Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017) (WITH SPOILERS!)

Finn might just have gotten it wrong or made an assumption; fairly plausible since he wasn't involved in the battle at all and instead only met her well after where she showed him that it was her last connection to her sister. It's a logical jump to then have him think it was her sisters or to just jump to that short-hand way of saying it in the heat of the moment.

Something a lot of people won't have noticed or realised ...

In the original Star Wars, when Luke and Han are disguised as Stormtroopers and walking a supposedly cuffed Chewbacca to the detention block, there was a bit where the camera followed a little black droid going too close to them. The droid looked like a little black shoebox and repeatedly made a high-pitched vibrating noise like "dah-dah-da-da" - but then Chewie growled at it and the droid retreated with a high-pitched squeal. Luke and Han continued on to the detention block...

This was present in the first TV viewing - I know because I recorded it all on a tape recorder, and listened to it continuously for years after. However, this snippet was missing from the video release and the subsequent DVD releases, which all begin that scene just after the droid had fled.

Anyway ... in The Last Jedi, when Finn and BB8 finally get on board the Dreadnought, we see - and hear - one of those same droids, and BB8 even disguises himself as a larger version making the same noises.

I figure the director was making some kind of point by putting that in. I'm not sure what it was, but it's nice to see one of the lesser known post-release cuts to the original Star Wars being referred to. :)

[I'm sure there was probably a more succinct way to explain that - excuse me, I'm tired. :) ]

My VHS copy doesn't have those cuts, the added cgi monsters, or Greebo shooting first. I hadn't realised that the black shoe-box messenger-bot-thing was subsequently edited out, and so I got the reference immediately. I never thought that most people wouldn't understand the reference. It does seem strange then, that something should be added only for people of a certain age.

Strange that they'd edit that bit out - my VHS copy also had the little droid getting roared at.

I recall someone saying that apparently the Disney purchase of Fox means that they've also got rights to the original VHS release of the original trilogy so could potentially release them; not remastered, no edited!

Yeah, I've had numerous versions - VHS and DVD - and never noticed that cut. Makes me want to check out my current DVDS (special eds with the regular eds on disc two) to see!

The Death Star droid encounter was said to be a bit added by Marcia Lucas. As editor she felt some humor was needed. That was one of her contributions. Another was the final scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark with Marion Ravenwood on the steps. Incredibly, when they filmed the movie and did the first edit, they went from the island to the Washington office, and then the warehouse. Although everyone in the production crew was pleased with it, she asked if Marion was left on the island, and after realizing they just abandoned her in the story, they shot an additional scene.

Yeah I said that, I thought they were matching ones initially. But then Finn says 'it was her sister's.'

I saw this again today, so I can solve this mystery! Finn never says it was her sister's necklace, only that it means a lot to her. I also don't think that they were two halves of one necklace, but rather that they just matched. Granted I'm no expert, though - I normally wouldn't pay such close attention to jewelry!

My thoughts after a second watch - I still really liked it, but still think it was probably too long and had quite a few flaws. Surprisingly, this time through I didn't mind the casino scenes that much (although that whole subplot is still unnecessary) and instead felt the Luke-Rey scenes were dragging a bit. I think for me it's going to end up as an enjoyable watch, good but not great, and it won't ever be a match for the originals, or even Rogue One.

Saw it again last night in Tenafly, NJ, in a tiny little bijoux theare with terrible sound. Even so, I find myself enjoying it even more every successive view. I still think the the first two space battles could have been combined into one to shorten the film and there could be some other judicious edits here and there, but I'm really pleased with it overall.

I just got back from seeing it and was pleasantly surprised. The film wasn’t without its faults, but it was a good astar Wars Movie. I, for one am pleased to see that they handed over nicely to the new crew.

Do you think the Falcon will be destroyed and Chewbacca will be killed off in the next one?

Kill Chewie?

Aren't wookiees meant to have life-spans measured in hundreds of years? I thought Chewbacca was meant to be very old.

It would be nicely circular if Kylo Ren and Rey become the duet who Falcon all around the galaxy. But I don't want him to die.
