Book Hauls!

Well, GOLLUM... looks like you may have competition!:p Welcome to the Chronicles, Addy! I saw your note on the Wells in the other thread, and must admit I was quite thrown... a complete Wells would be one heck of a lot to get through in a month! But, having seen the exact title here, on my comment there... uh, never mind...;)

The more the merrier...:)

Today so far I've bought...

The Devil's Doctor - Paracelsus and the world of Renaissance magic and science - Philip Ball

Secondhand bookshop...
The Open Door - Gene Wolfe

Just out of curiosity Gollum, how many of your purchases are second hand? And how many are purchased from bookstores?

I got these this month:

Foundation (Foundation Series ; Bk 1) - Isaac Asimov
Rendezvous with Rama - Arthur C. Clarke
Survivor : A Novel - Chuck Palahniuk
Dune - Frank Herbert
Stranger in a Strange Land - Robert A. Heinlein

All of the above are awesome books. I'm a little jealous - it'd be great to be able to read them for the first time again.

I just got...

Strange Intentions - Complete short fiction of Tim Powers
A Canticle For Leibowitz - Walter Miller Jr.

Second hand books....

The Dancers Of Arun - Vol 2 Elizabeth A Lynn. I now have the completed trilogy...:)
There Are Doors - Gene Wolfe
The Golden Age Of SF - Edited by Kingsley Amis
The Giant Book Of Myths And Legends - Edited by Mike Ashley
Dreaming Down Under 31 tales from the 'wild side' of Aussie speculative fiction - Edited by Jack Dann & Janeen Webb

And.......The Adventures Of Tintin - Complete Boxed DVD Set

No, no competition here, I'm just a dormant SF & F lover. I used to love it when I was a kid/teen (Perry Rhodan anyone?), but then I spent years read ing mostly 'literary' fiction, and then a handful more year NOT reading much (that time I spent concentrating on music). So now I need to hurry up before it's too late. I'm not getting any younger, and I always get this sense that my time is running out.

Unlike Gollum, though, I must admit that I buy 100% of my books second hand. I can't really afford new books. Shipping to Brazil really adds up, even in larger orders. Maybe I should buy stock in USPS, as I already give them so much of my money every year.

Only read half of them so far. I loved 'Survivor' to bits. Absolutely brilliant. 'Rama' I was not so impressed by, unfortunately. Too uneventful for me. I thought it lacked character and plot. Still enjoyable though. I'm already familiar with the whole Dune and Foundation mythology, but never got around to actually reading neither series, so now I'm finally taking the plunge.

A lot of similarities there. This is (more-or-less) off-topic, but -- save for several years of not reading much (with my personality, I'm not quite sure how well I'd handle that, I must admit) a lot of this sounds very familiar... especially that last bit! And, with exceptions made for special reasons, I tend to buy more second-hand than otherwise, myself. Partly due to the fact so much of my reading is in older material that, even when currently in print, I can find better, sturdier (with less typos) for less... and a lot of it isn't in print any longer.

For my latest "book haul"... I'll have to put it down to finally breaking down and ordering a copy of The Secret of the Sangraal & Other Writings, a book of essays by Arthur Machen. It's much more than I should be spending, but -- dammit! -- I've been after these essays for some years now, so....

For those who are interested in Machen, here's the information on this one:

That looks tasty. I wouldn't dare to bring a book like that in my home. Too precious and delicate. Give me a paperback, and I'll thumb it eagerly. ;)

Intriguing... this is the guy that influenced the likes of Lovecraft, if memory serves. How much was that particular edition, if you don't mind my asking?

Tonight I went to the mass signing at Waterstones in London and bought Jon Courtney Grimwood's Lucifer's Dragon sequal to neoaddix which I had for ages and got them both signed along with End of the Word Blues.:)

I wince to say it, but... $65. I got it for a slightly reduced price, but only a very little. Still, it does have all the contents of several collections of his essays, plus scattered other pieces, and Tartarus Press makes beautiful, sturdy books that will last for a very long time... the only point about the money is that it's rather too tight for comfort right now.... the book itself is well worth it.....

Today I got...

Litany Of The Long Sun (Book I of Book Of The Long Sun) - Gene Wolfe
Epiphany Of The Long Sun (Book II of Book Of The Long Sun) - Gene Wolfe
Forever Shores Aussie Anthology edited by McNamara and Winch
The Wind's 12 Quarters Collected Early Fiction - Ursula Le Guin

Today I found Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell for the bargain basement price of ten dollars, so now I can attack it at my leisure. Which probably means never, but, hey, it looks pretty nifty on my shelf.

Ouch... that's a hefty sum. And I presume it's in US dollars? I'm sorely tempted... but on the other hand, I could buy another 5-6 books for that price. I'll try to find his essays from other sources, and see if I like them enough to buy the Tartarus Press edition.
