DISCUSSION THREAD -- January 2021 75 Word Writing Challenge

Before I run out of time, I'm off to re-read the stories.

Shortlisted:

Escape Artist by @Guttersnipe for a perfectly predictable any perfectly surprising ending.

Next time, please ask by @nixie for a Fantasy rescue which wasn't the real escape.

Shivertail by @Cat's Cradle for a Fantasy where real love reigns.

Luck of the Draw by @TheEndIsNigh for an entry that puts a whole new light on the title.

Going Through the Motions by @Peter V for a really crap job.

Careers Destroyed but Death – and a Daunting Buccal, Pharyngeal and Oesophageal Challenge – Averted by @The Judge for best mash up of a messed up ditty to maraud my memory.

----

In the end the sweet love story of Shivertail received my vote.

Didn't get an entry for this month - I wanted to because of the horror element being allowed, however my shortlist, favourites* and vote etc:

Guttersnipe
Nixie
Cat’s Cradle
Reiver33*
Wayne Mack*
Guanzee
Mosaix
Ianfortytwo*
Peter V
Hugh*
TJ

Well done everyone, I enjoyed the large amount of SF in this challenge.

First, thanks to Peter V for the fine genre/theme choices - they've inspired a diverse and enjoyable set of stories.
Close race to the finish line; here are my lists, and vote:

Honorables (I picked many Honorables):
Guttersnipe, paranoid marvin, Guanazee, sule, Peter V, shyrka

Semi-Finalists:
The Scribbling Man, BT Jones, farntfar, M. Robert Gibson, chrispenycate, The Judge (okay, I picked many S-Fs, too:))

Vote:
johnnyjet. I loved jj's bittersweet, moving tale. Nicely done, johnnyjet!

Thanks so much to: The Scribbling Man, nixie, Daysman, Peter V, M. Robert Gibson, Hugh, johnnyjet, and Phyrebrat for the listings.
A huge Thank You to therapist and Parson for the votes, how cool!!

Best of luck in receiving those final votes, everyone. :)

Ah. I had written the two challenges, including a completly poetical verse-ion for the seventy-five and my computer died - no OS. I have been breaking in my new computer for several days, but the backup disc didn't deliver the last version. I could remember a couple of lines from the verse, so wrote in prose to save time. And look. More mentions than I-ve had in ages - thank you, BT Jones, Heijan Xavier, johnnyjet, Provincial, therapist & Wayne Mack, and three whole votes, enormous thanks to Victoria, nixie and Edoc'sil.
My medium list of mentions went to Luiglin, Parson, Peter V and therapist, while the short shorts went to farntfar, M. Robert Gibson, stevietee, and The Judge, vote to stevietee.

My (possibly not accurate) chart says that
alexvss, Calliopenjo, farntfar, Heijan Xavier, Iwroteathing, jd73, Luiglin, Marvin, Peter V, Shyrka, stevietee, The Judge and Ursa major have not yet voted - isn't this the last day? And thanks to Perp, scarpelius and Phyrebrat for votes despite not having submitted.

Nearly Life, the universe and everything, but not quite.

Some good imagery this month folks.
  • @Iwroteathing – “to the realm of regret; the attic.” Great description.
  • @TheEndIsNigh – nice twist
  • @Peter V – I just hope the thing had had his bran flakes that morning
  • @G.T. – some nice imagery, especially “…shadowed beach of hungry crows”
  • @Shyrka – I like the idea of the storm being an eye, good touch of personification… or is Jupiter alive?
  • @Ursa major – groan, nice pun

And the vote went to @Shyrka

As ever some stories I didn't quite understand and one or two I didn't think hit the genre. My shortlist, which seems to be a good bit longer than usual:

BT Jones -- Reanimation Assessment No. 7653
chrispenycate -- Liberation
Guanazee -- The Further Adventures of...
Hugh -- There's so much you don't know about Nebraska
JS Wiig -- 'Till Death Us Do Part
Luiglin -- All I need is a book and a light to read her by
M. Robert Gibson -- Mission Irresponsible VII
Peter V -- Going Through the Motions
Provincial -- Retreat
reiver33 -- Jack's Raft to the Rescue
Shyrka -- The King's Well

The vote was easy as I was taken in the cleverness of BTJ's dry official report with its bitterly-right ending as soon as I read it, but MRG's funny irresponsible escaping ran it a close second.

And sharing a special award for the titles, Peter V for recycling a Pratchett pun and Luiglin for the Masefield homage!

Lots of spidery wriggling and jiggling thanks for the lovely mentions/shortlistings JS Wiig, nixie, Daysman, BT Jones, Peter V, G.T. (thanks, too, for the kind words), Hugh, johnnyjet, Perp, Parson, CC and Chris p -- golly, I think that's the most I've ever had!! (pity I couldn't turn them all into votes...) -- and star-cast strolling-cat agent-calling thanks for the glorious votes Provincial (extra thanks for the very kind comments) and Phyrebrat, and for the stealth vote, Marvin!

Whew, I'd almost forgotten the pressure of getting all the stories read and voted on in time, it's been so long. Thank you for all the lovely mentions - I wasn't expecting much given how rusty I am - but a couple of votes on top of that too? Consider me amazed.

Anyway, without further ado:

I cast the first vote.

Luck of the Draw for me. It's a clever story with a surprise at the end.

So does everyone vote again as if it was a choice of 2 (or choice of 1 in my case).

Well, given that I voted for TEIN in the first round, there's only one place my vote is going (y)

At the time of writing it's 13-12
What happens if the tie-break is tied?
