Discussion Thread -- APRIL 2020 -- 300-Worder Writing Challenge (#37)

Again, 'Wow!'! Thank you, all, for the congrats and kind words about my story. There were so many great entries this month, and it's an honor to receive votes, let alone win.

And on winning, I credit my wife with this one. When I have my story ideas for the Challenges, I like to write them up fast, and then post them. I often ask my wife to take a look at my story before posting, because she has a great eye for typos, and for whether or not the logic in the piece makes sense (she'd make a great editor).

She read this one and said, "It could be better." And I was a bit whiny, and said 'But is it good enough to post?', and she said, 'Yes, but it could be better.'

So I took one more pass, and it was better. She's not a member here, but 'Thanks, dear!'

Huge thanks to The Judge for the listing, and I'll add Astro Pen, Teresa Edgerton, Mr Orange, Jo Zebedee and Ursa major to my earlier list of vote thank yous.

Just being able to enter these Challenges with such nice and talented people is its own reward. To have such a fine diversion from the world is very welcome. Can't wait for the next 300 worder, in July. Till then, see you all in the 75 worders, CC

Congratulations Cat' Cradle!
I need to catch up with my thanks to @LittleStar for your vote, and @Phyrebrat , @Cat's Cradle , and @Mr Orange for the mentions.
@Ursa major I appreciate the mention, but that was my last 300's entry entry. I'm glad it made a lasting impression

When I finally got my idea formulated, I realised it was going to be a 'verb tense' nightmare. I wanted to portray the disconnect between what we see in the mirror (our physical selves) and what our mind sees, in the context of someone who has lost their connection with time. How I wish I had the The Judge's expertise and Teresa's or Victoria's word smithing to be able to write the story I wanted. As it is, I am thrilled with my votes and mentions.

Congtrats to Cat who streaked to the front from half way on. Glad I backed a winner

My first effort finding my feet here, 5 votes and 7 mentions was a decent result for me so thanks for all of your encouraging positives (y)

If it were a single vote I think I would have gone with AMB.
There was something about how it got to the end but didn't explain everything. Grandma not becoming the fourth was significant I felt. So many possibilities.

@Ursa major I appreciate the mention, but that was my last 300's entry entry. I'm glad it made a lasting impression
It is entirely your fault for engineering** a situation where you were second, by date of posting, in the Honourable Mentions section of my "decision post" for two 300-word Challenges in row.

** - I can only assume you had access to one or other of the dark arts in order to arrange this (thus tricking me, at one in the morning (my time), into thinking I'd already pasted*** in your new entry's name).

*** - It's easier to edit a previous "decision post" than to format it from scratch (even allowing for what must be done to thwart the software's attempts to strip the post of its formatting).

Congratulations to Cat's Cradle.

Thankee kindly to @Celine_Brace for the honourable mention.

Have fun, kids. See you next quarter, and may this lockdown not drive you completely bananas in the meanwhile. Cheers!

Congratulations, Cat's Cradle!

Thank you to nixie, chrispenycate, BigJ, Rafellin, Karn's Return, Celine_Brace, and Bren G for the votes, and to everyone else who mentioned my story.

more congratulations coming your way @Cat's Cradle! a great story that got my vote. good to see another story set in a museum got the win. so at least I got the setting right...

my story was inspired by the smoke/heat alarm (or whatever it is) that is visible in the mirror. the incongruousness (?) of it in an old, ornate mirror led me to someone seeing something similar in a painting. my first draft, as mentioned before, was rubbish and the MC was not happy with how serious he seemed so I did a last minute rewrite. then the crafty bugger managed to slip some romance in without me noticing.

take care all in whatever form of lockdown you're in and, most importantly, beware of the Lizard People!
