targets each day made it easier. By the end, I'd made enough of a start to the novel that I finished it in another 6-7 months, and I sold it to a publisher that summer. So it works, and I loved it. If you want to think it's work, then fine. But just because it involves targets and ambitions, it doesn't mean it's suddenly work to a lot of other people. Besides, as they say, if you love your work, it's no longer work.

I work fairly similarly as well I've found. Uncertainty and lots of free time aren't great friends of my writing; routine is.

Mistri, in your case, I'd be wary of going back to something that's burnt you out so much before.

QUESTION

I thought I'd give NaNo a try. So I've put the book info in... but, um...

I can't see what I do next??

I didn't say I thought it was work. Your last line is exactly what I was saying.

I don’t really have an opinion of Nano; if it works for you, then do it. I fancy participating one year just for the camaraderie and support (don’t forget, nano isn’t just about hitting your goals, but helping others, too), and sense of tribal membership.

What I hate about nano is the amount of elitist naysayers that go on about how dreadful or unnecessary it is. Why is it they have to campaign their disdain so vocally? Just dont do it if it’s not for you.

I’m far too chicken to commit to it right now. If I’d finished the wip I’d probably give it a go this time but ... perhaps next year

I just try to avoid responding to the naysayers...

Phyre, my hometown horror I just finished is going to need a beta soon.... just sayin'

My beta queue-zi weighs a ton! I have 3 before we even get to Div & Co and hometown horror. In fact I have read one book this year - TDZ’s gift of the awesome Beach Music by Pat Conroy. I started it in January... I’m now about 2/5ths through.

To say I’m a terribly slow reader is an understatement.

Uhmmmm, my book is far better than The Fisherman, so you will want to read it quickly. :ninja:

edit: ratsy cannot verify this claim, since he hasn't even read the book back yet

Where you would normally. All you really do on the NaNo site (or all I do) is use it for the tally and the chart. Just write and stick your numbers in the NaNo site and keep going. You can join groups there and whatnot for support and all that.
