DISCUSSION THREAD -- FEBRUARY 2022 -- 75 Word Writing Challenge

Aye, I thought people were poking fun, then I thought it was some kind of initiation. But everything’s fine, I took a break and now more acclimated to the balance.

I was having trouble consoling myself to the fact that I can’t delete things. A loudmouth like me needs this option

Your one hell of good poster and a good person. Be yourself and have fun.

If we seem little , eccentric and crazy. Well, there's perfectly rational explanation for this. You see , all of us here are addicted to Monty Python's flying Circus , Terry Pratchett and we spend way to much time in Playroom section of the forum . Over time , these three things do have cumulative effect, a bit like radiation . :D We all have passion for books and writer snd all thing science fiction , fantasy and Horror and we do like Classical literature too. And we like classic tv shows like Star Trek , Dr Who , Quatermass and others. We like meeting new people with new ideas and perspectives on things. That's what keeps this place alive and vital and interesting. :)

Been there :giggle:
ps
I also hate that "Last edited: 3 minutes ago nah-nah-nah" thing. It's like the class snitch grassing you up when you correct a spello.
I sometymes leave the spello in rather than 'look like' I have made major modifications to the post.

FYI --- There is one hour to edit a post for anyone, and several hours (not sure how many) for supporters to edit. --- The exception to this comes in the Challenges when everyone, including the Mods have only 60 min. to modify after once posted.

Yes but the 'little message' starts appearing after only a couple of minutes and makes a mess of your layout. Worse than leaving out the comma you wished to insert. Since there is a one hour lock anyway why not leave people an hour to edit tidy without flagging it up conspicuously?

Not sure if this is the right place, but has anyone ever floated the idea of creating an ebook from the challenge entries? It could be a kind of writing prompt book. The 75 worders are nice and short for inspiration and already categorised, even the 300 word entries would be suitable in my opinion. It definitely wouldn't be any worse than the dozens of prompt books out there.

Years ago someone suggested making a book out of the Challenge entries -- I think from memory the idea was floated twice -- but it's something that really isn't going to get off the ground for practical reasons, and I recall Brian was also a bit put out at the idea, since it might have been seen as taking from/ripping off Chrons (in a moral sense, if not legal).

As to the issues involved which would have to be considered, first, there's copyright -- the stories can't be lifted straight from the Challenges, as the authors need to agree to allow their work to be published elsewhere, and getting consent from everyone would be impossible since a lot of members have left and don't return; indeed, some can't return. Then there's the issue of an editor -- ie someone who decides which stories are suitable for inclusion -- are you looking for a premium product, so it's only the best stories which are picked, or is it a free for all and quality doesn't count? And simple editing -- for the Challenges we can't change the stories once the editing window is closed, but would you to allow them to be tweaked to add the missing comma, or correct the mis-spelling, or larger changes prompted by comments in the Improving threads? Then there's cost and admin -- who is going to do all the work of getting it together, designing the cover, laying it out, making the index and everything else involved? Most importantly, who on earth is going to buy a book, when they can get all the stories for free and/or any prompt by reading them on Chrons? And in the unlikely event it is bought, who gets the money?!

Having said that, we each of us retain copyright in our own stories, so if anyone wants to try it with his/her own stories and those of friends who give their consent, the option is there, and other prompts could be included, and perhaps stories written specifically for the book if the numbers need to be made up. I've never seen a writing prompt book, but if they're popular, perhaps someone is making money out of them. What to me seems more likely, though, is that they might act as effective give-aways for people with other ventures they're trying to promote, ie websites, blogs, novels.

Good luck if anyone wants to try it.

That's exactly how I've used mine.

I liked the Dark Lord and he struck me as being very much a pitchfork and mob type of character. If he has returned from the dead (again!!!) then great, that is a good result for this month.

Otherwise I'm struggling a little here and I usually have loads of ideas. There is plenty of time yet, so I'll go and sort pitchforks and lengths of rope to keep myself occupied until my muse returns.

No one can use my exquisite fantatsticery until they start bloody voting for me.

<slams door and leaves like Catherine Earnshaw>

;)
The word "flounce" could have been created just for you! :p (I can see the title of your autobiography now -- Flouncing with Fish! Or, A Fisherman's Flounce? Five Pike and a Slammed Door?!)

I did not know it did that. It didn't used to when I used it before I became a "supporter." As for the tech stuff that's all @Brian G Turner's domain.

@BT Jones .... троян .... BTJ writes a story that by the title I expected to go one way, but it went very much another, proving that fake in our estimation might not be that fake at all.

There once upon a time was a preview option that allowed one to view posts before submitting, and aided in repairing minor typographical errors and perhaps conveyed the notion that indeed the post was not destined for worldly eyes.

Whatever happened to that button?

It's still there, top right hand part of the post window. On mobile it's a page with a magnifying glass icon, on desktop it still says preview. Although, in my opinion of being an old fart internet user from dial up days, this version does do a good WYSIWYG representation as you are typing.

Is that a genuine query, JSW, or a sarky comment?

If the former, it's still there at the top right hand corner of the reply box.

If the latter, .
